Format E71

Formatting your Nokia E71 cell phone is a drastic step. It is typically the last attempt to restore a non-working phone, as it deletes all of your stored information, including media, and restores all settings to the phone's factory state. A damaged firmware update can cause the phone to behave erratically, including locking up while loading an application or suddenly restarting during use. Once formatted, you can transfer your contacts back to the phone via a memory card in order to restore your phone's contact list.

Instructions

1. Press "Menu" on the Nokia phone and press the scroll key on the phone's keypad to highlight "Tools."

2. Press the "Select" key located in the top-right corner above the "Mail" key on the phone's keypad, and scroll down to highlight "Settings."

3. Press "Select" and scroll down to "Factory Settings." Press "Select" to access the phone's factory restore tool.

4. Scroll up to highlight "Yes" and press "Select."

5. Push the release buttons on the side of the phone and lift up the back cover.

6. Insert the memory card face down into the memory card slot on the left side of the phone. Push the memory card into the slot until it clicks into place.

7. Place the back cover onto the phone and press until it clicks into its slot. Your contacts and other types of media are available on your phone once you insert the memory card into the phone.

Use Jabra

Jabra makes several types of wireless Bluetooth headsets, all of which are compatible with any Bluetooth-enabled phone that supports a headset profile. The headsets designed by Jabra range widely in design, but setup and basic use instructions are similar no matter which headset you own. Before you can start using your Jabra, you'll need to set it up for use with your phone by pairing the two devices. Pairing is a one-time set up procedure.

Instructions

Pairing

1. Connect your Jabra headset to the supplied charging source and allow it to charge fully--this takes about two hours. Your headset's indicator light will change from red to off when charging has completed.

2. Disconnect your headset from the charger and leave it powered off.

3. Power your phone on and select "Settings," then "Bluetooth." Choose "On" to turn Bluetooth power on.

4. Press and hold the headset's "Answer/End" or "On/Off" button (depending on model) for approximately five seconds. Release the button when the indicator light begins flashing. The headset is now in pairing mode.

5. Press your phone's "Menu" button and select the Bluetooth options. Choose "Add New" or "Search" to look for the headset. Allow the phone to search--this may take several moments. Make sure your phone and headset are within a few feet of one another.

6. Select the name of the headset from the list of discovered devices. Enter "0000" when your phone prompts you to enter a passkey. Your phone will confirm pairing and connect to your Jabra for use.

Basic Use

7. Position the headset on your ear, looping the ear hook around the back of your ear. Keep the microphone pointing towards your mouth.

8. Answer an incoming call by tapping the "Answer/End" button once. To make a call, use your handset to dial the number and press the phone's "Send" key. Audio will then be routed to your headset.

9. Use the "Volume Adjust" key, located on the side of the headset (for most models) to turn the in call volume up or down. Volume up is marked with a "+," volume down with a "-."

10. Hang up the call by tapping the "Answer/End" button once. Route calls to your handset by pressing the "On/Off" button for two to three seconds to turn the headset off.

11. Ensure your phone's Bluetooth power is set to "On" to reconnect to your headset. Press the "On/Off" button to turn the headset on. Your phone and headset will connect automatically, provided they are in range.

Find Out Your Own Mobile Number

If you forget your new cell phone number, there are several ways to find it.

When you first get a new cell phone number, it can be difficult to remember. But you can find out your number by looking at the settings in your mobile phone or by using a few other quick tricks.

Instructions

1. Go to "Tools," "Settings," "Options" or another similar menu on your cell phone. Look for the "My Number" option. Your number will be displayed onscreen. This method will work only on certain phone models.

2. Check your cell phone bill. The phone number will be listed on the summary page. In some cases, the cell phone number may be the actual account number.

3. Call 611 or the 800 number of your cell phone service. Press the "0" key to go directly to a representative. You will be asked to provide information such as your Social Security number, name and address.

4. Call a friend's cell phone and ask for the number that's displayed on the phone.

5. Call your landline number to display your mobile number if your landline phone has caller ID.

6. Call your landline phone if it has a voice mail system and leave a message for yourself. Retrieve the message and listen to the prompts before the message is played. Most voice mail systems will instruct you to press a sequence of numbers to get "envelope information" about the caller. Your mobile phone number will be read to you by the answering system. If your mobile number is set with privacy options, you may not be able to retrieve your number in this manner.

Record Cell Phone Conversations

Record Cell Phone Conversations

You can't always rely on someone's word in a phone conversation, especially when it concerns a critical situation. So you may want to start recording all of your important cell phone conversations and saving them for future reference. Many modern cell phones allow you to record a call and save the sound file to your phone. If you don't have this feature, there is another reliable option for recording cell phone conversations.

Instructions

If Your Cell Phone Has Recording Features

1. Initiate your call. Most cell phones won't allow you to record until the call is in progress.

2. Press "Options" or "Preferences," and then "Record." You will see a timer begin counting to indicate that the call is being recorded. Some cell phones have a time limit for how long you can record, so try to keep things brief.

3. Inform the other party that the call is being recorded before any pertinent information is discussed. It is illegal in 12 states to record someone else without their knowledge--you must get dual consent. In these states if you are planning to use this telephone conversation for any type of legal proceeding, it may be inadmissible if you didn't get the other party's consent. In the other 38 states, you only need consent from one side (see the Resources section for a list of dual party consent states).

4. End the call. Once the call is ended, the recording will end too. You can also stop the recording before the call is completed by pressing "Options" again and then "Stop."

5. Name the sound file and save it to your phone.

If Your Cell Phone is Not Equipped with Recording Features

6. Purchase a telephone recording device and a tape recorder.

7. Connect the recording device into the tape recorder and then put it in your ear. You can also use the telephone recording device to interface with your computer and save the sound recording to a computer file.

8. Start the call on your cell phone (ear to phone) and press "Record" on the tape recorder. The telephone recording device will tape both sides of your conversation and save it to the tape recorder.

You'll need to enable it, but once you have, you can use the Internet to find your cell phone's location.

Nokia 6300 Hacks

Nokia released the Nokia 6300 cell phone in January 2007, making it available through SunCom, a regional wireless service provider. Although the phone offers an assortment of features, you can get more out of the device by using a few simple hacks. CNET Asia, a tech review website, gave the 6300 a four-out-of-five star rating based on its features and functionality.

Unlocking

Although the Nokia 6300 was intended for use with SunCom, you can use it with any wireless service provider that operates a Global System for Mobile Communications network, better known as a GSM network. Contact SunCom to purchase an unlock code that you must provide to the phone's new carrier. This code lifts the phone's network restriction and gives it access to the new wireless service provider's network. At the time of publication, T-Mobile and AT&T are the only national carriers that operate GSM networks, but an assortment of regional providers also offer GSM services. Although this process is not technically a hack, it does enable you to use the device in a way that it was not originally intended.

Flashing

Depending on the new carrier, you might also need to install new drivers or programs onto the Nokia 6300 to get it work with your new carrier. This process is known as flashing. Contact the new provider to determine if additional drivers are needed to fully convert the phone to its new network. If the phone does need new drivers, the carrier will tell you where you can obtain them. Additional drivers give the phone the ability to recognize and interact with any network components that are required by the phone's new carrier.

Bluetooth

The Nokia 6300 comes with several Bluetooth profiles, or modes, that allow you to perform wireless tasks, such as hands-free calling and sharing files with other computing devices. You can download and install third-party applications, such as the Super Bluetooth Hack software, which give you the ability to control other mobile phones' Bluetooth functions from the 6300. This hack application is useful if you need to monitor or control another phone's Bluetooth usage, such as with a teen child.

Memory

The Nokia 6300 has nearly 8 megabytes of internal memory, which will likely not meet your storage needs, especially if you intend to add applications to the phone. The phone comes with a built-in card slot that supports microSD cards for up to 2 gigabytes of expanded memory. You can manage the available memory on the 6300 by installing a memory space management hack application, such as Free Space, which identifies and automatically deletes duplicate files or files that you do not use.

Remove Write Protection On A Phone Memory Card

Removing the Write Protection can be a chore

A common complaint of cell phone owners who use an additional memory card with their phones is that the card refuses to allow them to copy or delete data from the card because it is write protected. Depending on the type of phone memory card you have--SD, MicroSD or MiniSD--the solution may be easy, slightly more complicated or a simple matter of reformatting the disk. No matter what kind you have, you will be able to remove the write protection from the phone memory card.

Instructions

SD Card

1. Remove the card from your cell phone by pushing the card into the phone and then releasing it. The card will "pop" up from its slot. Pinch the card between two fingers and pull it out of the phone.

2. Hold the card so the card label is facing you.

3. Push the sliding lever on the upper left side of the card up, toward the top of the card. This will unlock the write protection on the card.

Mini and Micro SD Cards

4. Remove the card from your cell phone by pushing the card into the phone and then releasing it. The card will "pop" up from its slot. Pinch the card between two fingers and pull it out of the phone.

5. Insert the card into a card reader (this will allow it to be read as a normal-sized SD card). Make sure that if the card reader has a slide lever on the upper right-hand side, it is in the "unlocked" position. That position will be marked directly on the reader.

6. Insert the reader into your computer.

7. Open the command prompt on your computer. For Windows users, this is an "Open" that will appear when you click on the "Start" button. For MAC users, open the "Finder" window and click on the drive and then select "Get Info."

8. View the permissions for the drive. Windows users will need to type "regedit" after the "Run" prompt. MAC users need only click on the "Ownership and Permissions" choice in the Info window.

9. Reset the permissions for the phone memory card. Windows users need to make sure that the value in the permissions window is set to "0." MAC users will need to click on the appropriate box to select "Read & Write." Save your changes and exit the Info or Regedit programs. Follow your normal steps for your operating system to eject the card reader and then eject the memory card from the reader and reinstall it in your phone.

Use Weather Instruments

Weather affects everyone's life. For some people, such as aviation pilots, boaters and farmers, weather is extremely important. Yet we have no control over this phenomenon of nature. We can, however use weather instruments to help predict what weather conditions can be expected in upcoming hours or days. This can help people make plans and even prevent serious injuries and death in the event of dangerous approaching storms.

Instructions

Basic Weather Instruments

1. Thermometers: Read the temperature on a thermometer by looking at the top of the liquid in the tube and matching it to the marks on the scale that runs alongside the tube. The fluid in the thermometer (alcohol, mercury, etc.) rises higher in the tube (due to expansion) as heat increases. Common scales used for weather reporting are Fahrenheit and Celsius.

2. Barometers: Write down the air pressure value pointed to by the needle on a barometer, such as 29.5 millibars. Hours later, again observe where the needle is pointing, and record this number. Note whether this number is higher or lower than the previous reading. Meteorologists use barometers to detect trends in air pressure. A rising value indicates fair or clearing weather, while a falling trend can signify stormy weather approaching.

3. Anemometer - Measure wind speed with an anemometer. Whether it's a hand-held unit or one mounted on a rooftop, wind pushes against cups, turning a dial or triggering an electronic counter, which tabulates the number of rotations per given interval. Wind speed can be used by weathermen to predict how long it will take for an approaching storm to arrive.

4. Wind Vanes - Observe which direction the wind is blowing by using a wind vane. Note the direction in which the wind vane's arrow points. When meteorologists report wind direction, they are referring to the direction from which the wind is coming. A northeast wind, therefore, means the wind is coming from the northeast.

5. Sling Psychrometer - Wet the cloth of one of the two thermometers mounted on a sling psychrometer, and swing it around in the air several times. Evaporation is a cooling process. So, as water evaporates from the thermometer's wet bulb, the temperature will go lower. A sling psychrometer measures relative humidity. The drier the air, the more rapidly the cloth will dry, and the lower the temperature.

6. Rain Gauge - Measure rainfall with a rain gauge. Record the amount of rainfall (in inches) indicated. Empty the rain gauge after a storm and you have noted the amount of rainfall on the gauge's scale. During long periods of rain, several days for example, you may want to take a reading every 24 hous and then empty the gauge by dumping out the water. When the storm passes, add together the rainfall from each day to find the total amount for the storm. Another type of precipitation is snow, which is simply measured using a ruler or yard stick stuck in snow to read its depth. For an accurate reading, measure snow height in an open area, free of snow drifts or accumulating snow.

7. Combining the readings (and trends) from various basic instruments can help meteorologists forecast the weather. For example, if the wind direction moves from east to northeast, the barometer is 30.10 or above and falling rapidly, precipitation can be expected within the next 12 to 24 hours. If the temperature is warm, the precipitation will be rain. If it's cold, snow may be the result.

Transfer Large Files Over The Internet

Transfer Large Files Over the Internet

It's happening more and more. We suddenly send a file with an attachment and it sits clogging our outbox going nowhere fast. It's usually not a problem with text documents, but as cameras run a mega pixel race it's increasingly more common to have even a few photos exceed your email service provider's limit. How can we best transfer large files over the Internet?

Instructions

1. One of the simplest ways is to upload files to your current website. The process works well with image and MS Office files. I use the site management function in Dreamweaver. Once the file is posted, send the link with your site's URL followed by a slash, the file name and extension. Your recipient needs to have the appropriate software on his computer to open your file. To save it, right click in Windows and choose Save As. Here's an example of a JPG from one of my sites http://www.checkmatepictures.com/clinton.jpg Unfortunately, this method doesn't work well with video files or MP3 files since these files trigger an automatic response from a player.

2. Another easy process is to use File Transfer Protocol, FTP. The procedure is simple. You log on to a site with a user name and password, then upload a file or two. Send an email to your desired recipient with the site link. The recipient logs on then transfers the files to her own computer. In Windows this can be as simple as opening the file on the site, then opening the destination on the computer and dragging and dropping back and forth. There are public FTP sites available, but they permit access to anybody who logs on. If you'd like to protect the privacy of your files and have frequent need for this service an inexpensive solution is to establish a site through GoDaddy.com. It takes $9.99 to register, and $3.99 a month to hose. If you take your current site name and add ftp to the end such as changing www.CheckmatePictures.com to www.CheckmatePicturesFTP.com the chances are overwhelming that you'll establish a unique URL. Within the site you can then establish folders for each of your clients. True, there will be only one log on and password, but you can protect your clients' privacy by only placing the uploads there for a limited amount of time.

3. One method I use regularly is through SendThisFile.com. Membership is required, but the basic package is free. Paid members have quicker up and downloads. You upload your file to a server. An email is sent to your recipient. If she is a member, she logs on, then download the file. Although I've posted and received a lot of video through this site, I've yet to bump into a limit although nothing I've transferred is longer than a compressed half hour.

4. Another process to use is a peer to peer file sharing protocol like BitTorrent which is a far more complex way of transferring files. If a large file is distributed through BitTorrent it is usually stored in pieces on multiple computers that are hooked up via the Internet. Since the original file is stored in several locations, this reduces the cost in hardware and bandwidth. It also provides redundancy. People who want to obtain the file, must first get the metadata that controls the download. That then connects to recipient's computer to what is termed the tracker which will determine the order of the specific pieces of the file. BitTorrent software is free and the site boasts that it has thousands of free videos movies and games to download.

Determine The Need For A Smartphone

Determine The Need for a Smartphone

Do you really need a smartphone? What is a smartphone anyway? There is no official meaning to the term smartphone but generally speaking, it is a phone that can run like a computer. Aside from the basic function of making calls, text messaging and taking pictures, smartphones run a gamut of applications that can make your head spin. From accessing your email accounts to browsing and downloading information from the web and anything in between, the latest smartphones can do anything - Apple's iPhone alone has thousands of applications for you to use. Smartphones are the future of the wireless industry but for now, you have to ask the question - do you really need a smartphone?

Instructions

1. Budget for smartphones can be high. Most cost upwards of $200. Some cellphone providers will have offers and discounts if you sign a 2 year contract with them thereby bringing the cost of the smartphone down. If you can't afford the hefty price for a smartphone or the subscription that goes with it then it might be wise to choose less costly options.

2. Choosing a data service plan is another factor in determining if you need a smartphone. Although there are a number of mobile phone providers around, they all offer data service plans that cost more than your ordinary cell phone plan because of web access and email retrievals.

3. You need a smartphone if you constantly need access to the internet when you're out and on the go. Laptops can be cumbersome and heavy to lug around when you need to surf the net.

4. If you need to access your email every minute then this might also play a part in your decision. Smartphones enable you to access your emails wherever you are.

5. Office applications such as reading pdf files and the ability to send and receive fax are are one of the features that differentiates smartphones from ordinary "dumb" phones. If you constantly use them then this is another reason for you to need a smartphone.

6. Entertainment features included in smartphones can be a lot of fun. Watching videos, listening to music or radio, playing games and taking pictures can be strong selling points in your need for a smartphone.

7. Applications are the main draws for smartphones. These are software that makes life a little easier. They are a testament to the computing power of smartphones. Features such as calendars, weather and traffic information, facebook, recipes, and various other applications you never knew you need are available at your fingertips.

Definition Of Wifi Cell Phones

Some cell phones are capable of connecting to multiple types of networks. Wi-Fi cell phones are those that can connect to two different kinds of voice data networks to make and receive calls. Such phones improve phone reception and reduce dropped calls.

History

Wi-Fi cell phone technology is derived from VoIP (voice over internet protocol) technology, such as Skype, that allows users to make free calls over their internet connection. Many cell phones have Wi-Fi capabilities allowing them to connect to the internet to browse websites and download applications.

Features

The primary feature of Wi-Fi cell phones that differentiates them from standard cell phones is their ability to make and receive phone calls on both standard cellular networks as well as wireless LAN (local area networks). These phones take advantage of VoIP technology, allowing them to connect over a traditional computer network.

Significance

Wi-Fi phones can continue to receive and transmit voice data even when a cellular network is unavailable. As long as an open wireless network is available, the phone switches to VoIP seamlessly. For example, this feature allows a user to continue a phone call when walking from an outside area into a building that may not have cellular reception.

Geography

In urban areas there can be considerable radio frequency interference from thousands of mobile devices as well as from steel and metal structures. This can result in dropped calls as cellular network signals become blocked or distorted. Wi-Fi phones take advantage of the widely available Wi-Fi internet networks in urban areas to compensate for the impact of radio signals and interference in these dense areas.

Misconceptions

A Wi-Fi cell phone is defined as being a cellular handset that can automatically switch between cellular networks and wireless networks even in the middle of a phone call.

While many handsets do have wireless built into them, many are unable to make voice calls over this connection. Therefore, handsets with Wi-Fi built in for web browsing are not considered Wi-Fi cell phones unless they can make calls over the connection.

Creative Science Activities

Children can understand science more easily by using fun activities.

Young children can sometimes become disinterested in learning if they do not have an activity or craft to show them what they are learning. If you are teaching young students about science, you can provide them with hands-on activities that will teach them about such topics as weather, plants and states of matter.

Homemade Tornado

Making a homemade tornado is a great way to teach students about how a cyclone forms. To make a homemade tornado, empty two 2-liter soda bottles, and fill one half way with water, according to an article on the Yes Mag website. Add in a few drops of food coloring if you want the tornado to have color. Place the opening of the second bottle onto the opening of the first, and tape them together well with electrical tape. When you turn the bottles upside down, the water will empty into the second bottle and will generate a water tornado.

Phototropism in a Box

Plants naturally grow in the direction of the sun, according to an article on the Home Training Tools website. You can easily demonstrate this by creating an experiment that forces a plant to find its way out of a box. Place a plant inside a shoebox, making sure to place it to one side. Place the shoebox lid on tightly. Tape the lid to the box. Poke a hole in the box on the opposite side of the plant. After a few weeks, open the box to see how the plant has grown in the direction of the light.

Layering Liquids

Different liquids can have different consistencies and densities, according to an article on the Sci Fun website. You can demonstrate this by layering liquids in a clear glass. Place five to six liquids, such as oil, water, milk, juice and vinegar into the glass. Stir the mixture well in the glass, and then leave it alone for 2 to 3 hours. The different liquids will create different levels in the glass, depending on their densities.

What Are Some Benefits Of Bluetooth

Some Bluetooth devices come in the form of small earpieces.

Bluetooth is a hands-free, wireless technology that allows a user to connect a Bluetooth headset to a cell phone, laptop computer or other portable Bluetooth-ready device, allowing those devices to communicate directly and securely within closed networks. The benefits of Bluetooth are numerous and span multiple performance categories, including convenience, compatibility and efficiency.

Multitasking

With Bluetooth, a user can access data on a cell phone or other device without having to use his or her hands. This is an especially important function for drivers, who would otherwise have to remove their hands from a steering wheel -- and likely take their eyes off of the road -- in order to answer and carry on phone calls. In an office setting, Bluetooth allows a worker to keep his or her hands free for operating a computer, taking down notes or completing other tasks while talking with customers or fellow employees.

Automatic Connections

Unlike a standard wireless device, which requires a user set up a connection manually with the help of a menu screen or button, Bluetooth establishes a wireless connection automatically. Once a user brings a Bluetooth headset within 30 feet of a Bluetooth-ready device, the two components will sync up, joining the same Personal Area Network (PAN). Also known as a piconet, a PAN is a closed network that allows devices to communicate discreetly while in close proximity to one another.

Standardized Wireless

The wireless technology that Bluetooth depends on is standardized across the telecommunications industry. Assuming all of a device's components are functioning properly, this means a Bluetooth device will always be compatible with another Bluetooth-ready device, regardless of the make or model. For Bluetooth users traveling to other countries, there is no need to worry about adapter cords, cables or other components.

Adaptive Frequency Hopping

Adaptive frequency hopping (AFH) is a technology that limits the interference a Bluetooth headset experiences when communicating with another Bluetooth-enabled device. AFH functions in Bluetooth by scanning through over 70 different frequencies, at intervals of 1 megahertz (MHz). When AFH detects a particular frequency is busy with the signals of other devices in the area, it prompts a hop or switch to a clearer frequency.

Low Power Signals

Apart from using AFH, Bluetooth also minimizes interference by relying on low power signals. While these low-power Bluetooth signals do not travel as far as other wireless signals, they are also less susceptible to interruption. In addition, because Bluetooth can generate these signals using little electrical power, Bluetooth devices suck less power from batteries in comparison to mobile phones and other wireless devices. This makes Bluetooth an energy-efficient mobile technology.

Repair A Motorola Phone

You may be able to fix your own phone.

As with any electronic device, your Motorola cell phone can occasionally have problems. You can often fix the problems without dismantling the phone or sending it off to be repaired. The following troubleshooting instructions are taken from the Motorola V170 manual.

Instructions Other Settings > Initial Setup > Power On/Off. If the phone is displaying the wrong time, set the clock yourself by accessing "Time and Date," also under the "Initial Setup" menu. If you are not seeing a backlight during phone operation, access "Backlight" under the "Initial Setup" menu. For more troubleshooting points, consult your Motorola phone manual or check Resources below.

2. Determine if you can repair the problem or if you need Motorola's help. If you're comfortable taking apart your phone, instructions can be found in Resources. If you don't have the necessary implements (such as aerial removal and lens remover tools) or significant technical knowledge, it's better to have the manufacturer handle the repair.

3. Make sure your phone's software is up-to-date. Your manufacturer's website will indicate if upgrades are available.

4. Determine if Motorola will repair your phone. Most Motorola phones come with a one-year warranty with proof-of-purchase. Milliamp-hours (mAh) refers to the total amount of energy a battery is capable of storing at one time. The term "lithium-ion" refers to the chemical composition of the battery.

Battery Life

The BL-5C will power the Nokia 6030 mobile phone with a maximum of 3.0 hours of telephone talk time, or up to 300 hours -- 12.5 days -- of power when not using the phone to make or receive calls. Actual talk and standby times will vary depending on personal use and charging practices, network configuration, temperature and signal strength.

Dimensions

The Nokia 6030 BL-5C battery has a flat rectangular shape and weighs 2 oz. It is 53.05 mm tall, 33.84 mm wide and 5.62 mm deep.

Compatibility

The Nokia 6300 battery may also serve as a replacement part for the Nokia BL-5CA, BL-5CB and BR-5C batteries. The same battery will also power Nokia models 1100, 1112, 1208, 2330, 2730, 3100, 3660, 5130, 6086, 6230, 6555, 6600, 6670, 6820, 6822, 7610, C1-01, C2-01, N70, N71, N72 and X2-01.

Advisory

In August 2007, 46 million Nokia 6300 BL-5C batteries were the subject of a product advisory recall. The batteries recalled were manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. The issue cited was potential overheating caused by a short circuit during the charging process. Nokia 6300 owners are encouraged to visit batteryreplacement.nokia.com and enter the battery serial number to determine if they have one of the affected batteries.

Delete Text Messages From A Phone

Deleting text messages occasionally helps a wireless phone perform at its best.

Deleting text messages from a wireless phone can be done in several ways, such as deleting one text, a whole conversation or every message on the phone. The process to delete text messages has guidelines that pertain to most phone models. Deleting messages occasionally is a good maintenance task for any phone, as it frees up space for the phone to receive more texts or other data and often enables the phone to access data faster.

Instructions

Delete a Single Message

1. Click on the "Message" icon or the word "Message" or "Messaging" on the phone's home screen. If you don't see it, click "Menu" and then "Messaging."

2. Click the word "Inbox" or "Messages," if necessary, to see the list of all text messages. Scroll down to the message you want to delete and click "Options" or "Edit."

3. Select "Erase" or "Delete" and click it. Sometimes the phone will ask you to confirm ("Are you sure you want to delete this message?"). Select and click "Yes."

Delete All Messages

4. Open the messages screen, click "Options" and then "Manage Inbox" or "Manage Messages."

5. Click "Options" again and select "Mark All." This selection marks every text message in the phone. (This does not apply to all phones, as some do not allow you to delete multiple messages at one time.)

6. Click "Options" again, then select "Erase" or "Delete." Your phone may ask you to confirm the process: "Erase all messages?" Select and click "Yes."

Delete a Message from a Conversation

7. Delete one text message in a series by scrolling to that conversation and pressing the "OK" button on the phone's keypad. (This does not apply to all phones, as not all phones save text messages to and from the same set of people as a conversation, or allow you to delete one message from the conversation.)

Unlock An At&T Phone

If you bought your phone through AT&T, you will probably need an unlocking code to use the service and SIM card of another provider such as Sprint or Verizon. An unlocked phone also lets you use cheaper providers when traveling in other countries, assuming your phone is equipped for international use.

Instructions

Unlocking an AT&T Phone

1. Open your phone and get the IMEI number. This number is usually under the battery, printed directly on the phone. You might also be able to get it by pressing *#06# on your phone keypad.

2. Call AT&T. If you have been a customer in good standing for 90 days or more, AT&T may be willing to provide unlocking instructions and the unlocking code for your phone. This is the cheapest and easiest way to unlock your AT&T phone.

3. If you cannot get the unlocking code from AT&T, take your phone to a cell phone retailer with unlocking software. Call several multi-brand retailers and ask about unlocking. If they do not do it, they will usually refer you to someone who can.

4. Unlock your phone on the Web. Many sites will provide an unlocking code for a fee. Visit such a site, input the IMEI number, pay by PayPal, debit or credit card and wait for the code. (It can take up to 48 hours to receive.) Once you receive the code and follow the instructions, unlocking is instantaneous.

5. Find a free unlocking code on-line. Searching various forums may provide a viable unlocking code for your device. See the resources section for a link to a free unlocking code bulletin board.

6. Download unlocking software. You may be able to unlock your phone (depending on the model) with a cable and free unlocking software. Be sure to check out the software download page and documentation to see if your phone model is supported.

Sync Your Phone Contacts

cell phone and computer

Your cell phone address book doesn't have to disappear if something happens to your mobile device. Learning sync your cell phone address book contacts to an external device such a computer can protect your information and save time and energy.

Instructions

1. Identify output and input ports for all devices involved. Most computers feature USB ports, but cell phone inputs and outputs vary.

2. Find the appropriate connector for your phone. You will likely need a mini-USB to USB connector to transfer data from your phone to your computer.

3. Find sync software that best suits your needs and device specifications. If your mobile device did not come with a sync program, there are free sync applications such as ZYB and Google Mobile. If you are interested in more comprehensive sync applications with various degrees of service, try paid sync clients such as Plaxo.

4. Install the sync software. Before you are able to sync, you must either install your sync application from disc or download it from a provider website.

5. Launch your sync software. Unless instructed otherwise, run your desired sync program before connecting your cell phone or mobile device to the computer. This may not be necessary every time you sync, but it is usually best to allow your sync application to recognize the mobile device from a fresh connection.

6. Follow all device setup instructions. If applicable, you may need to register your device with the sync program. This is to avoid any confusion with multiple devices.

7. Connect your phone to your computer. Once the sync program is running, connect your mobile device to the computer through the appropriate port. If your sync application does not immediately recognize your device, check the menu bar for a device search option. Once the sync application recognizes your mobile device, the sync process should begin. If not, check the menu bar for a sync option.

Repair Error Code 5 On An Xbox

The Xbox game console has a built-in hard drive that can quickly become filled. However, replacing the hard drive with a larger model will cause an "Error code 5" to appear on the Xbox's screen, as the replacement drive is not "locked" into the game console's operating system as the original drive was. Fortunately, you can repair the replacement hard drive so it doesn't cause an Error code 5 by modifying (or "modding") the Xbox with a computer chip from a game console modding supply house. While this will void the Microsoft warranty, the addition of the modding computer chip will eliminate the Error code 5.

Instructions

Modifying the Xbox

1. Put a bath towel down on a table. Remove all of the cables from the Xbox. Put the Xbox face down on the bath towel.

2. Lift off the rubber feet on the bottom of the Xbox with the tip of the utility knife. Scratch off the stickers on the bottom of the Xbox with the tip of the utility knife.

3. Remove the screws from beneath the rubber feet with the Torx screwdriver. Remove the screws from beneath the stickers with the Torx screwdriver. Turn the Xbox face up on the bath towel.

4. Lift up on the sides of the Xbox with your hands to remove the outer shell. Place the outer shell aside.

5. Remove the screws from around the DVD drive with the Philips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift up on the DVD drive with your hands. Pull the two plugs from out of the back of the DVD drive with your hands. Place the DVD drive aside.

6. Remove the screws from around the hard drive with the Philips jeweler's screwdriver. Lift up on the hard drive with your hands. Pull the two plugs from out of the back of the hard drive with your hands. Place the hard drive aside.

7. Release the clips on each side of the metal grill heat sink that is to the right of where the metal bracket was using the tip of the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

8. Pull the metal grill heat sink off with your fingers.

9. Using compressed air, blow off the computer chips now revealed by removing the metal grill heat sink.

10. Position the pin header frame of the computer chip onto the top of the CPU chip so that the pins of the pin header frame line up with the pins of the CPU chip--the CPU chip is the smaller of the two chips that are now revealed.

11. Heat up the soldering iron. Solder the pins of the pin header frame to the computer chip. Let the solder cool for four or five minutes.

12. Plug the modding computer chip into the pin header frame using your fingers. Push down on the modding computer chip to ensure a tight fit.

13. Solder the end of the wire attached to the modding computer chip into the small hole to the right of the CPU chip on the Xbox motherboard--the small hole has "dO" labeled next to it. Let the solder cool for a minute.

14. Blow off the CPU chip with compressed air. Put the metal grill heat sink back over the computer chips. Re-engage the clips on each side of the metal grill heat sink using the tip of the Phillips jeweler's screwdriver.

15. Plug the two cables from the Xbox motherboard back into the back of the hard drive. Put the hard drive back into position on the Xbox. Reattach the screws.

16. Plug the two cables from the Xbox motherboard back into the back of the DVD drive. Put the DVD drive back into position on the Xbox. Reattach the screws.

17.Reverse the disassembly process to put the Xbox back together. Reattach the cables to the Xbox.

Eliminating the Xbox Error Code 5

18. Turn on the Xbox. Eject the disc tray of the DVD drive. Put the modding Xbox disc that came with the modding computer chip onto the disc tray. Close the disc tray.

19. Wait for the modding menu to appear on the screen. Select the "Lock hdd" option from the list of choices presented.

20. Press the "X" button on the game controller. Wait for the confirmation window to appear on the screen to state that the replacement hard drive has been "locked."

21. Select the "Modded" option from the list of choices presented. Press the "X" button on the game controller.

22. Eject the disc tray when the confirmation window appears on the screen. Remove the disc from the disc tray. Close the disc tray. Turn off the Xbox.

23. Turn on the Xbox to use the replacement hard drive without an Error code 5 appearing.

Track Cell Phone Calls With A Sim Card Number

North America has been slower to adopt SIM card technology than the rest of the world.

Tracking cell phone calls with a SIM card requires the use of a SIM card reader. A SIM card stores all the information associated with a user's account. A card reader is required to access all the information on the SIM card, including contacts and call history. There are two types of card readers, readers and spoofers. The spoofers can clone the SIM card, which basically means the machine acts like a clone of the SIM card.

Instructions

1. Remove the SIM card from the phone. This can usually be done by taking out the battery first and then the SIM.

2. Purchase a SIM card reader. A reader will only extract information up to the point of removal from the phone and nothing more, while a spoofer will continue to update the clone profile of the SIM card after the SIM is inserted back into the phone. Essentially the spoofer will record every call placed and received (not the conversation but the numbers) and text message (full message.) Spoofers are in a gray area of the law and the use of them is prohibited in certain states. Both of these devices are not available for purchase at local electronics stores and must be purchased online from specialty shops. Ebay, Amazon.com, spy shops and cell phone equipment wholesalers may carry these units. Expect to pay between $20 (for a basic reader) and up to $1,000 (for an advanced spoofer.)

3. Insert the SIM card into the SIM card reader. Download all the information from the card reader to the computer using native software that came with the SIM card reader. The software is fairly self-explanatory; in most cases and these devices come with an instruction manual. SIM card readers almost always connect to the computer via USB. View the downloaded call history using the SIM card reader's software.

4. Spoof the SIM card using a SIM card spoofer. The same installation process will apply as using a normal reader. The extra step of spoofing the card will require additional work in the program. This is usually done via an on screen install wizard. The spoofer's log file will be updated with new information every time the SIM card is used.

Test A Voip Call

Testing a VoIP call may require an assistant.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) uses the Internet to route telephone calls. You can make and receive telephone calls using VoIP. One thing to keep in mind is that VoIP signals are digital. The signal is converted to analog before it reaches an older touch-tone telephone. The digital VoIP signal is also compressed to save bandwidth. Due to the compression and the digital to analog conversion, VoIP calls may fail. Quality on VoIP calls can be unsatisfactory. There are a few standard ways to test VoIP calls.

Instructions

Test an Outbound VoIP Call

1. Call the phone of a friend or family member. This will test if you can dial out, and you can ask how you sound.

2. Place a phone call to any Interactive Voice Response (IVR) system. Google's search number 1-800-GOOG-411 is an excellent test. Google's IVR uses voice recognition to route your call. If the IVR cannot understand when you speak clearly, there may be an audio problem. Any IVR using voice recognition could be substituted in this test.

3. Call yourself on voicemail. You can call your own voicemail, leave a message and call back from another number to check both the connection and the quality.

Test an Inbound VoIP Call

4. Ask a friend or family member to call you from another telephone. An assistant can tell you if the call connects and how the audio quality sounds.

5. Call an echo number. Speak and listen to yourself echo back. This is helpful to diagnose audio quality issues. One number known to work as a VoIP echo test is 909-390-0003. Nobody says hello, but if you wait a few seconds, you can talk and listen to yourself echo back.

6. Call yourself from another phone. This test can tell you whether your VoIP phone accepts incoming calls. It is a bit more difficult to test the audio quality, due to potential feedback.
