The 5310 XpressMusic and the BlackBerry 8220 are cellular smartphones developed by Nokia and Research in Motion respectively. Nokia released the 5310 in 2007. Research in Motion released the BlackBerry 8220 in 2008. The phones are similar in terms of size, network compatibility and included multimedia features. They differ primarily in terms of battery life, messaging features and integrated storage space.
Size and Battery
The BlackBerry 8220 is designed around the flip form factor while the Nokia 5310 is a candybar phone. With its flip top closed, the 8220 measures 4.0 inches tall, 2.0 inches wide and 0.7 inches thick at its thickest point. It weighs 3.6 oz. before optional upgrades and accessories. The Nokia 5310 is thinner and lighter, measuring 4.1 inches tall, 1.8 inches wide and 0.4 inches thick at its thickest point. It weighs 2.5 oz. before optional upgrades and accessories. An 860-mAh lithium-ion battery provides the Nokia 5310 with up to 5.5 hours of talk time. A 900-mAh lithium-ion battery provides the BlackBerry 8220 with up to four hours of talk time.
Display and Camera
The Nokia 5310 features one 2.0-inch color TFT LCD display screen with a resolution of 320 by 240 pixels. The BlackBerry 8220 features two display screens. A 128-by-160-pixel LCD is on the front of the phone's flip top and a 240-by-320-pixel LCD is on the underside of the flip top. Both phones feature integrated 2.0-megapixel rear-facing digital cameras that take photos at resolutions up to 1,600 by 1,200 pixels. Both cameras have video-recording functionality. Only the BlackBerry 8220 has a built-in LED flash.
Cellular and Messaging
Both the Nokia 5310 and the BlackBerry 8220 run on GSM cellular networks at 850, 900, 1,800 and 1,900MHz. When transferring data, the 8220 runs on Class 10 GPRS and EDGE networks at up to 236.8Kbps. The 5310 runs on slower Class 32 GPRS and EDGE networks at up to 177Kbps. Both phones have Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP support. Neither phone is compatible with 3G technology. Only the 8220 has built-in Wi-Fi support.

The BlackBerry 8220 has 75MB of internal storage space versus 30MB for the Nokia 5310. Both phones feature integrated microSD memory card slots compatible with cards up to 8GB in size. Both phones feature built-in media players compatible with audio and video files. The Nokia 5310 is available in black, red, pink and blue, while the BlackBerry 8220 is only available in black. Both phones connect to a computer via a miniature USB connection.
