Uniden's GPS501 is a three-in-one GPS device. It is a combination car navigation system and road safety warning system with voice assistance. The Uniden GPS501 may be upgraded in several ways. You can update the device's camera, city and POI data. You can also update its firmware. "Firmware" is the software that operates the device's hardware. Updating the firmware can improve the functionality of the GPS501, and it may also give you access to new features.
Instructions
1. Go to the "GPS501 Updater Software Download" Web page on the Uniden website (see the link in the Resources). Click the "Download Update" link and save the file to a directory on the computer's hard drive.
2. Close the Web browser and navigate to the location where you just save the GPS501 Updater software file. The file you downloaded is likely in zipped format.
3. Right-click on the GPS501 updater software file to reveal the shortcut menu. Select "Extract All" from the menu to launch the Extraction Wizard. Follow the wizard's prompts to extract the zipped file.
4. Launch the "GPS501UpdaterInstaller.msi" file. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the GPS501 Updater software.
5. Press and hold the "Cancel / Power" on the GPS501 to turn it on.
6. Connect one end of the USB cable (which should have been included with the GPS501 when you purchased it) into the GPS501's USB port. Plug the other end of the cable into one of the computer's available USB ports. The computer will detect "New USB Hardware Found."
7. Follow the on-screen prompts to point to the USB driver data included in the extracted GPS501 Updater Software folder.
8. Double-click the GPS501 Updater software icon on the computer's desktop to launch the GPS501 Updater application.
9. Click "Yes" at the first prompt that asks "Do you connect to the Web Server?" The GPS501 Updater software will check the current version of firmware, camera, city and POI data installed on the GPS501, and compare it against the latest data available. If a more recent version of data is available, you'll be given the option to upgrade the GPS501.
10. Click "Execute" to upgrade the GPS501.
