The United States plays host to more than 55 dental schools accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation, a branch of the American Dental Association. Neither organization, nor "U.S. News & World Report," which frequently rates schools and universities, ranks dental colleges in any particular order.
University of Maryland Dental School
Derived from the Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, the world's first dental school, the University of Maryland Dental School offers five major programs, including dental hygiene and doctor of dental surgery programs. The school also features 17 areas of study, such as the orthodontic, the periodontic and the oral-maxillofacial surgery departments. The dental school offers various research programs, including the University of Maryland's Organized Research Center on Persistent Pain, Oral Health Services Research projects and the Core Imaging Facility, which conducts research on scientific equipment.

University of Michigan School of Dentistry
The University of Michigan School of Dentistry, founded in 1875, offers 15 fields of study, including pediatric dentistry, endodontics and restorative dentistry. The diverse student body features a variety of student groups, such as the Hispanic Dental Association, Dental LGBTA and the Muslim Student Dental Association. Students can participate in community outreach programs and international mission trips, both of which aim to provide dental care to the underprivileged. The school also offers preprofessional enrichment programs with an emphasis on science studies.

Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC
Established in 1897, the Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC features four different programs: bachelor's, doctoral dental, graduate and post-graduate/advanced certificate programs. The university itself offers multiple scholarships, including more than $1 million in financial aid from the USC Alumni Association. Students can take advantage of the school's mentor programs, which partner third- and fourth-year students with alumni from the School of Dentistry. The speaker's series also brings various professionals to campus on a monthly basis during which time they share their real-world experiences in the field of dentistry.
