Cell phones
can fit into two types: conventional and smart phone.
The easiest way to differentiate between types of cell phones is by their features. Relying on that method there are two main types of cell phones: conventional and smart phones. As their name suggests, conventional cell phones have been around longer, and offer basic services and feature. Smart phones can usually do everything a conventional phone can do and more.
Conventional Phones
A conventional cell phone is designed to first of all be a phone. The keypad and layout of the phone is usually similar to that of a traditional phone. The software inside a conventional cell phone is limited, but functional. Most include address books, calendars, alarm clocks and other basic tools for productivity. These cell phones may have games, Internet access and other added features, but they are not the phone's primary purpose.
Smart Phones
A smart phone is basically a miniature computer. While they are still primarily used for phone calls and texting, they have a multitude of features that extend far beyond that. A smart phone can connect to the Internet, either through a cell phone network or through any available wi-fi signal, and can be used to browse the web, check email and much more. Games are typically more advanced on smart phones, as are applications (or apps) that allow users to check the whether, get directions, go shopping and much more.
Phone subtypes
Within those two main phone types there are many sub-types of phone. There are media player phones that can store and playback music and video; phones with built-in cameras that can take pictures and record video, and phones with complete QWERTY-style keyboards to allow for easier web browsing and texting. There are also touch screen phones that forgo much of the traditional physical interface for a virtual one on a display screen. Some phones combine physical interfaces with touch screens, allowing users to browse the features on their phone via the touch screen, but still giving them the ability to type and text using a full-featured traditional keyboard.
Conventional vs Smart phone
All cell phone types and subtypes have their own benefits and weaknesses. A conventional cell phone with no added features may be enough for those who just use their cell phones to make phone calls. But a smart phone with a built-in media player, wi-fi and video camera might be desired by others. Personal preference, finances, and other factors all come in to play when choosing a type of cell phone.
