MultiMediaCards (MMCs) are used in a wide variety of devices, from cellular phones to cameras to portable music players. Regardless of the application the card is put toward, MMC card users often find that they've run out of storage space or that their card has become unreadable due to corruption. In both cases, formatting often solves the issue. Bear in mind that formatting results in deletion of all data on the card.
Instructions
Formatting on a Windows PC
1. Attach your MMC reader to your PC. Usually the MMC card reader is connected using a USB cable. You can obtain MMC card readers from online retailers for as little as a few dollars (see Resources section).
2. Click your desktop's "Start" menu and then click "Computer." The "Computer" window displays all the storage devices currently connected to your computer, such as your hard drive.
3. Insert your MMC card into the card reader. The "Computer" window will now display the MMC card among the other devices listed. Unless you changed the name of your MMC card, Windows will assign it the name "Removable Disk."
4. Double-click on the "Removable Disk" icon. Ensure that this is the disk you'd like to format by looking at the contents. When you're sure, click the back arrow to return to the "Computer" window.
5. Right-click on the "Removable Disk" icon that corresponds with your MMC card. Select "Format" in the menu that appears. Click "Start" in the format window. A message will appear when formatting is complete. The MMC card will have been wiped clean and rendered ready for use.
Formatting on a Mac
6. Attach your MMC reader to your Mac and insert the MMC card. Usually the MMC card reader is connected using a USB cable. You can obtain MMC card readers from online retailers for as little as a few dollars (see Resources section).
7. Click on the "Spotlight" search (the magnifying glass icon in the top-right corner of the screen). Type "Disk Utility" and click on the "Top Hit."
8. In the left-hand pane of the Disk Utility window, click on your MMC card. Do not select anything with a metallic gray icon, as that icon represents a hard drive instead of your MMC card. The MMC card icon is white.
9. Click on the "Erase" tab at the top of the right-hand pane in the Disk Utility window. In the "Volume Format" drop-down menu, select "FAT." This is the most commonly used format, especially for mobile devices.
10. Click "Erase" in the bottom-right corner of the Disk Utility window. Disk Utility will notify you when the MMC card has been formatted and is ready for use.
