Compare Bluetooth & Handsfree Headsets

Handsfree headsets come in many form factors.

There are several factors to consider when buying a headset for your cell phone. You'll have to consider the form factor, audio quality and connectivity of your headset. Most headsets are built to suit relatively specific uses, so you should have a good idea how you plan to use your headset.

Compare Bluetooth and Handsfree Headsets

1. Consider the form factor that is best suited to your application. If you will be taking lots of calls at your desk for a business, wired headphones with an attached boom mic will ensure that you and your caller can hear everything clearly. If you move around throughout the day and need a headset in place to handle quick calls, a smaller, less intrusive wireless headset is probably the best choice.

2. Choose between wired and wireless headsets. Wireless headsets are usually small and have integrated microphones, but audio quality can suffer. Getting entangled in a wired earpiece can be frustrating, but properly attaching such an earpiece to your clothes can mitigate the problem. Remember that, in general, wired headsets are less expensive and have better audio quality than their wireless counterparts.

3. Decide between stereo and mono. Headsets can be either stereo---meaning there are two separate incoming audio streams for left and right ear---or mono---meaning there is only a single incoming stream. If you will use your headset for quick phone calls, mono will almost always suffice. If you will be listening to music, though, the better audio quality of a stereo headset will be well worth the additional price.

4. Select the features you need. Many headsets have noise-canceling microphones so that your caller will be able to hear you even if you're in a loud environment. Some Bluetooth headsets allow you to be simultaneously connected to two different hosts, such as a cell phone and a music player. The device will normally be playing music, but will automatically switch to your cell phone whenever you receive a call. Again, knowing the application you're using the headset for is key.

5. Narrow down your options based on your needs. Search online and in electronics stores based on the features you need, and soon you will have found the perfect headset.
