Get A Voip Phone

You can make telephone calls over an Internet connection with VoIP.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is an Internet-based telephone service that allows you to call most numbers in the world without using an actual landline. You can use any telephone with your VoIP service, but for the phone to work, you must properly set up your VoIP account and install a VoIP adapter, which turns the Internet connection into a telephone service.

Instructions

1. Plug an Ethernet cable into one of the "Out" ports on the high-speed Internet modem. Insert the opposite end of the cable into the "In" port on the VoIP adapter.

2. Connect one end of the telephone cable into an "Out" port on the VoIP adapter, then attach the free end of the cable into the "In" port on the side of your telephone. You can use a telephone you had originally on your land-line service, or any other phone you desire.

3. Power on the VoIP adapter and open the Internet browser on the computer. Navigate to the VoIP adapter manufacturer's website. This is the company you are going to subscribe to service with.

4. Select to activate your account, then provide any information asked of you, such as your name, address and billing information. Choose a telephone number with your local area code, then submit your payment. Once the company receives your payment, the VoIP telephone and other equipment becomes active, allowing you to make and receive telephone calls with the Internet connection.

What Is A Flash Player

Flash Players play animation, video and interactive content

A Flash Player is any program that can play Flash files. Flash files include animation, video, interactive games, navigation components and even entire websites. Flash files generally have either ".swf" or ".flv" extension. FLV files are for Flash Video, but SWF files can contain many different types of content. When you browse the Web, you will come across Flash files regularly, and may not have been aware that a Flash Player was displaying them.

Files

Flash files can be viewed in a Flash Player program, either individually on a desktop or laptop computer or within the browser while viewing a Web page. Most Flash content is deployed over the Web, so HTML pages contain embedded SWF and FLV files. In some cases Flash content is obvious, for example if it is a video, an animation or an advertisement. However, in many cases you may not even be aware of it, as your browser's Flash Player Plugin will automatically play it.

Official Player

The official Adobe Flash Player is the most commonly used one and is free to download. Adobe Flash Player is available for operating systems including Windows, Mac and Linux, and is installed on almost all computers used by people with Internet access. Flash Player can run individual Flash files as a standalone application or can run as a Plugin within the Web browser for Internet content. Flash Player functions within many browsers, including Internet Explorer, Firefox, Opera, Safari and Chrome.

Versions

New versions of the official Flash Player are released regularly, and each version typically includes additional functionality. Improvements over time have included increased support for advanced audio and video encoding as well as different multimedia formats, improved support for different hardware devices such as tablet PCs and mobile devices, improved text input, streaming and user interaction through multitouch and gesture.

Alternatives

There are alternatives to the official Adobe Flash Player. Among the most widely known options are three open source programs: Gnash, Swfdec and Lightspark. Gnash can run as a standalone or embedded program and is available for many different operating systems. Swfdec can also be run on its own or within the Firefox Web browser. Lightspark is designed as a high performance program, and can run with Firefox and Chrome.

Availability

The availability of Flash playback is restricted in some contexts. Mobile devices such as tablet PCs, handheld computers and smartphones often do not have the ability to run Flash. In particular, many Apple products have dropped support for Flash media content. Since increasing numbers of people are now accessing websites on these types of device, this means that content requiring the use of a Flash Player is inevitably not available to some users. For this reason, many developers are now including alternatives to Flash content using other technologies such as HTML 5.

Lock Your Sim Card

Protect your SIM from unauthorized use by settting a security PIN.

Your SIM card holds valuable account information, and inserting it into a compatible phone means phone calls can be made using your phone number. You can protect your SIM card from unauthorized use by setting a PIN. The PIN is a numeric code, typically four to eight digits. To set a unique PIN, you'll need to know your default PIN code. This can be found in your phone's user guide or by contacting your wireless provider. Default PINs are commonly "1111" or "1234."

Instructions

1. Power on your phone and access "Settings." Choose the security option.

2. Highlight and select the "Change PIN Code" option. You will be prompted to enter in the current PIN--which will be the default PIN as set by the manufacturer. Consult your user guide or carrier if you do not know the PIN.

3. Type in the default PIN, and press "OK." You will then be prompted to enter in a new PIN code. Use your keypad to enter in your desired PIN, and press "OK." Retype the PIN to confirm. You will receive a confirmation that the PIN has been changed.

4. Return to your phone's "Settings" menu. Scroll to "Security," then choose "Lock SIM Card." Some phones might allow you to adjust settings as to when the phone will prompt you for the code, such as upon powering on or when the phone goes into standby mode. Adjust the settings, if applicable, then press "OK" to confirm.

Receive Text Messages From Another Phone

Receive Text Messages From Another Phone

Sending and receiving text messages is one of the primary functions of cellphones these days. The ease of receiving messages makes texting a universally accessible service used by all ages. By using the same towers and even more primitive technology than needed for calls, cellphone companies have created communities of text messaging around the globe. A few simple steps can make receiving text messages a breeze on your new or existing cellphone plan.

Instructions

1. Check that your service provider has activated text message receiving on your phone. Some companies may not activate these services until you call and/or pay a fee. If you are interested only in receiving messages, try to get a plan that doesn't spend a great deal of money on sending messages. Checking that these services are activated can be done by either calling your company or visiting its website.

2. Have someone send you a text message from a different phone. After a message has been composed on another phone, have the person send it to your phone number.

3. Open your Inbox of text messages to check if you have received the message. Usually, cell phones will alert you that you have received a message. Checking your Inbox is a sure way of knowing if such alerts are not set up on your phone.

Can Wifi Interfere With Dropped Cell Phone Calls

Wi-Fi technology does not interfere with cell signals.

Because Wi-Fi and cellular call signals operate on different radio frequencies, it is not possible for Wi-Fi technology to cause a cellphone to experience dropped calls. At the time of publication, there are four Wi-Fi protocols used in mobile phones that give the devices the option of making a wireless Internet connection without accessing the wireless service provider's network.

Frequencies

All cellphones use Global System for Mobile Communication, better known as GSM, or Code Division Multiple Access technology for sending and receiving cellular transmissions, such as calls and messages. Typically, GSM and CDMA phones operate on the 850, 900, 1,800 and 1,900 MHz radio frequencies, though some high-end CDMA phones may also use the 2,100 MHz frequency. At the time of publication, the 802.11a, 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n protocols comprise the Wi-Fi family. Each standard operates using the 2.4 GHz radio frequency, except for the 802.11a protocol, which uses the 5 GHz frequency.

GSM vs. CDMA

Although GSM and CDMA phones operate on the same radio frequencies, they are only compatible with networks that operate using like technology and do not interfere with each other's transmissions. At the time of publication, AT&T and T-Mobile are the only national wireless service providers that operate GSM networks, while Verizon Wireless and Sprint are the only national carriers to operate CDMA networks. GSM phones are not compatible with CDMA networks, and vice versa. Unlike GSM phones, CDMA phones do not require the use of a Subscriber Identity Module card, which stores information that identifies a GSM phone and its user to a carrier for network access. CDMA phone store this information internally and do not support SIM cards.

Bluetooth

Most mobile phones are equipped with Bluetooth technology, which allows users to perform an assortment of wireless tasks, including placing and receiving phone calls and sharing files with similarly-equipped devices. Bluetooth also operates on the 2.4 GHz radio frequency, making it impossible for this technology to interfere with and cause dropped cellphone calls. Although Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technologies use the same radio frequency, they are designed to coexist and not to interfere with each other.

Considerations

GSM and CDMA phones use specific radio frequencies in different parts of the world for sending and receiving cellular transmissions. North, South and Central American cellphones use the 850 and 1,900 frequency bands, while phones in the rest of the world use the 900 and 1,800 frequencies. Wi-Fi technology operates on the same frequencies throughout the world. Most mobile phones support a Wi-Fi calling application, which allows you perform tasks, such as placing and receiving calls, through a Wi-Fi connection instead of a cellular connection to a carrier's wireless network.

What Is Silent Mode In Norton

Silent mode in Norton anti-virus enables you to watch movies without disruption.

Silent mode in Norton Anti-Virus is a type of running mode that temporarily stops background processes and suppresses notifications or security alerts. The anti-virus software will still protect your computer from malware while it is in silent mode, but you won't receive any popups, and the software won't conduct any background scans.

Causes

Norton Anti-Virus software goes into silent mode when you computer is carrying out important tasks that require a high level of processing power. These might include using full screen applications, such as video games or movies. The software will also go into another type of silent mode, called quiet mode, when you are burning disks or recording a video from your computer. This prevents the pop-up notifications interrupting your movie or game and frees up processing power for these tasks.

Activation

You can activate silent mode in one of two ways. If you want to turn on silent mode for a specified amount of time, you can activate it manually through the Norton Anti-Virus software window. The software will automatically switch to silent mode when you activate the full-screen function on a video or game. When Norton activates silent mode automatically, it will automatically turn off silent mode when you leave full-screen mode and any processes that were postponed will resume.

Manual Activation

You can activate silent mode manually by opening the Norton Anti-Virus software window and clicking on "Settings." Select "Administrative Settings;" then find the "Silent Mode" row. Move the switch under "Silent Mode Settings" to the left so it displays as "On." In the silent mode dialogue box, use the drop-down menu to specify how long you want Norton to operate in silent mode. Once this time expires, Norton will automatically turn off silent mode and its normal functions will resume.

Quiet Mode

Quiet mode is the silent mode that Norton activates when your computer is carrying out certain processes. These include burning CDs and recording videos using Windows Media Center. Norton Anti-Virus also contains a "Quiet Mode List." When programs on this list are opened, Norton automatically activates quiet mode and automatically deactivates quiet mode when you close these programs. Quiet mode has the same effect as silent mode as it suppresses popups and stops extra background processes running, while still protecting your computer from security threats.

I Am Unable To Register The Sim Card For My Nokia N95

The Nokia N95 hit the market in 2007.

Registering a Subscriber Identity Module card is necessary when you activate the Nokia N95 on a wireless service provider's network. Understanding a few aspects of SIM card technology helps you troubleshoot when you are unable to register the phone's SIM card. Most of these conditions are easily dealt with, though some require you to exercise a little patience.

SIM Technology

A SIM card stores data that is relevant to both you and your Nokia N95, including the device's phone number and your account information. The phone's wireless service provider requires this information to activate the phone and give the phone access to the network. The SIM card is made of a sensitive microchip that is easily damaged, especially if it has been transferred between devices on multiple occasions. A damaged SIM card can fail to connect to the N95's processor, making it impossible to register the card with the phone's carrier. In this case, replacing the SIM card with one that is undamaged typically resolves the registration problem.

Networking Problems

The Nokia N95 is a Global System for Mobile Communication phone -- commonly referred to as a GSM phone -- that is only compatible with networks that use GSM technology. At the time of publication, AT&T and T-Mobile are the only national carriers that operate GSM networks. Cell towers play an integral role in registering and activating the phone and its SIM card for use on a GSM network. Extreme conditions, such as stormy weather and high volumes of traffic, affect a cell tower's ability to handle cellular transmissions, such as registering a SIM card. Extreme conditions like these are outside your control. Wait until the weather settles and try the process again to see if your SIM card registers.

Compatibility

SIM cards are interchangeable between GSM phones. However, the cards may be outdated and incompatible with newer mobile phones. For instance, if the SIM card in your Nokia N95 was originally contained in a phone that was several years older than the N95, your SIM card and phone may not be compatible with one another. In this case, you will not be able to register the card and use the phone on your provider's network. Obtain a new SIM card is simple to do, which is relatively inexpensive, to eliminate the registration problems.

Carriers

The N95 will not work on Code Division Multiple Access networks, such as the ones offered by Verizon Wireless and Sprint. If you are trying to switch your service from T-Mobile or AT&T to Verizon or Sprint, you need to purchase a CDMA phone from your new carrier.

Flash A Sanyo To A Cricket

If you love your Sanyo phone, keep it when you switch to Cricket.

"Flashing" refers to the process of reprogramming your CDMA network phone to a new wireless carrier. This is different from unlocking a cellphone - unlocking works with GSM networks that require a SIM card, and is basically allowing the phone to recognize the SIM card of a different network. Flashing delves into the programming of your phone that tells it which network's cellular towers to communicate with, and works with networks such as Verizon, Sprint and Cricket.

Instructions

1. Check your phone for a SIM card. Although you may have a microSD or other storage card in your Sanyo phone, CDMA phones compatible with Cricket shouldn't have a SIM card inside. Sanyo makes both CDMA and GSM phones, so it's important to make sure that you have a CDMA phone before attempting to flash it.

2. Download the appropriate flashing software to your computer. Find this software at online retailers such as Your Cellular, CDMA Flashing Software and Remote Squad. Make sure to download a version that is compatible with your Sanyo model and the Cricket network. Costs vary, but be prepared to pay at least $25 for the download.

3. Call Cricket to establish wireless service. Let them know you're using your existing phone, and give them the necessary information about your phone such as model and identification number.

4. Plug the USB cable into your phone and your computer. Open and run the flashing software, following its instructions to complete the flashing process. The instructions for each phone are very different, but essentially, you must first make sure your phone is connected to the proper COM port - typically COM port 1 or 2 - by going to your Device Manager. To do this, click on "Start," then type "Device Manager" in the search box. Look for your Sanyo phone on the COM port list and drag and drop it to the correct port if necessary. The software then replaces your phone's PRL file - or preferred roaming list - with the correct one from Cricket. To access the folder containing the PRL file, the software may ask you to press an unusual series of buttons, such as "####" and "End." It may also ask you to enter your service program code, which should always be "000000."

5. Unplug the USB cable from your phone, then turn off the phone. After it completely shuts down, turn it back on and dial "611" to make sure you connect to your new Cricket network.

Use A Camera Flash

Using a camera flash may come in handy when taking pictures indoors, at night or during a cloudy day. When your camera has reached maximum aperture or you are without faster film, using the flash may be your best option. What follows are some basic tips on using the flash to enhance your photos.

Instructions

1. Know the advantages of using a flash: versatility (quality of light may be adjusted various ways), portability (most flashguns can fit inside your pocket) and adjustability (brightness may be changed according to the distance from subject and lens aperture required).

2. Learn the disadvantages of using a flash: limited range and coverage (most flashes have a range of only a few meters), short duration (this limits the range of shutter speeds and prevents you from spotting problems before they occur) and heavy battery consumption.

3. Choose a flashgun. The main types of flashguns include Hot Shoe Mounted (fits into a slot in your camera), Bounce flash (provides flexibility with adjustable head that allows bouncing light off any surrounding surface), Hammerhead flash (more powerful gun used by professionals), Ringflash (highly specialized gun designed for macro photography) and Slave flash (secondary flashguns used for fill-in lighting).

4. Watch your shutter speed. Your flash will only work adequately at certain shutter speeds. For example, if the shutter speed is set faster than your flash sync speed, you risk having only part of the picture frame exposed.

5. Adjust the aperture. The aperture controls all of the light entering the lens and is dependant on the power of your flashgun. Exposures can be controlled by either keeping the flash output constant and varying the f-stop or by choosing an aperture and adjusting the flash power to suit it.

6. Use the manual mode for multiple pictures at a fixed distance. Manual flash emits a fixed (or constant) output regardless of changes in light levels or subject distances. Therefore, using this mode will offer consistent exposures.

7. Try using the flash on sunny days. A controlled burst of flash may eliminate unwanted shadows on your subject's face. In addition, daytime flash may be used for fill-in light, leading to more natural (and detailed) pictures. Experiment with your camera to see which flash setting works best.

Fsmgmt Msc Virus Removal Tools

If the Fsmgmt.msc Run command is malfunctioning, a virus may be to blame.

Fsmgmt.msc is a Run command to allow quick access to a computer's Shared Folders. If the command is no longer working, a virus may be to blame. This could be a virus affecting Shared Folders, a virus affecting all Run commands, or a virus targeting the Fsmgmt.msc command specifically. Whatever it is, there are several ways to find and remove it.

Fsmgmt.msc

Fsmgmt.msc is a command the user types into the Run dialogue (located in the Start menu) to quickly access Shared Folders. Many users find this quicker than clicking through various hard drives and folders to get there. Any phrase with the ".msc" extension is a Run command.

Virus Symptoms

Because a variety of viruses can impact Fsmgmt.msc, symptoms vary. Typing in the command could pop up an error message, it could shut down the computer, or it could do nothing at all. A useful trick for identifying the scope of the problem is to try another command. For instance, see if the configuration command "msconfig" has the same issue.

Virus Prevention

When it comes to viruses, the best offense is a good defense. Though Windows offers basic security protection, PC users would be well advised to invest in a full antivirus program. Third-party programs are often more powerful and more effective at blocking the sort of viruses that could affect Fsmgmt.msc. Popular choices include AVG, Symantec and McAfee.

Removing with a Microsoft Tool

One option for removal comes with every Windows computer. It's called the Malicious Software Removal Tool. To access it, the user types MRT into the Run dialogue and hits ENTER. If this virus is affecting all Run commands though, this will not work. Instead, the user can download a copy of the program from Microsoft Security (linked in Resources) and run the scan directly from there.

Removing with Third Party Software

Users who already have a third-party antivirus program may wish to use it to remove the virus. Such a program will generally have a "Scan" option. This could take a while, but will eventually list any and all viruses and prompt for removal. The Fsmgmt.msc virus could have any number of names, so there may not be any obvious connection to a particular virus.

Make My Cell Phone A Wireless Router

Using your cell phone as a wireless router is useful when other WiFi networks are not available.

Turning your cell phone into a wireless router is a good way to take advantage of the high-speed Internet connections offered by cellular carriers. By using a host computer to share your cellular connection wirelessly, you can turn any area with a cell signal into a WiFi hotspot. All major cellular carriers offer high-speed data services, so having an unlimited data plan and a phone capable of tethering are the only major requirements. Turning your cell phone into a wireless router requires the use of an ad hoc wireless network, which requires a single computer to be designated the host.

Instructions

1. Connect the cell phone to the computer. In most cases, your cell phone connects to the host computer via a USB cable. It is also possible to establish a data connection via a Bluetooth personal area network, but Bluetooth data transfer speeds are slower, which can slow down your entire network.

2. Launch the Internet sharing application. Open the Internet sharing application on your cell phone. On Windows Mobile phones, the program is located under the Start menu, and on other phones it is listed alongside applications.

3. Begin the connection. In the Internet sharing application, press the Connect soft button on your phone to use it as an Internet connection. Once your cell phone screen indicates it is connected to the computer, launch a web browser or messaging application and verify the network connection.

4. Set up the host computer for Internet sharing. Open the Control Panel, and click on "Network Connections." Next, select your Wireless Network Connection and right click on it. Choose "Properties," the last option in the pop-up window. In the next dialog box, select the Wireless Networks tab and select "Add" under the Preferred networks section. Provide a name (SSID) for the network, and select a type of data encryption to keep your network secure. At the bottom of the window, select "This is a computer-to-computer (ad hoc) network; wireless access points are not used." This will designate the computer as the host for the ad hoc network. Press OK to save all changes, and close the Control Panel.

5. Set up client computers. Client computers are computers that connect to the host to use its Internet connection. On each host computer, open the Control Panel and select "View Available Wireless Networks." Select the network name that you created in step 4. You will be asked to input the network password. This procedure can be followed for each computer you want to connect to the ad hoc wireless network.

6. Verify connectivity. On each client computer, open a web browser and make sure the connection is active.

Use A Bluetooth Headset With A Computer

Use a Bluetooth Headset With a Computer

Bluetooth headsets are generally used within the realm of hands-free cell phone communication, but you can also use Bluetooth headsets to chat wirelessly on your computer. Whether you are playing games, or using Internet-based VoIP services like Skype, using a Bluetooth headset with your computer is a fairly simple process. It will allow you to enjoy chatting online without the hassle of wires.

Instructions

1. Find out whether your computer is Bluetooth-enabled. Do this by going to the control panel section of your computer and looking for a bluetooth icon. If the icon is there, then your computer is Bluetooth-ready. However, if it is not there, you will need to purchase an adapter.

2. Install a Bluetooth adapter if your computer is not Bluetooth enabled. Bluetooth adapters are fairly easy to come by and generally plug in to your computer's USB port. You will need to install some drivers and a management program, which should come bundled with the adapter.

3. Enable the Bluetooth "discovery" mode on your computer. Double click on your computer's Bluetooth utility. This is usually found in the control panel if your computer already has bluetooth, or in the programs folder if you are using an adapter. You will then see an option that says "search for devices" double click on this option to put your computer in "discovery" mode.

4. Activate your Bluetooth headset. On most headsets, this can be done by pressing the blue "power" button twice. However, if you have a high-end model, you may want to consult your owner's manual for more on this.

5. Link your headset to your computer. Once your computer locates the Bluetooth headset, you will see a message pop up asking if you want to set up a link between the computer and the headset. Simply press the "OK" button to confirm the connection.

6. Test your connection. The easiest way to do this is to open an audio recording program (such as the Windows sound recorder) and speak into the headset. If your connection has been successful, you will see it reflected in the audible visualization. However, if it has not been successful, the visualization will remain flat.

Replace An Ipod Nano Cover

Replacing your scratched and scarred cover is like giving a fresh paint job to your iPod Nano. Nano covers come in a variety of colors and designs, allowing you to update your iPod to match your style. You can replace the cover in a few steps. All you'll need is a small flat-head screwdriver and a piece of thin hard plastic such as a guitar pick or small paint scraper to use as a wedge.

Remove the Back Cover

Slip the wedge between the two pieces of the cover and run it along the edges to loosen the casing. You can tape the edges of the iPod Nano cover to reduce the chances of scratching it in case you want to reuse it.

Pry the back cover off with the wedge. You might need to separate the casing with the wedge to prop the casing open and the screwdriver to pry the pieces apart. Perform this step as gently as possible so as not to disturb the inner wiring.

Disconnect the Hard Drive

Remove the battery from the hard drive by gently popping it off the board with the screwdriver or wedge. The battery will be connected to the hard drive by wires, so be careful not to tear them. Place the battery to the side of the hard drive. If you are uncomfortable working around the battery wires, you can disconnect the battery completely by pinching the top of the connector holding the wires to the battery.

Unscrew the hard drive from the front cover. There are four screws, three near the base of the hard drive near the synch port and one in the middle of the board on the left. If the screws are covered by tape, remove it. Removal of the tape will not affect the Nano's performance.

Disconnect the Front Cover

Flip the Nano over and gently lift the cover up from the base. You will see a ribbon connecting the hard drive to the front cover. Slide the black piece next to where the ribbon is connected to the hard drive--this will release the ribbon from the front cover, which you can now remove.

Put the Nano Back Together

Connect the new cover to the Nano's hard drive by connecting the ribbon to the hard drive and sliding the black piece into place. Flip the Nano over and screw the hard drive back onto the front cover.

Reconnect the battery wires if you disconnected them earlier. Replace the battery in its hard-drive bay and press down to snap it into place. Place the new back cover over the hard drive and lock the two pieces together by pressing them firmly together.

Unlock A Sony Ericsson W950i

Released in 2006, mostly to European markets, Sony Ericsson's W950i is a touch-screen cell phone with advanced Walkman music-playing features and stylus-centered handwriting recognition. If you want to move your W950i to a new network, either for a better rate or to avoid roaming charges on the road, you should see if your old carrier will give you an unlock code for free; otherwise, you'll have to pay for one at an online vendor. It's legal.

Instructions

1. Find your W950i's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number on a label under the battery. Some networks also allow you to view your IMEI by typing *#06# into your keypad and pressing "Send." Write the number down.

2. Call the carrier you wish to leave, give a representative your IMEI number and ask for your free unlock code. You will be told that your code will be sent to your email address in about five days--as long as you pay any early termination fees--or your request will be declined. If the latter, navigate to one of many online unlock code websites to buy your code for upwards of $9.99 (as of December 2010). Wait for your code to arrive via email.

3. Turn off your phone, remove the back cover and battery and remove your old network's SIM card.

4. Replace the battery and power the phone on again. Enter the code as instructed by your old carrier or the online vendor. This usually will require you to enter the digits and hit "Send." You should be informed on the display if the unlock code worked.

5. Turn off your phone, remove the battery and slide in your new service provider's SIM card. Replace the battery and back cover, then power on your W950i.

What Kinds Of Memory Cards Do Blackberry 8530s Use

Upgrade your BlackBerry 8530's storage with MIcro SD or Micro SDHC memory cards

BlackBerry 8530, also known as BlackBerry Curve 2, includes features that are common in all smart phones including Wi-Fi and GPS capabilities, Bluetooth, a multimedia player and Flash memory. BlackBerry 8530 phones are supplied with a 256MB Flash memory Micro SD memory card. This memory card holds a relatively small amount of data and can be updated to offer larger storage capacity. Two types of memory cards are compatible with the BlackBerry Curve 2; Micro SD and Micro SDHC. Two companies manufacture these memory cards, SanDisk and Dane-Elec.

SanDisk Micro SD Memory Cards

Micro SD memory cards are small Flash memory cards that are commonly used in mobile phones, GPS devices and personal audio players. Flash memory cards can store information without requiring a power source. They differ from traditional phone memory cards because they can delete and update large volumes of stored information at a time. This is relevant to BlackBerry 8530 phones as they hold large amounts of data such as emails, contacts, music and Internet downloads, which are regularly updated by the user. SanDisk was a pioneer of Micro SD technology and was the original manufacturer of BlackBerry 8530 Micro SD memory cards.

Dane-Elec Micro SD Memory Cards

Dane-Elec Micro SD memory cards have features and capabilities identical to the SanDisk versions. They include the same Flash memory technology and are available with the same storage capacities. Price is the sole difference between the two. Dane-Elec memory cards tend to cost less. This could be attributed to the fact that SanDisk created the technology and are is more recognizable brand in this field, therefore gaining a competitive advantage based on quality rather than price.

SanDisk Micro SDHC Memory Cards

Micro SDHC memory cards are high-capacity Flash memory cards with a minimum memory storage of 4GB. They are commonly used in mobile phones, digital cameras, PDAs and personal audio players. They are designed specifically for devices that are compatible with SDHC 2.0 specifications, such as the BlackBerry 8530 phone. As well as offering larger memory capabilities than Micro SD cards, they also offer quicker data-transfer speeds. SanDisk was the original manufacturer of BlackBerry 8530 Micro SDHC memory cards.

Dane-Elec Micro SDHC Memory Cards

Dane-Elec Micro SDHC memory cards have features and capabilities identical to the San Disk versions. They include the same Flash memory technology and are available with the same high-storage capacities. But again, price makes the sole difference, as Dane-Elec memory cards tend to cost less.

Compare Samsung Televisions

Flat-panel TVs are among the most popular household items.

Headquartered in South Korea, the Samsung Corporation is among the world's leading television manufacturers. The company has phased out many of its "tube-based" televisions for more technologically advanced models. Samsung produces flat-panel TVs in a variety of sizes. These models include plasma, LCD and LED televisions. When you compare Samsung televisions, consider factors such as size, technology, picture quality, price and connectivity.

Instructions

1. Visit a store so you can view different Samsung models in person and compare picture quality. While a 1020 pixel resolution is standard, some models come with higher or lower resolution. You can save money by choosing a 720p unit, for instance, but only if the difference in picture quality is not a factor for you. According to the Samsung website, LCD TVs are known for their sharp, detailed images and smooth picture, while plasma models have the best contrast. LED TVs are back-lit to provide a state-of-the-art picture. Look for these features when comparing each model.

2. Check connectivity options for each unit. Determine the number of HDMI and other inputs for your Blu-Ray player, DVD player, video game systems or cable boxes. If you want to connect to the Internet, choose a model that's Internet ready. Look for USB inputs if you'd like to connect your computer to your television. According to Samsung's website, LED models offer the best overall connectivity, and are the only models compatible with 3-D viewing systems.

3. Determine which types of Samsung televisions are available based on the size of the TV you are looking for. According to Samsung's website, the company produces plasma TVs ranging from 42 to 63 inches, LED TVs from 19 to 55 inches, and LCD models from 19 to 65 inches. Narrow your search to a specific Samsung television technology based on these size ranges.

4. Compare the type of casing for each model and find one that matches your decor. Samsung TVs are available in black, white, aluminum and a variety of other finishes. Choose one that matches your decor.

5. Ask about installation options for each model. Some Samsung televisions are thin and lightweight enough for hanging on the wall, while others must be mounted on a stand. If you want a wall-mounted unit, choose a thinner model that can safely be hung on the wall.

Change Macintosh Desktop Folder And Image Icon Size Using Mac Os X

Change the size of Macintosh desktop folders and image icons!

Mac computers running OS X are highly customizable, but because the computer ships without an instruction manual, some users never learn about the options to adjust the default appearance and actions of the computer. One such option is the ability to change the size of folders and icons and the background colors of specific windows.

Instructions

1. Open a window containing files on your Mac. Depending on how the default is set, you may see image files appear only as a list or as application icons; they could appear small or the file name may be small and hard to read.

2. Locate the action icon at the top of the window you opened. It resembles a wheel. Click on it and select "Show View Options" from the drop-down menu. A palette opens.

3. View the contents of the palette, most of which are self explanatory. In this palette, you can change the size of an icon, change the size of the type under the icon, select to open in icon view or list view and choose to show an icon preview. Additionally, you can designate the changes to be active for the open window or for all windows.

4. Choose the background color for the window displaying the files and folders. White is the default, but you can change to any color or to an image of your choice.

5. Change the size of the folders on the Mac desktop by clicking on "Finder" in the dock and choosing "Desktop" from the navigation bar. Click "View" in the Apple menu and select "Show View Options" from the drop-down menu. Click the radio button under one of the two size icons. Click the desktop on the computer and use the slider that appears to adjust the size of the icons and text.

Design With Fringe

Fringe has multiple uses.

Fringe is a popular decorator accessory that has been in use for centuries. Fringe comes in many forms, made of chenille and other materials, and is even made by stringing beads. Fringe can be found at fabric stores, hobby and craft stores and online. Egyptian fringe, the long, beaded fringe used on many dance costumes, can be ordered directly from Egyptian sellers for under $20 a meter. Fringe can be used on clothing, furniture accessories and costumes.

Instructions

1. Glue along the top band of your fringe before using it. This is especially helpful for beaded fringe as the beading can break and then begin to unravel. With glue along the band, one lost strand will not mean the loss of others. For fabric fringes, such as chainette fringe, this step is unnecessary.

2. Add fringe to lamps and pillow edges. For lamps, glue the fringe band around the base of the lampshade, allowing the fringe to dangle. For pillows, sew the fringe around the pillow edges.

3. Add fringe to clothing. Sew fringe around the hem of a skirt. Add fringe to a jacket. Fringe typically follows the seam of a sleeve, but can also follow the jacket's yoke or bottom edge. Add fringe along the yoke of a western-styled shirt. For something fun, add fringe to the brim of a hat. Anyplace you want a little extra swing added into your outfit, fringe can fill the bill.

4. Create costumes using fringe. Consider a flapper costume. All you need is a basic shift-styled dress. Then add rows of fringe around the dress, adding as many as you like. Cover the entire dress or just have a few rows on the skirt and across the chest. Belly dancer bra and belt sets are typically covered with beaded, Egyptian fringe. Make your own beaded fringe top and belt for wearing with jeans or skirts.

Use Your Mobile As A Tv Remote

Many phones also allow you to schedule TV recordings.

Living rooms can fill up with remote controls for your television, DVD player, cable service and stereo. Consolidate these devices by turning your cell phone into a universal remote control. There are several methods of achieving this depending on what kind of smartphone you own, and some companies offer the universal remote option on their devices, including the iPad, iPod Touch and iPhone.

Instructions

1. Research TV remote options based on your phone type, such as an iPhone, Android or Blackberry. Look at the price of installing a universal remote on your phone. Turning your Blackberry into a universal remote will cost about $100. Also review the price of any additional remote-related programs, if applicable. A program guide is available for free with the Blackberry phone for the first year of use, then is $20 annually.

2. Review the options concerning universal remote applications for your phone, if applicable. The iPhone, for example, offers several universal remote options, including the RedEye mini, which connects to your phone's ear jack and requires only the press of a button to watch a television show or movie. Blackberry phones offer only one universal remote option (as of December 2010), the AV|Shadow, a small box you plug into an outlet near your home theater system.

3. Install the appropriate universal remote software to your phone. Installing the RedEye mini on your iPhone requires using a free application to generate tones once you connect the RedEye to the ear jack. The RedEye then converts these tones to infrared signals. Blackberries require downloading the appropriate application on your phone, which will send a Bluetooth signal to the AV|Shadow plugged-in box. The application also lets you customize buttons as you see fit, such as "Favorite Action Movies."

2. Purchase a subsidy code from an online unlock specialist like Unlock All Cellular, Cell Unlock or GSM Unlock. (See Resources for their website links.) On these websites, select your Motorola handset or network carrier, and enter the IMEI number in the respective fields. Depending on the provided information, the website will calculate the fee, which usually varies between $10 and $25, as of 2010. You have to make the payment online using your credit or debit card. Within two to three business days, the code will be emailed to you by the website.

3. Insert a SIM card into your Motorola phone. This SIM card should be from a network provider currently not supported by the phone. Then, switch the phone on.

4. Wait for the phone to prompt "Enter Special or Subsidy Code."

5. Enter the unlock code you purchased. Once the phone recognizes this code, the phone will be unlocked from the network provider.

Network Protocols Explained

Network protocols help computers communicate.

A network protocol lays out the rules for data communication between computers. These set of rules allow network card manufacturers to create drivers that interface between network cables, hardware devices and the computer's operating system. Several network protocols are available, but the most common is TCP/IP, which is the "language" of the Internet. It's these protocols that send computer communication from the network card, transmit over the cables and find the right computer to deliver the data packets.

Features

Network protocols are "layered." This means the rules laid out to send a data packet are segmented into several different parts. A protocol designer can create rules for each layer, so network card designers can use the protocol in different ways to make the transmission of data more efficient. It also allows network designers to adapt the protocol for a specific purpose such as Internet communications or small network workgroups with only a few clients.

Types

Several network protocols exist, but TCP/IP has taken over as the most popular construct. TCP/IP is the language of the Internet, so companies and individuals incorporate it into the network topology. Other network protocols include IPX, which is a language developed by Novell. Apple has AppleTalk that allows Mac desktops to interact. Tokenring is an older technology used with coaxial cabling. It connected small networks together as well.

Integration

A network protocol is integrated into the topology using drivers created by hardware designers and operating system vendors. For instance, when a user installs Microsoft Windows, the operating system searches for a network card, and installs the TCP/IP protocol if one is found. This tells the operating system that TCP/IP is used to communicate over the network, and it allows Windows to "understand" incoming data packets.

Considerations

A network can use more than one protocol on the same topology. This is called a "heterogeneous" environment. For instance, a large network may have Windows clients that use a Novell server to host email and shared files. The network uses TCP/IP between Windows clients and the Internet, and it has IPX installed to communicate with the Novell servers. The two protocols work simultaneously, and it is seamless to the user who browses the Internet and accesses the Novell servers.

Security

Protocols only determine the path and rules necessary for computer communication. Security is not implemented unless the protocol transmits encrypted data. Firewalls are implemented on the network for that reason to block malicious attempts at gaining access to network resources. Users should install antivirus software to protect from spyware and other malware that steals personal information.

Ports Used For Voip

A computer becomes a communication device when specific ports are used for VoIP.

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, enables computer users to make phone calls via the Internet without using a traditional telephone line. This is made possible by a variety of listening ports and hardware ports on a computer. Two primary types of listening ports are used: Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP). TCP ports are commonly used in VoIP transmissions, while UDP ports are used for administrative purposes such as resolving server conflicts and upgrading products. In additionally, VoIP phones require hardware ports for the use of accessories such as handsets and headsets.

Basic Ports

Port 5060 is used for both TCP and UDP transmissions. It is the gateway for VoIP communications including phone transmissions, streaming media, instant messaging, gaming and online conferencing. Port 5004 UDP is most often used for transmission of data packets within a computer network.

VoIP Provider Ports

Vonage and Skype, two well-known VoIP service providers, use a wide range of ports on a computer in the operation of their products. Ports 10000 through 20000, for example, are commonly used by Vonage for two-way communication through RTP (Real Time Protocol). Similarly, Skype uses ports 25000 through 40000 for this purpose. Other VoIP providers make use of these or other ports based based on their own product designs and requirements.

Special Purpose Ports

VoIP providers use a supplementary list of UDP ports for upgrading their products. The specific ports used vary from one service provider to the next. Check a provider's website for detailed information on the functions of these ports.

Hardware Ports

USB ports are required for the use of VoIP handsets, which often take the place of a conventional telephone. The audio port on a sound card may be used by headsets and external speakers to take advantage of speakerphone features. In addition, network ports are required whenever a modem, router or adapter is used for connecting to the Internet.

Buy An Unlocked Cell

An unlocked cell phone accepts all networks.

An unlocked cell phone can be used with all cell phone networks. Most phones these days are sold locked to a particular network, restricting the user from using it with another network. However, it is possible to purchase an unlocked cell phone.

Considerations

When buying any cell phone, whether it be locked or unlocked, the buyer should always consider the brand, the model and how much he is willing to spend. One other thing to consider is, comparing prices before buying.

Specialist Websites

The Internet has literally thousands of cell phone websites, however not all of them sell unlocked phones. A few specialize in retailing unlocked cell phones, one of the websites to consider is Pure Mobile. This is one of the most popular unlocked cell phone websites on the Internet (see References) It has a huge array of unlocked handsets, from the most basic cell phone to the latest models. Buyers can purchase their chosen handsets using a credit or debit card, and all purchases are made through a secure online server. Another website to consider is Select GSM (see Resources). It offers top-of-the-range unlocked cell phones, and all purchases can be made via its secure server.

Online Auction Sites

Online auction sites such as eBay are good places to look for unlocked cell phones. A few companies also operate through eBay as well as from their own company website. Purchasing through eBay can be cheaper, as these companies normally sell their products at a lower price when selling on eBay or other online auction sites, such as ebid (see Resources). One of the top-rated sellers on eBay offering unlocked cell phones is gsmphone09. It offers a range of unlocked handsets as well as cell phone accessories (see References).

Ideas For Teaching Kids About Maps And Globes

Students study maps to help them interpret the information presented.

Students, beginning in kindergarten and continuing through elementary school, learn use a map and globe. Students need time observing, creating and analyzing maps to appreciate and understand maps as they continue learning about the world during the rest of their school years.

Kindergarten Map Lessons

Kindergarten students will enjoy tracing the adventures on their map of the hero of a story you read.

Kindergarten students need to determine the difference between water and land on a globe. Throw a globe beach ball to students. When they catch the ball, they will announce to the class if their right thumb is on land or water. You might want to tie a ribbon to all of the students' right thumbs prior to this activity.

They also need to be able to understand items on the legend of the map. Read a story to the class. Choose a book where the character takes a trip. It could be "Little Red Riding Hood," "The Gingerbread Man" or any story that involves movement of the character from one place to another. Have the class draw a map of the adventures. They should include a legend outlining some stops along the main character's route.

First and Second Grade Map Lessons

For older students, add more landmarks to your map, such as the Great Lakes, major rivers, Canada and Mexico.

Students in early primary grades need to identify their community, state, country, all of the seven continents and the four oceans. Have the students choose a label, on which you have written the name of a community, state, country, continent or ocean. Add rivers or lakes that are close to your community, until you have one label for each child. Draw a blank map of the world on a blank shower curtain. Have the students come up to the blank map one at a time to attach their labels to the proper spot.

The students should be able to locate these landmarks on a globe after labeling the blank map several times.

Third and Fourth Grade Map and Globe Lessons

In the third and fourth grades, students learn more about the geographical regions in their state. They also should be able to identify places on a map or globe by using a coordinate grid of longitude and latitude. Understanding the location of the prime meridian, the equator, the tropics and the poles is part of the objectives in social studies.

As a class, make a large salt-dough map of your state. Make distinctions by the topography and color of the geographical regions. The students should be able to identify the valley, mountains or deserts located in your state.

Fifth Grade Map and Globe Lessons

Learning the states and their capitals can be fun with games, songs and puzzles.

In fifth grade, students learn the names and locations of the fifty states. They also should know the names of the capitals for every state. Place a big bulletin board on the wall with a blank outline of the country that has the states outlined. Provide a stack of cards with the states on them and a stack of cards with the capitals printed on them. Let the kids place the names on the appropriate state with your supervision. Have state puzzles in your classroom, play online games that ask the students to name the states and capitals. Sing songs naming the states and capitals. Provide the students with blank maps to label for homework.
