Use A Modem To Make Phone Calls

VoIP service allows you to make phone calls using your modem.


VoIP (Voiceover Internet Protocol) phones allow you the ability to connect to your modem and make phone calls. In order to do this, you must purchase an adapter that will connect your modem to your phone line and create a connection to VoIP phone service. There are several companies that offer service using adapters including Vonage, Ooma, and MagicJack.


Instructions


Vonage


1. Register for a Vonage account on the Vonage web page. The modem adapter will be shipped to the address provided in the account set up.


2. Unplug the power from your phone's modem once your Vonage adapter arrives.


3. Disconnect your yellow Ethernet cable from your modem or router and connect it to the yellow box of your Vonage adapter.


4. Connect the blue Ethernet cable provided with your Vonage adapter to the blue box on the back of your Vonage adapter and to the blue box on your modem.


5. Plug the power supply back into your modem and allow your modem to power up.


6. Plug your Vonage adapter into a power source and allow the adapter to power on.


7. Connect your phone to "Port 1" on your Vonage adapter. "Port 1" is the green port on the back of your adapter. You should have a dial tone when you pick up your phone.


magicJack


8. Open the magicJack web page and create an account. Your adapter will be mailed to the address provided in the account setup.


9. Plug your home phone into your magicJack.


10. Plug your magicJack into an open USB slot on your computer. The software for your device will install automatically. Follow the instructions fully to ensure your adapter software installs correctly. After the installation is complete you will be able to make calls from your phone.


Ooma


11. Open and create an account on the "Ooma" web page. Your adapter will be shipped to the address provided during the account setup.


12. Unplug the power from your modem and router.


13. Unplug the yellow Ethernet cable from your modem and plug it into the box marked "Home Network" on the back of your Ooma adapter and to your router.


14. Plug the blue Ethernet cable to the box marked "To Internet" on your Ooma adapter and into your "Ethernet" port on your modem.


15. Plug your telephone into the "Phone" box on the back of the adapter using the phone cord provided.


16. Plug the AC adapter into the Ooma adapter and plug into a power source. Plug in your modem and router and turn the power "On" on both devices. The Ooma adapter will take five to 10 minutes to completely power on. Once the "Ooma" symbol is blue, your phone will be ready to make calls.
