Change Skateboard Bearings

Skateboard bearings basically connect the wheels to the axle of the trucks, determining how your wheels actually roll. Whether you break a bearing or just want to change to a faster or more durable set, there will come a time when you need to change your bearings.

Instructions

Remove Old Bearings

1. Gather the proper tools. A skate key will work, but you can substitute a basic screwdriver and wrench.

2. Remove the wheels with your skate key. If you have shields installed, you must remove those as well. Keep your spacers, if you are using them, to use with the new bearings.

3. Apply pressure with the skate axle to pop the bearings off. You can also use a screwdriver or a skate key that includes a removal nub, but the easiest way is to slowly pry the bearing out with the axle. Make sure only the tip of the axle is inside the bearing and it is not touching the wheel.

4. Pry the bearing out carefully if you want to save the part. If you are throwing your bearings out, then you can apply more pressure, which may cause damage. Just be careful not to hurt the wheels.

5. Repeat prying each bearing out with the axle until all eight bearings have been removed.

Install New Bearings

6. Set the bearings into the wheel. Some bearings have a colored shield on one side, which can be placed facing outward, but is not required. The fit should be tight, but start by simply placing the bearings in the wheel without applying too much pressure.

7. Press evenly on the outside metal rim of the bearing until it pushes into the wheel. It should end up flush with the wheel. Avoid pushing on the shield or center of the bearing while you change the parts.

8. Add a spacer between the bearings if you are using them. A spacer keeps the bearings at the proper distance.

9. Set all eight bearings into place one at a time until your skateboard wheels are complete. Then attach the wheels to the board.

10. Tighten the nut that holds the wheels on until it stops. You want to push the bearings into the wheel completely, but do not want to force the nut, which may break the bearings.

11. Loosen the nuts just a little so the wheel has room to roll freely. From the tightest point, you should loosen the nuts about one-quarter to one-half of a turn.

Pair Jawbone 2 With More Than One Phone

The Jawbone 2 is a Bluetooth headset designed to allow hands-free use of a Bluetooth-compatible mobile phone. The headset is not limited to use with only one phone. If you have more than one mobile phone, or if you have family or friends who need to use your headset, you can connect an additional phone to the Jawbone 2. The pairing procedure for additional phones is different from the pairing procedure for the first phone.

Instructions

Pairing the Jawbone 2 with the First Phone

1. Enable the Bluetooth feature on your mobile phone. Each phone has a different method for turning on Bluetooth, so refer to your phone's user guide for instructions.

2. Press and hold the "Talk" button to turn on the headset. The "Talk" button is located in the middle of the headset. The Jawbone 2 will automatically enter pairing mode the first time you pair your headset.

3. Search for available Bluetooth devices on your phone. Check the phone's user guide for information on searching for Bluetooth devices. A list of devices will appear on the screen when the search is complete.

4. Select "Jawbone" from the list and enter the passkey "0000" when prompted. The phone and the headset are now paired and ready for use.

5. Turn on the Bluetooth feature on your mobile phone and power on the headset. The headset will not automatically enter pairing mode since you have already paired it with a phone.

6. Press and hold the "Talk" and "Noise Assassin" buttons at the same time to enter pairing mode. The "Noise Assassin" button is located on the end of the headset. You are in pairing mode when the indicator light blinks red and white.

7. Enable a search for Bluetooth devices on your phone.

8. Select "Jawbone" from the list after the search is complete and enter the passkey "0000." The headset is now ready for use with your phone.

9. Repeat Steps 1 to 4 to pair the headset with each additional phone.

Instructions

1. Place the SIM card and battery into the battery chamber by first opening the back of the phone. Hold the phone backside up. Slide the battery chamber door down with your thumbs, and then lift it off. Slip the SIM card into the SIM card chamber underneath the little metal bar, notch facing downward and receptors facing inward. Place the battery on top of the SIM card with the receptors facing down towards the phone. Place the battery chamber cover onto the back of phone by sliding it upwards while pressing in slightly until it clicks into place.

2. Charge the battery by plugging the small end of the AC adapter into the charging port (located on the bottom left side of the phone). Plug the other end into an electrical wall outlet. If you're using the phone for the first time, then you must fully charge the battery. The display will indicate "Charge Complete" when the phone is fully charged.

3. Turn your phone on by holding the "End Call" button (located on the bottom right side of the control panel above the number keys) for five seconds.

4. Place a call by typing in a phone number (area code first) using the number pad. Press the "Call" button (the green button located to the bottom left side of the control panel opposite the "End Call" button). Answer a call the same way, by pushing the "Call" button when the phone rings or vibrates. End a call by pressing the "End Call" button.

5. Send a text message by highlighting "Messages" in the main Menu using the soft keys (located to the right and left just below the display screen). Highlight "Create." A message screen will appear. Type the message you want using the key pad and press "OK." In the "Send" field, type the number you want to send the message to, and then press "OK." Press "Send" to send the text message.

Instructions

1. Launch Skype by either double-clicking its desktop icon or by selecting it from the "Start" menu.

2. Type in your username and password. A list appears on the side of the screen with all of the current online users. A green check signifies the user is online, and a small video camera icon next to the username shows the individual is capable of performing a video conference call.

3. Connect your webcam to the computer (if it isn't already) and select the "Options" menu in Skype. Chose the webcam features and select your connected webcam as the video device you want to use.

4. Click on the conference call username and a display box appears on the screen with your video on it. Once the other individual on the conference call accepts your request to join, you are able to see their faces (you may need to perform the connection with every user on the conference call if you want to see and here what they are saying and doing).

Unlock A Bt Mobile

BT is a business, broadband and mobile broadband provider in the United Kingdom. BT locks the 3G USB wireless modems they sell with their service plans. This prohibits the modems from being used with any other service provider. If you want to use the 3G modem in a country where BT does not offer service, or if your BT contract is up and want to use the modem with another service provider, you must first unlock the modem.

Instructions

1. When you purchase a 3G USB modem, register it with an Internet service provider. If you purchased the 3G USB modem directly from the manufacturer, it is not locked to a specific service provider. If you bought it directly from a service provider, it is locked to the provider's network, which means you can only use that particular network. To use another service provider, unlock the 3G USB modem.

2. Contact your local BT service provider or visit BT's website and send an email requesting the contact information for your local BT service provider.

3. Gather your contract information and have it ready for your phone conversation.

4. Ask to speak with a wireless broadband representative and explain your need to unlock the 3G modem. In most cases the agent will be happy to help you unlock the modem.

5. Pay any agreed-upon charge for unlocking the modem. Follow the steps given by the agent.

7. Find the identifying IEMI number located on the USB modem. This is a 15-digit identification number placed on all cellular phones and mobile broadband devices. It can be located on the underside, side or upper side of the modem.

8. Choose the manufacturer of the USB modem, as BT works with several manufacturers. There will be a list of manufacturers from which to choose on the website. This information is found on the USB modem, either on the top or bottom side.

You've had enough of your mobile phone and want to replace it. When looking for a new mobile phone, the key to finding the one that fits your needs is to know why you want a new phone in the first place. Know what features you don't like on your current phone and start from there. It can save some valuable talk time in the end.

Tools For Measuring The Circumference Of A Storm

Meteorologists use a variety of tools for measuring the size and strength of storms.

Though weather has been a constant issue that people have had to deal with, meteorology, the science of weather, has only existed for about 300 years. That is when scientists first began creating simple measuring instruments, such as the thermometer and barometer, to help them to study and understand the weather. While more advanced versions of these instruments are still used today, scientists now have far more advanced tools for measuring the size of a storm and tracking it.

Satellites

Geostationary satellites are used to provide constant information on weather patterns and enable meteorologists to determine the circumference of a storm and to track a storm's movement. Satellites use a radiometer to provide images of cloud and water vapor in the air. The circumference can be calculated from satellite images by creating a scale using a known distance that is also displayed in the image, usually a geologic feature such as the size of a particular island or the length of one side of a state.

Radar

Radar is used by meteorologists to determine the extend of a storm's precipitation as well as it's intensity. Radar can only be used to measure precipitation in the sky and not the amount of the rainfall due to the interference from structures on the ground, but radar mapping provides meteorologists with a good idea of the size and intensity of a storm. Radar aboard weather aircraft provides a three dimensional view of the wind flow inside, giving scientists a better idea of the shape and size of a storm.

Other Instruments

Beyond measuring the circumference of a storm, meteorologists use a variety of instruments to provide further information about the storm such as the speed of the winds and the storm's intensity. Anemometers are used to measure wind speed. The dropwindsond, also called a dropsonde, is a probe used by weather aircraft to measure air pressure, dewpoint, and atmospheric pressure. It comes equipped with GPS positioning which enables it to detect horizontal and vertical winds. In addition to the dropwindsonde, weather aircraft use a variety of probes to gather information on storms including Aircraft Expendable BathyThermographs (AXBTs), Aircraft Expendable Current Probes (AXCPs) and Airborne Expendable Conductivity Temperature Depth (AXCTD) probes.

Get A Bluetooth In Pairing Mode

Place your Bluetooth device in pairing mode so you can connect it with another device.

Pairing mode refers to configuring a Bluetooth-enabled device so it is ready to accept the pairing or connection with another device. Although a device may have Bluetooth, this feature is not automatically available for pairing. Keeping a Bluetooth device out of pairing mode helps to secure the device and its data. The steps required to place a device in pairing mode varies per device type and model, but most devices require a similar process.

Instructions

1. Power on the device that is enabled with Bluetooth.

2. Turn on the Bluetooth feature. To turn on Bluetooth in a headset, press the "Answer/Call" button in until the LED light comes on. For Bluetooth-enabled mobile phones, access the Bluetooth menu, which is often located in Settings or Options menu in your phone's main menu. Then select to turn the Bluetooth on. The device is now in pairing mode.

3. Search for devices. Some Bluetooth-enabled devices, such as headsets, only require that other devices find them; they don't need to search for devices themselves. Cell phones and computers, on the other hand, will need to search for Bluetooth-enabled devices. Select "Find New Devices," or a similar option, from the Bluetooth menu. Then select the device from the list of found devices, and the two devices will be paired.

Play Songs From An Ipod Without Syncing

Once you put new songs onto your iPod, the songs become synced with all of the other songs on your iPod, and any new songs you have on your hard drive are added to your music library. This is only done if you don't manually control your iPod and you have it automatically update to find new songs on your computer. You can sync songs from your computer at any time by clicking on the "Sync" button from the "Summary" tab of your iPod in iTunes. The best way to not disrupt your playlists or songs already in your library is to play and add songs manually without syncing.

Instructions

1. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB cord. Itunes will pop up and you should see your iPod displayed. Click on the iPod icon under the "Devices" heading.

2. Click on the "Summary" tab and then check the box next to the "Manually manage music and videos" option. Click on the "Apply" button to save this change. The content of iTunes and the iPod are now separate and will no longer sync.

3. Play songs on your iPod through iTunes to test that the manual mode is working properly. Songs from your iTunes library will also not become updated into your iPod. So, if you want to add a song you must drag it from your iTunes library or from where it's stored on your computer to the iPod icon in your iTunes.

4. Delete any song on your iPod manually by right clicking on the song while in your iPod and clicking on the "Delete" option. If you delete a song it will be gone forever, unlike when your iPod was synced with iTunes.

5. Disconnect you iPod carefully by clicking on the "File" option and "Disconnect iPod". If you're using a Mac, you can drag the iPod icon into your Trash to have it disconnect. Before when the iPod and iTunes were synced you didn't need to do this, but now you need to make sure to use one of these disconnecting methods so that you don't lose any data. The next time you connect your iPod you'll still be in manual mode and be able to listen to all of your songs without syncing.

What Does Evdo Mean On A Cell Phone

EVDO refers to mobile broadband access; it doesn't affect call quality.

Cell phone technologies keep advancing, and with their advancement comes a plethora of new acronyms for consumers to learn. As of April 2011, EVDO is currently in wide use throughout the United States, although it's rapidly being phased out by newer, faster technology. Whether your phone uses EVDO depends largely on the phone itself, as well as your cellular service provider.

EVDO Meaning

EVDO is an acronym for Evolution Data Optimized, a specific type of 3G, or third generation, mobile broadband service. It only runs on cell phones using the CDMA, or Code Division Multiple Access standard. It's a means of accessing the Internet wirelessly via your cell phone, without the need to connect to a Wi-Fi hotspot -- as long as you're within range of cell phone towers that support this service. Not all cell phone providers offer this service; two major carriers in the United States that do are Sprint and Verizon.

Comparison

Regarding speed, EVDO Rev A is most comparable with HSPA, another 3G mobile broadband technology used by AT&T. EVDO Rev A features download speeds ranging from 600 Kbps to 1,400 Kbps, with bursts up to 3.1 Mbps. Upload speeds range from 500 Kbps to 800 Kbps, with bursts up to 1.8 Mbps. Meanwhile, HSPA features download speeds ranging from 700 Kbps to 1700 Kbps, and upload speeds ranging from 500 Kbps to 1200 Kbps. As of April 2011, 4G technologies, such as WiMax and LTE, are the only cell phone services that are faster -- provided you have a solid signal.

Considerations

Two speeds of EVDO are available for cell phones. EVDO Rev 0 is the older and slower one; EVDO Rev A is newer and faster. Depending on carrier availability and phone compatibility, you may be able to tether your computer to your EVDO-enabled cell phone, which allows you to use it as a mobile hotspot wherever you are. If it is available, additional charges for this service are likely charged by your carrier. EVDO cell phone service is most prevalent in North America, and most specifically in the United States. Some carriers also offer EVDO service in Canada and Mexico, but it is not widely used elsewhere in the world. Also, your EVDO speeds, like your call quality, depend largely on how strong signal is in your area. If you are nowhere near areas where your cell phone carrier provides service, you may see your cell phone display the acronym "1X" in place of the "EV" graphic you're used to seeing. That means you're out of range of EVDO, but you can access the Internet using 1XRTT technology, which is a 2 G standard available across the United States. Speeds range from 50 Kbps to 100 Kbps both downloading and uploading, with bursts of up to 144 Kbps either way.

Warning

When you're choosing a cell phone and carrier, take into account where and how you'll be using your phone most frequently. If you live and work in an area with strong EVDO support with a particular carrier, and do not travel out of that area frequently, EVDO is a good choice for you. However, if you frequently find yourself in the middle of nowhere and can only get 1X reception, the added expense of an EVDO phone and accompanying data plan may not be worth it. Also, keep in mind that cell phones that offer navigation plans frequently rely on 3G technologies -- including EVDO. If you rely on cell phone navigation programs when driving, seriously consider your mobile broadband options before traveling.

Today's cell phones offer options that far outweigh simple calling capability.

Nokia's N95 eight gigabyte black phone has many user capabilities. According to GSM Arena, it was released October 2007 and is useful on both the 2G and 3G networks. Its features include a speakerphone, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, a five megapixel camera, a 3.5 mm audio jack and a video camera all compacted into 2.8 inches.

Shortcuts

After opening the Nokia N95 Black's menu, scrolling can be accomplished quickly by using the numeric keypad. Pressing "1" will open the first option in the menu and the numbers have successive use thereafter. A second functional shortcut allows for easy copying and pasting. This can be done by using the scroll key to select text while holding the edit key at the same time to copy the text. Pressing the edit key again will paste the information. A third useful shortcut is using the power key to change your profile selection. Quickly pressing the power key will allow you to select a different profile from the list.

Imaging Tips

Holding your the N95 Black's camera with both hands will stabilize it and keep pictures from coming out blurry when taken. You may downsize the pictures to conserve memory space by selecting "options" and "shrink." Image megapixels will be reduced so it is best to upload and/or print them beforehand. The Nokia N95 is also equipped with a secondary camera. While videos are being recorded, the secondary camera may be accessed and if the "scroll" key is pressed, it will record video clips while the primary camera is in use. All pictures captured or videos recorded with the N95 Black may viewed on your television as well. Simply, connect a Nokia video-Out cable from the 3.5 mm output connector on your N95 Black to the video input connector on your television.

Music Player Tips

Sliding down the top of the N95 Black will open the music player and reveal several keys that can be used to control audio. Music tracks may be sorted by file name, date or size by selecting "options" once the music player is open. If in a situation where cell phone use is prohibited such as on a plane or in a hospital, you may put the N95 Black into an offline setting by quickly pressing the power key and selecting "offline" from the generated list of profile settings.

Mobile Browsing

Pressing and holding "0" will open the web browser. Pressing and holding "1" will open bookmarks. Number "3" can be used as a back button. Number "6" will allow you to navigate between open windows and number "9" will open a new web page.

Navigate Yahoo Web Pages

Choose Your Username and Password

4. Create a username that you will be comfortable using for a long time and will identify you to your email recipients. Remember that you can use numbers and letters and even a single dot.

5. Type the username you choose in the field provided. Check the availability of your username by clicking the box below that reads 'Check Availability of This ID.' You may have to think of an alternative username if your top choice is already taken by another Yahoo user.

6. Choose a password when you have successfully entered a unique username. Passwords must be at least 6 characters long and keep in mind that passwords are case-sensitive. You will be asked to type your password twice to ensure accuracy.

Enter Security Information and Verify Your Registration

7. Select a question from the following drop-down menu as your security question. Yahoo will ask you this question if you should forget your password in the future, in order to verify that you are the correct user.

8. Type in your answer to the question in the field below.

1. Enter the generic code for your phone and press "OK." Your generic code will normally be "0000" or "1234." If these codes do not work to unlock you phone, and you have not created the personalized passcode, check your phone manual or call your wireless provider to obtain your phone's generic passcode.

2. Press the pound ("#') key and enter your security code. This is a six-digit number that is usually set to "000000."

3. Call your phone manufacture and give the make and model of your cell phone to the agent. Ask for a reset code. In some cases, he or she will be able to reset the phone by canceling out your personalized code and replacing it with a generic one.

4. Contact your wireless provider. Go to the store you purchased your phone from and explain to them that you have created the passcode, but you can no longer remember what it is. You will need to provide your account details to the customer service agent to unlock your handset. This may include your cell phone number, date of birth, address and answers to any security questions set on the account.

5. Call your wireless provider. They will ask the security questions set for your account and for your account details. They will troubleshoot your phone in order to restore it to factory settings. From here you'll be able to reset your passcode.

Ubuntu Linux is a free, open-source PC operating system. Skype is a widely used audio chat application. Skype places calls for free to other computers running Skype over the Internet or provides a paid service allowing users to call landline and mobile phones all over the world. Configure your headset microphone with Skype in Ubuntu and be heard in Skype calls.

Instructions

1. Plug your headset microphone into your computer. Plug USB headsets into your computer's USB slot or plug the audio connector into your computer's "Microphone" audio jack. Headset microphones won't function if they're plugged into the wrong audio jack.

2. Open the "Sound Preferences" tool by clicking "System," "Preferences" and "Sound."

3. Click the "Input" tab at the top of the "Sound Preferences" window.

4. Select the headset device by clicking it in the "Choose a Device for Sound Input" list at the bottom of the "Sound Preferences" window if multiple devices are present.

5. Click the "Connector" box in the "Sound Preferences" window and click the connector the headset microphone is plugged into in the list. For example, click "Analog Microphone."

6. Adjust the input volume of the headset microphone by clicking and dragging the "Input Volume" slider under the "Input" tab to the right or left.

7. Verify the headset microphone isn't muted by clicking the "Mute" checkbox to the right of "Input Volume" if it is checked.

8. Test your headset microphone by talking into it. The "Input Level" indicator in the "Sound Preferences" window moves when Ubuntu detects audio input.

9. Open Skype by clicking "Applications," "Internet" and "Skype."

10. Log in to your Skype account.

11. Open the Skype preferences window by clicking the small blue "Skype" icon at the bottom-left corner of the "Skype" window and clicking "Options."

12. Click the "Sound Devices" option in the left sidebar of Skype's "Options" window.

13. Click the "Allow Skype to Automatically Adjust My Mixer Level" checkbox in the "Options" window if it isn't checked.

14. Verify your headset microphone is configured correctly by making a test call. Click the "Make a Test Call" button in Skype's "Options" window and talk into your headset microphone when prompted.

When you purchase a Nokia 1600 cell phone through any service provider, the phone is locked so that it cannot be used with any other carrier. To sign up for service with a new provider, you have to unlock the Nokia 1600, which requires getting an accurate unlock code.

Instructions

1. Get the IMEI number off of your phone by typing "*#06#" with the phone's keypad. The IMEI number will appear on the screen.

2. Go to the Nokia 1600 unlock calculator at the Unlock.nokiafree.org website (see Resources). The website is an all-Nokia phone site that has unlock codes for every Nokia phone, regardless of network.

3. Enter the IMEI number in the first box of the calculator, select your network from the drop-down list provided and select the proper generation of your phone next to "GEN."

4. Click the "Get Nokia DCT4 Unlock Codes" button to process the information and display codes for your phone.

5. Try no more than two or three of the codes that are listed for your cell phone. Entering an incorrect unlock code into a Nokia 1600 five times will lock your phone so that it cannot be unlocked by a code.

6. Use a paid service to get a verified unlock code for your Nokia 1600 cell phone. Unlock.Nokiafree.org has its own paid service at Ucables.com (see Resources).There are other paid sites available, like mrunlock.com (see Resources.) Prices vary from site to site, but most code-generating sites guarantee accuracy of their codes.

7. Remove the SIM card from your phone and power it on. Enter the unlock code, which will both begin and end with a pound sign. A pop-up message that says "Phone restrictions off" will appear to let you know that the phone is unlocked.

Low Memory

If the memory on your Nokia cell phone is too low, delete your inbox messages and sent messages from their folders. If you receive email messages, you can also delete retrieved ones from your phone's memory. Deleting saved browser pages may also be very helpful. In addition, you can remove images and photos, contact information, calendar notes, games scores, call timers and any other data that may be taking up memory space unnecessarily. If you need the data later, you can save it by using the Nokia PC Suite to make a backup copy of all of it to your computer (as long as it is compatible). You can also email your images or store data onto a memory card before deleting it.

Bluetooth Connectivity

If you are having problems connecting to someone else's device with your Bluetooth, make sure both devices are activated and are compatible. Also make sure the distance between the two devices is not over 32 feet. There must be no walls or barriers between the devices. You may also need to make sure that the other device is not in hidden mode. If you experience problems ending a Bluetooth connection and another device is joined to your Bluetooth device, you can use that device to end the connection; or you can disable the connection by pressing the Menu button, selecting "Connect," choosing "Bluetooth" and pressing "Off."

Multimedia Messaging

If your Nokia device is having trouble receiving a multimedia message, it might be because the memory is full. Delete data if this is the case. To view the data you have in your memory, and how much memory you have in the various data groups, press the "Menu" button and select "Tools," then "File Manager." Choose "Options" and "Memory Details." If your device keeps making a data connection, you can end the connections by pressing the "Menu" button and selecting "Messaging." Then choose "Options," "Settings" and "Multimedia Message." If you do not want to answer any of your multimedia messages, choose "Multimedia Retrieval" and "Off." Once you do this, your device will not make any network multimedia messaging connections.

Both Verizon and Cricket phones use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) card. This card lets you unlock the phone and switch to the Verizon network. Unlocking the phone involves removing the restriction lock. Once it has been removed, you are free to use your cell phone with Verizon Wireless. Cricket will provide you with the unlock code when you contact customer service. Depending on the terms, you may have to pay a fee for this service.

Instructions

1. Enter *#06# in your phone's keypad. This displays your 15- to 17-digit IMEI number. Write it down and keep it nearby for reference. The IMEI number is also located under your phone's battery.

2. Dial *611 to contact Cricket customer service. Ask for an unlock code. Provide your phone's IMEI number. Pay any fees associated with unlocking your phone.

3. Remove the protective cover from the back of your phone. Take out the battery and old SIM card. Reinsert the battery and replace the cover.

4. Enter the unlock code. Wait for notification you successfully unlocked your phone.

5. Bring your phone with you to a Verizon store. Ask to have your phone flashed and activated to the Verizon network. Flashing involves removing the programming from Cricket and replacing it with Verizon's programming. Activating involves inserting a SIM card so you can use your phone on the network.

Every time you turn on your cell phone, it broadcasts its location. Cell phones manufactured in 2005 and earlier may only announce that location relative to the nearest cellular transmission tower. More recent models are more precise, locating themselves within 100 meters of their exact location. Using embedded Global Positioning System (GPS) software, these phones also transmit location data whenever you make a 911 emergency call. Such cell phones are GPS equipped. Cell phones that extend this GPS capacity by allowing you to locate them at any time are also GPS enhanced. Understanding the difference between these terms is essential if you want to find a cell phone by using its GPS capability.

Instructions

1. Determine if your cell phone and any others you want to locate are GPS enhanced. If your cell phone is a third-generation (3G) cell phone--also called a smartphone--it will include this feature. Earlier cell phones may not. Contact your cell phone manufacturer to find out if your phone is GPS enhanced.

2. Find out if your wireless service provider supports GPS location tracking. GPS tracking applications are data intensive and place a heavy load on your service provider's equipment. If you have an account with one of the major service providers such as AT&T, Nextel, T-Mobile, Verizon or Sprint, you will have this functionality. If your account is with a less well-known company, you may not. Check with your provider to be sure.

3. Locate tracking software that matches your needs. Your wireless provider may supply tracking software. Verizon, for example, offers Chaperone, which you can use to track the location of cell phones your children use. If you are more interested in staying in touch with your friends, social messaging products like the iPhone application Loopt and Google's Latitude may be more appropriate. Both were recently reviewed by "PC World."

4. Check if your cell phone brand can use the tracking software. Loopt, for instance, only works with iPhones. Latitude currently supports only Google Android phones, color BlackBerry devices and Windows Mobile phones.

5. Determine the cost of GPS tracking. Loopt and Latitude are free applications, but you will be charged your usual wireless provider's data transmission rates while using them. Chaperone charges a flat $10 to your monthly Verizon bill.

6. Locate the tracking software you want with your phone's browser and download it. If you want to also use your computer for cell phone tracking, you will need to download companion software to it as well. Google makes this easy with Latitude. All you need to do is add a Latitude gadget to your iGoogle page.

7. Run your tracking program. You will need to input additional data for the program to operate. Loopt and Latitude will ask you to identify the friends whose cell phone locations you want to track. Once you select them, they will receive email messages asking them to give you permission to track them. If they grant that permission, their icons appear on a Google map of their locations. As they and their cell phones travel, their icons move to different map locations. Your cell phone's location will be pinpointed too, making it easy for you and your friends to get together.

Unlock A Security Code On A Phone

Cell phones generally come with security codes.

It's possible--though not always easy--to unlock a phone that's been locked with a security code. Your carrier's customer service department can often help. Sometimes you can generate a code online to get around the forgotten security code. But one thing you don't want to do is to try to guess your security code by trial and error. Phones generally limit how many tries you can make, and some cell phones--BlackBerries, for example--are especially inconvenient to unlock once you hit that point.

Instructions

1. Try the code you programmed for the phone. Depending on the model of phone you have, you'll want to avoid trying all possible codes you might have used, because you could make the phone even harder to unlock with too many attempts. To avoid this, write down your security codes somewhere that you don't store your phone.

2. Try the factory default code. Some phones, such as Nokias, are programmed with a factory default code that is mentioned in the owner's manual--something simple like 12345.

3. Contact your service provider. Locked cell phones generally allow you to call customer service and 911. Have your international mobile equipment identifier (IMEI number) ready. You can get this number from the inside of the battery compartment. Customer service may be able to help you over the phone once you sufficiently identify yourself. However, you might have to mail in the phone for them to unlock it.

Bluetooth is a type of technology found in electronics that allows you to send and receive signals and files wirelessly. Most commonly used in cell phone headsets, many people also use Bluetooth to transfer data. There is no set protocol for all devices, so instructions for use vary from one device to another. Check out the following loose guidelines for sending music from one Bluetooth phone to another, or from a Bluetooth-enabled computer to phone.

Instructions

1. Verify that Bluetooth is turned on or enabled in both your devices. Most cell phones will have a Bluetooth menu in their Settings or Tools. For computers, you may see a Bluetooth icon in your system tray. If unsure, check your product manual for specific instructions.

2. Follow the instructions to pair (connect) your two devices. If you are asked for a passkey, try entering 0000 which is usually the default for any device.

3. When prompted on the other device, give permission for the original device to access it.

If transferring from phone to phone

4. Navigate to the song you want to send and hit the button that takes you to the options menu. Choose the option to send your song; depending on the brand of phone it may say "Send" or "Move."

5. The next menu should ask if you want to use a text message or Bluetooth to move or send the file. Choose Bluetooth.

6. When prompted on the phone receiving the file, accept it.

If transferring from computer to phone

7. Look for an option to browse the contents of the phone. Navigate to the Music or Multimedia folder on your phone.

8. Navigate to the place on your computer where your music file is kept in a separate window.

9. Drag the file from its original location to the correct folder on your phone.

10. Accept the file when prompted by your phone.

Contract-free, wireless cell phones allow you to experience all the freedom of owning a cell phone without having to pay outrageous monthly fees. One of the companies that is well known for contract-free service is TracFone. This company allows you to port your old cell phone number over to its services so you can continue to get phone calls and texts, but discontinue paying monthly service charges.

Instructions

1. Purchase a cell phone that can be used with Tracfone services. Not every cell phone will work with every provider, and you need to research the product to ensure that it works with Tracfone. The phone may be purchased online, or at a third party retailer.

2. Open your Web browser and go to the Tracfone page called "Transferring my Number from Another Company."

3. Read the information and carefully go over the details regarding transferring your phone number. The phone number that you want to transfer should still be active before you transfer it. Do not cancel the phone number before you activate the new phone.

4. Click the box at the bottom of the page stating that you "Agree to The Above Terms." Click the blue button that says "Continue" at the bottom of the Tracfone page.

5. Enter the wireless serial number from your new tracfone into the website. The number will be between 11 and 18 numbers long, and it can be found on the back of your phone or in your new phone paperwork. Click the button at the bottom of the Tracfone webpage that says "Continue" and fill in the rest of the required personal information.

6. Contact your previous cell phone provider and let it know you are porting your phone number to another company. Cancel your contract only after the number has completely ported over to the new Tracfone.

Traditional telephone calls can be expensive, particularly if you often have to make international calls. Many people are using VoIP phone service --- which costs less --- as an alternative to traditional telephone lines. An even better solution is to sign up for a free Voice over Internet Protocol service, such as Skype, Google Chat or Windows Live Messenger. The only disadvantage of these services is that you can only complete calls if the person you are calling has the same application installed on his computer, and is online at the same time.

Instructions

Using Skype

1. Download and install Skype on your computer. Get all the other people you might want to call to download and install Skype on their computers.

2. Go to "Start" > "All Programs" > "Skype" and run the application.

3. Click "Don't have a Skype name?" Then sign up by entering a username and password along with other required details. Once you've signed up, log in by entering username and password.

4. Go to "Contacts" from the top menu, and click "Add a Contact."

5. Enter the Skype name of the person you wish to call. Skype will then search for the particular Skype name, and show you the option to "Add" him. Select this option, and add the person to your contact list. When the person logs in to his Skype account, he will have to accept your request, then he will appear as "Online" on your list.

6. Double-click the contact when he's online, and click the "Call" button. Adjust your speakers and microphone volume so both the parties can hear each other. The call will be connected when the other party accepts the call. You can talk for free as long as you want to.

Using Google Chat

7. Make an account on Google if you don't have one already. Go to Gmail website, and click "Sign Up." Then fill out the registration form and access your new email inbox. Tell parties you wish to call to set up accounts, too.

8. Click the "Chat" tab on the left menu on your Google inbox page.

9. Enter the Google email address of the person you want to call for free in the blank field under "Chat." Click "Invite to Chat" in the small menu that appears. Now wait for the other party to log in to his Google account where he will be prompted to accept your request. After adding, he will appear as online on your chat list.

10. Double-click the contact. A small chat box will appear on the bottom right of the page.

11. Click the "Call" icon to connect the call with the other party. After he accepts the call, you will be connected to the free call.

Live Messenger

12. Download and install Windows Live Messenger on your computer. Also, get other parties to download and install it on their computers.

13. Go to "Start" > "All Programs" > "Windows Live Messenger." Click "Sign up" if you don't have an account already. Then fill out the registration form, and sign in using your username and password.

14. Click the "Add" button, and enter the Windows Live ID of the other person to add. Confirm that you wish to add the person. Once he accepts your request, he will appear as online on your chat list.

15. Double-click the contact to open an individual chat box.

16. Click the "Call" button from the chat box menu. The call will connect to the other party when he accepts the call.

Clean The Rollers On A Phaser 6120

The Xerox Phaser 6120 uses laser printing technology to transfer digital images and text to paper, creating hard copies. In order to create the printouts, the Phaser 6120 uses a series of rollers to move the paper through the inside of the machine. The toner powder, or the ink used in the Phaser 6120, as well as paper dust can eventually build up on the rollers with continued use of the printer. You may notice more paper jams or even black or grey streaks on the paper as a result. Cleaning the rollers takes a few moments of your time.

Instructions

1. Unplug the printer's power cord from the back of the printer, remove any paper left in the printer's output tray and fold the tray's extension. Pull up on the handle located at the front of the Phaser 6120's top cover, swinging the cover open and toward the rear of the machine.

2. Grab the handle on the top of the toner cartridge and pull up until the cartridge comes free from the printer. Place the toner cartridge on a scrap piece of paper in an area without direct sunlight.

3. Wipe the feed rollers clean using a dry and clean microfiber cloth, making sure to turn the wheels so you clean the entire surface. Reinsert the toner cartridge in the same direction it sat inside the printer before, then lower the top cover so that it snaps closed.

4. Fold down the duplexer's cover on the backside of the printer, exposing the duplexer's rollers. Clean the rollers with a dry microfiber cloth, turning them as you did the feed rollers, then push the duplexer's cover back into place so that it clicks.

5. Grasp the notches located on the sides of the printer at the bottom of paper tray 1, then lift the printer up to separate it from paper tray 2. Place the printer on a sturdy and level table, far away from the edge.

6. Wipe down the rollers located inside paper tray 2 using a dry microfiber cloth, making sure to turn the wheels so you clean the entire wheel surface. Lower the printer back onto paper tray 2 carefully , lining up the edges of the printer with the edges of the tray. Plug the printer's power cord back into the back of the printer.

A landline phone jack, or an RJ-11 phone jack, is a type of electrical outlet that allows you to connect a telephone set to a telephone line via an RJ-11 connector. Telephone jacks are designed to last for years and can even last decades without giving you any problems, but just like any other equipment, a telephone jack can become defective. Various types of problems can beset a phone jack, but due to its inexpensive cost and the trouble of repairing it, replacing the faulty jack with a new one is generally done. Learn to fix a faulty phone jack and save yourself some money.

Instructions

1. Open the telephone interface box outside your house and unplug the modular connector located inside. The interface box is typically located on a wall nearest to where the telephone line from the utility pole runs into your house. Unplugging the connector disconnects your house telephone line from the telephone company line and prevents low voltage electric shock which can occur once somebody calls your phone while you're working on it.

2. Open the phone jack by removing its cover. Pry off a snap-on type cover by inserting a flat head screwdriver along the its edge, or unscrew the cover if it has a retaining screw on top.

3. Loosen the terminal screws inside the jack and disconnect all the wires. Remove the faulty jack from the wall using either method:

--Pry off the jack if it is held by a double-sided mounting tape using a flat head screwdriver.

--Unscrew the jack if it is held in place by a retaining screw using a screwdriver.

4. Remove the cover of a new RJ-11 phone jack and install the new jack on the wall by attaching it using a double-sided mounting tape or screw that came with the jack. Connect the telephone wires onto the jack by wrapping each color-coded wire clockwise to its matching color-coded terminal screw and then tightening each screw.

5. Replace the jack cover. Reconnect your house phone line to the telephone company line by replugging the connector inside the telephone interface box outside your house. Plug your phone into the new jack and place a call.

The MobiMB Mobile Media Browser for Nokia phones is a software application produced by the UK-based LogoManager Company. MobiMB software allows the user to customize color logos and polyphonic ringtones on the Nokia phone. Instructions

1. Select one of the download provider links for the MobiMB Media Browser for Nokia Phones (see Resources below).

2. Open a web browser and enter the URL for the selected download provider.

3. Click the "Download" or "Download Now" link or button.

4. Click the "Save" button to save the installation file to the computer hard drive.

5. Navigate to the saved installation file and double-click the file to begin installation of the program to the PC.

6. Click "Next" when the setup wizard opens to begin the installation.

7. Click the check box to agree to the terms and conditions of use of the software.

8. Click the "Next" button to continue installation.

9. Enter the name and email address of the primary user in the respective input boxes.

10. Click the check boxes to include the optional selections on the following page. Selections include "Add Shortcuts to the Start Menu," "Add Shortcuts to the Desktop," and "Start the Software when Setup is finished."

Configure Wireless For Nokia 9500

The 9500 Communicator is a business-class mobile phone by Nokia that offers business features and connectivity options for communication. Along with GPRS, EDGE and Bluetooth, it also offers Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) for connecting to the Internet. Before connecting your Nokia 9500 to the Internet through a wireless network, you must first configure the phone to connect to the wireless network. Your phone can automatically detect wireless networks in its range. All you have to do is connect to the desired network once and the phone will save the configurations.

Instructions

1. Open the Nokia 9500's menu and go to "Control Panel."

2. Select "Connections" and then select "Wireless LAN."

3. Go to the "Networks" options under the "Wireless LAN" menu. Here you'll see a list of all the wireless networks that your Nokia 9500 can currently detect.

4. Select the wireless network to which you wish to connect and choose the option, "Create Access Point."

5. Select "OK," then enter the security key if prompted and select "OK." If the network you're trying to connect with is a protected network, you'll be asked to enter the security key.

6. Press "OK" on the screen that gives information about the new access point you have created. This completes the configuration required to connect to a wireless network. You can now browse the Web through the phone's built-in web browser. To open the browser, open the phone's menu and select "Web."

Instructions

1. Open the Sony Ericsson PC Suite website. (See Resources.)

2. Click "Download now." If prompted for a location to save the file to your computer, save it in an easy-to-remember location.

3. Uninstall any version of PC Suite you currently have on your computer. Click "Start" in the bottom left, then "Control Panel." In Windows 7 and Vista, click "Programs and Features." In earlier versions of Windows, click "Add or Remove Programs. Select Sony Ericsson PC Suite and click "Remove."

4. Locate the downloaded file. Double-click to run the Sony Ericsson PC Suite Installer. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the program.

5. Launch PC Suite. If you left the default installation options alone, click "Start," then "All Programs," then "Sony Ericsson," then "Sony Ericsson PC Suite," then the Sony Ericsson PC Suite version you installed.

6. Click "Connect" in the top-left to run the Connection Wizard. Follow the prompts to connect your phone to your computer. Do not connect the phone to the USB cable in your computer until you are prompted to do so.

7. Select "Files" on the left. PC Suite displays a list of files from your computer on the left and your phone on the right. Select the files you wish to copy, and click the arrow in the middle that points to your phone.

8. Select "Text Messages," "Picture Messages," "Contacts" or "Calendar" to copy these items from your phone to your computer. Select the files in the right pane under "My Phone." Select a destination location on your computer and click the arrow in the middle that points to your computer.

Tango Voice And Video Calls

Tango is an app that allows you to make free voice or video calls over 3G, 4G and Wi-Fi networks. To utilize Tango, both parties need to have Tango installed. Tango offers free international calling with Tango users as well as free communication between other Android or Apple iOS devices such as iTouch, iPad and iPhone that have Tango installed. Tango is a free app available from the Android Market. A key feature is the ability to start a call as a voice call and then change it to a video call and back as needed.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile is the one carrier in the U.S. to offer free Wi-Fi calling as part of its services. To utilize Wi-Fi calling, you need to ensure that the feature is included in your calling plan. T-Mobile's app, called Wi-Fi Calling, requires the Even More or Even More Plus Postpaid rate plans to work and of course you will need a phone that can run the app.

Use Dialup On A Smart Phone

You need a data-enabled SIM card to use Internet from your phone.

Your smartphone can function as a dial-up Bluetooth modem to use the Internet available from your phone's network on your computer. You can also use its USB connection to the computer to enable Internet use.

There are two ways to connect to the Internet using your smartphone: GPRS or dial-up. While GPRS, or general packet radio service, provides faster connection speeds, dial-up requires no subscription fee and it only bills you for standard call rates for the time you used the Internet.

Instructions

1. Get a data-enabled SIM card from your network operator. Smartphones generally come with all the software needed to connect to the Internet and even share the connection to your computer.

You must have an account with an Internet provider to connect. You can use your existing Internet account or apply for a free pay-as-you-go account that can be used with your smartphone, like the free-of-charge BT Yahoo. Set up the account on the device according to the specifications provided to you after signing up.

2. Choose the Bluetooth or USB connection to connect your smartphone to your computer. By successfully pairing or connecting the phone with your computer, along with the correct phone and computer settings required by your phone manufacturer and your mobile network, your mobile phone device can provide Internet connection to your computer, according to the connection speed offered by your network.

While Bluetooth offers the convenience of being a wireless type of connection, USB provides faster top-speed modem transfers.

3. Set up the settings for "Dial-up Networking" between your phone and your computer.

While mobile networks generally offer standard or pre-customized settings, it is also possible to go for a manual dial-up networking route. For manual settings, choose your "Device Name" (your smartphone), "Connection Name" (your preferred connection name), "Number to Dial" (information from your network), "Connection Availability" (depends on your phone and network's requirements, but generally you can choose an option referring to anyone's use), "User Name" (information from your network, but usually involves your mobile phone number and network used) and "Password" (information usually coming from your network).

4. Confirm or activate the configuration. Depending on the type of phone you have, go to the "Connection" or "Start" and then to the "Accessories" menus. Choose the "Activate" option, then press "On." Take note that some phones may automatically be confirmed or activated for dial-up use after a successful dial-up networking set-up.

5. Click "Dial" or "Connect" to establish the Internet connection. Depending on the computer you use, find the "Network Connection" icon in your taskbar to verify that you are successfully connected.

Humidity and wind are the easiest weather forces to measure.

Making weather instruments from household items is an inexpensive and exciting science project for kids. It allows children to manipulate and interpret weather events that otherwise seem mysterious. Working with the weather gives young children an opportunity to engage in inquiry-based learning, establishing a hypothesis and using homemade weather instruments to test their predictions. Weather instruments can be made and used one at a time, or made together and used in conjunction as a weather station.

Rain Gauge

Make a rain gauge from an empty plastic container. Use a permanent marker to mark the side of the container. Draw and label a mark every 1/2 or 1/2 inch all the way up the side of the container. The most important thing to remember when selecting a container to use as a rain gauge is that it must have a flat bottom and straight, vertical sides to be accurate. The general shape of the container does not matter. It can be round or square, as long as it has a consistent diameter. Do not use something like a pop bottle or sour cream container that has a telescoping or hour-glass shape.

Wind Sock

Wind socks show what direction the wind is blowing and changes in the wind's direction. Make a wind sock by taking the lid off a round cardboard oatmeal container and cutting off the bottom so you have a hollow tube. Decorate the tube with construction paper, contact paper, stickers, glitter and other craft supplies. Glue or tape crepe paper streamers around the bottom of the tube to create tails around the base of the sock. Punch two holes in the top edge of the tube and tie a long ribbon between them to serve as a hanger. Hang the sock from a tree branch, porch rail or post. The less sheltered the hanging location, the more accurate the sock's movements will be in relation to the wind's actual direction and strength.

Barometer

To make your own barometer, which measures atmospheric pressure, stretch a latex party balloon over the top of a quart mason jar. A wide-mouth jar is preferable to a narrow mouth. Stretch the party balloon over the jar's mouth so that is creates a hard, flat surface, like the top of a drum. Put a strong rubber band over the mouth of the jar and the neck of the balloon to secure its position. Tape a straight pin to the end of a drinking straw. Glue the opposite end of the straw to the center of the balloon, so that the straw lays horizontally across the balloon's surface. The straw and the side of the jar should meet at a 90 degree angle. Read the homemade barometer at the same time every day for the most accurate results. When pressure is high the balloon will sink down into the open mouth of the jar and the straw will point upward more, and when pressure is low the balloon will swell and the straw will point down. Use a ruler to measure the number of inches from the surface on which the jar is set to the straw. Record the measurement daily to track patterns and trends in local barometric pressure.

Hygrometer

Find a section of 2-by-4 inch lumber between 9 and 12 inches long. Cut a large triangle or arrowhead shape from a plastic container lid. Tape a dime to the plastic arrow near its point. Punch a finishing nail through the center of the triangle's base. Enlarge the hole around the nail until the pointer spins freely around the nail. Glue three long strands of human hair to the center of the arrow. Hammer the finishing nail into the 2-by-4, about 1 inch up from the base. Nail a second finishing nail 1 inch down from the top of the 2-by-4, directly parallel to the nail in the pointer. Pull the three strands of hair up to the top nail and glue them in place. The hair must be pulled tight so that the arrow is pointing horizontally for the hygrometer to operate properly. The human hair follicles react to the moisture in the air by expanding and contracting. When the air contains more moisture, the hair follicles lengthen and the arrow points down. When the air is drier, the hair follicles contract and the arrow points up. Take note of the arrow's position daily. Use a ruler to measure the rise or fall of the arrow from its center or level point.

The Nokia N63 comes with 120MB of onboard memory and features a built-in microSD card slot for up to 16GB of expanded memory. The phone supports microSD cards, which offer up to 2GB of memory, and high-capacity microSD (microSDHC) cards, which provide between 2GB and 32GB of memory, up to the phone's limit. Expanding the phone's memory will give you more room to add large-scale files, such as photos, videos and applications.

Camera and Messaging

The Nokia N63 features a 2-megapixel camera, which takes pictures at up to 1,600 by 1,200 pixels of resolution and is capable of recording video at up to 320 by 240 pixels. With Magic Jack, you don't need a microphone, only a standard home phone. It works just like a regular jack, only the computer must be on and the Internet connected in order to use it. The cost for a Magic Jack is $19.95 a year, after purchasing the initial device for $29.95. It's a great way to harness the power of the Internet to make calls -- however, some users have reported that the program was difficult to remove from their computer, so install with caution and be sure to read all agreement terms (see Resources).

Use Verizon 6900 As A Tether

Your Verizon 6900's Internet connection can be shared with your computer.

The Verizon 6900, designed by smart phone manufacturer HTC, uses the popular Windows Mobile operating system. Thanks to its use of Windows Mobile, the 6900 is compatible with tethering from the first time it is turned on. Tethering, also known as "phone as modem," is a service that allows your Verizon smart phone to share its high-speed mobile broadband connection with a computer to which it is connected. The connection can be made via a USB cable or a Bluetooth personal area network (PAN). Speeds will vary based on your proximity to a tower and the speed of the Verizon connection in your area.

Instructions

1. Launch Internet Sharing application. Recent Windows Mobile phones, including the Verizon 6900, have an application named Internet Sharing, located under the "Start" menu and the "Programs" tab. This provides a one-touch method to tether your smart phone to the computer.

2. Connect the computer and Verizon 6900. When Internet Sharing launches, you must select whether you want to initiate the connection via USB or Bluetooth personal area network. If connecting via USB, simply connect the USB cable between your phone and an available port on the computer. If you are connecting via Bluetooth, make sure that your computer has a Bluetooth radio and put your phone in discoverable mode. When the phone and computer successfully pair, the password for pairing is "0000."

3. Start the connection by pressing the "Connect" soft button in the lower-left hand corner of the display. It may take upwards of 30 seconds for the Internet connection to be initiated and shared between the phone and computer.

4. Verify the connection by checking your Network Connections menu in Windows or the wireless wide area network options in Mac OS X. Your network connection should be active. Simply launch a web browser or messaging program and make sure you have Internet access.

Send Files To A Cell Phone

It's really easy to send files to your cell phone. As long as your cell phone supports whatever file you would like to send to it, it's as easy as clicking and dragging. If you're trying to send a file that isn't supported by your cell phone, it won't work. You may be able to store it on your cell phone, but you won't be able to run it. However, you may be able to run it if you convert it to a different file. Whatever file you need to convert it to depends entirely on what files your phone supports, and every phone is different.

Instructions

Sending Files to Your Cell Phone

1. Connect your cell phone to your computer. Most cell phones connect with a Universal Serial Bus (USB) cable. If your phone came with any software, you will need to install it in order for your computer to recognize your phone's drivers.

2. Open your cell phone's folder on your computer. You do this by going to "Start" and opening "My Computer." Under the "Devices With Removable Storage" list will be your cell phone. Double-click on your cell phone to open its folder.

3. Open the folder containing the files you would like to send to your cell phone.

4. Click on the file and drag it to your cell phone's folder.

5. Remove your cell phone by clicking on the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon located on the bottom-right toolbar on your desktop.

Settings For My Nokia E51

The E51 includes a hands-free microphone headset.

Nokia released the E51 cellphone in 2007 and was discontinued in 2009. It features 96 megabytes of RAM memory, multimedia player, digital camera and an email browser. The device includes a main Settings menu along with several sub-menus. These sub-menus include display settings, security settings, tone settings and phone language settings.

Any setting within the phone can be adjusted within a few minutes.

Display Settings

The Nokia E51 allows users to alter many aspects of their display including brightness, text size and automatic dimming. The screen brightness can be adjusted using a digital slider that moves from "0" to "100." The automatic dimming feature enables users to set the number of minutes the phone must be inactive before the screen dims itself. Nokia includes four text sizes for the E51: small, medium, large and extra large.

Tone Settings

The Tone Settings menu allows you to alter ringtones, video call tones, text message tones and ringing volume. The Nokia E51 includes 12 pre-installed ringtones for users to choose from. The Nokia E51 allows users to choose the language displayed on their phone. Users can choose between English, Spanish or French as their phone language. Unlike other phones, the E51 enables users to set different languages for different activities. For instance, users can choose English as the phone display language and French as their text messaging language.

Security Settings

The Nokia E51 includes a security system to protect the contents of the phone's SIM card. Users can create screen locking system that prevents unauthorized users from operating the phone. In the Phone and SIM Card menu, users can create a four-digit PIN code that must be entered to unlock the phone's screen. Users can then set the screen to automatically lock if the phone has not been used for a designated period of time.

Unlock Your N70

When you first purchase a phone from a provider, such as T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless or AT&T, the devices are locked for use only on those networks. Unlocking your cell phone gives you the freedom to use your favorite mobile devices on different mobile networks. The Nokia N70 cell phone can be unlocked using an unlock code. Before completing an unlock, you must know your individual phone's unlock code and enter it into the device. After it is unlocked, you can insert the SIM card to another provider to use the device on that network.

Instructions

1. Locate your device's IMEI (unique identification) code. Each phone has a different IMEI code. The code is located on the compliance sticker inside the N70's battery compartment. Remove the battery cover and battery. Write down the numbers listed next to "IMEI." Verify that the number is correct, of you will not be able to obtain the unlock code.

2. Dial 611 to reach your mobile provider's customer service line. Follow the prompts until you reach a live agent. Ask the agent for the N70's unlock code. The agent will likely ask you why you want the code. Be prepared to give the agent a reason for requesting the code. For example, you may be traveling overseas and need to unlock the device for cell phone access while abroad.

3. Obtain an unlock online, if your provider cannot give you the code (see Resources). Be prepared to enter your IMEI code, email address and billing information if you obtain the code from a pay site. Before paying for a code, try a free site to see if you can get the code without paying for it.

4. Enter the unlock code. Remove the SIM card from the battery compartment. Power on the device by holding the "Power" button. Enter "#," "P," "W," "UNLOCK CODE," "1" and "#." The phone will read "SIM Restriction Off" if you correctly entered the code.

5. Power off the phone again. Insert a foreign SIM card and power the device back on. The phone will boot onto the new network.

What Are Networking Protocols

Whenever one computer is able to communicate with another, this creates a network. Networks can be as small as two computers connected together or as large as the Internet, which spans the globe as the world's largest computer network. Even at a network's smallest size, computers need to have a set of instructions or a common language in order to communicate correctly. This common language is the various network protocols.

Origin

The development of the first network protocols came in the 1970s and 1980s as a means to connect mainframe computers together. Two of the first network protocols were the Internet Protocol, or IP, and the Transmission Control Protocol, or TCP. These two protocols combine as TCP/IP and are still the primary Internet network protocol as of 2011. In fact, several of the protocols originally devised in the 1970s are still used today with only a few revisions, such as SMTP which controls sending emails, and FTP which allows the uploading and downloading of files over the Internet.

Purpose

Without network protocols in place it would be virtually impossible for computers to network and communicate with each other. Without network protocols any communications would need to take into account every single different type of computer, component manufacturer and software developer when trying to connect with another computer. By having a set of standards that all computer communications follow, communications only have to make sure they match those set standards. For example, a computer sending out a data packet over the Internet, such as a request to view a Web page, uses these standards to structure that data packet so that it not only reaches its destination, but will also be understood when it gets there.

Types

Network protocols exist at every level of communication available to a computer. This can be from programs using FTP to send files and POP3 to retrieve email on the application layer, to the protocols used to define specifications for the wiring used to connect the network together on the physical layer. Network protocols can be wide and encompass other protocols, such as TCP, or narrow with a specific focus and purpose, such as FTP.

Usage

Network protocols operate while being virtually invisible to the user. A user doesn't need to do anything special to use a certain protocol. When a user performs a network related action, such as typing a Web page URL into a browser, the computer automatically uses the necessary protocols to communicate with the Web server, retrieve the Web page and deliver it to the browser for display.

Many new cellular phones have touch screens.

Many of the newer models of cellular phones and mobile devices, such as iPhones and Android-model cellular phones and devices like the iPad or Kindle, have touch screens, allowing uses to simply touch the screen to interact with it. However, these touch screens are relatively sensitive and can be shattered or cracked in a number of ways. When this occurs, it can be very expensive to replace the touch screen so it is important to know keep this damage from occurring.

Impact

Dropping, throwing or sitting on the touch screen of a phone or mobile device can cause it to crack or shatter, rendering it useless or at least difficult to use. The earlier models of touch screen phones were particularly prone to this, as dropping them only a small distance could cause the screens to spider-web with cracks. While the newer models of these phones have stronger pieces of touch-screen glass, it is important to buy cases for the phones to ensure as much protection as possible from this type of damage.

Pressure

A touch-screen phone in your pocket being pressed hard against something, such as a wall, a desk or a car door can cause it to crack. Having the phone in your pocket when you slip and fall on it can also cause it to break if it does not have a case. Having the phone in your backpack which is stepped on or thrown hard onto the floor can also cause it to break, as can keeping it in a checked bag on an airplane, which may have a number of other heavy bags piled on top of it. This is another reason buying a case for the phone is a good idea, as well as not putting it in situations where it will encounter large amounts of intense pressure.

Extreme Heat and Cold

Extreme heat and cold temperatures can cause the phone itself to contract and expand, possibly causing the touchscreen to crack and malfunction. While this is a rare scenario, as few people go from extreme heat to extreme cold with their touch-screen cell phones, it can happen in certain circumstances, such as someone who works in a laboratory walking out of a freezer into a heated room, or someone who is outside in subzero temperatures walking into a warm building.

The HP Officejet 6500 is an all-in-one inkjet printer that is capable of scanning, copying and faxing documents. The device can print documents at a resolution up to 4800 x 1200 dots per inch. In addition, the HP Officejet 6500 features a built-in memory card reader, which enables you to print photos directly from your digital camera's memory card. Unfortunately, over time you may encounter problems using your HP Officejet 6500. Luckily, most of these problems can be fixed using a variety of troubleshooting techniques.

Instructions

Clean Printer Sensor

1. Clean your HP Officejet 6500's print sensor if your printer does not recognize the ink cartridges inside the device. Press the "Power" button on the front control panel of the printer to power the device on. Open the printer's lid, and wait for the ink cartridges to slide to the middle of the printer and lock into place.

2. Locate the square printer sensor to the left of your ink cartridges, and wipe it clean using a microfiber cloth.

3. Close your HP Officejet 6500's printer lid, and wait for the cartridges to slide back into their proper location. Print a test document to ensure that the ink cartridges are now properly recognized by the printer.

Align Print Heads

4. Align your HP Officejet 6500's print heads if your printed documents are off-center. Load unused paper into the printer's paper tray, and press the "Setup" button to access your HP Officejet 6500's main menu.

5. Scroll through the various options using the directional keys on the front of the printer, and select the "Tools" tab. Click on the "Align Printer" tab to begin the alignment process.

6. Wait as your HP Officejet 6500 prints a special piece of paper that will align the print heads. Discard of the paper once the process is completed, and print a test document to ensure that your documents are now properly aligned.

Clear Paper Jam

7. Remove all paper from your HP Officejet 6500's output tray if you experience a paper jam. Press and hold the "Power" button on your printer's front control panel to power the device off.

8. Locate the duplexer on the rear of your HP Officejet 6500, and press the release tab to remove it. Check to see if there is any dislodged paper within the duplexer. Gently pull on any trapped paper, and remove it from the printer. Discard the paper, and snap the duplexer back into place.

9. Reinsert paper back into the HP Officejet 6500's paper trays, and power the device back on. Print a test document to ensure that you have completely removed the paper jam and that the device is now functioning properly.
