What Are Phone Themes

Applying different themes can make cellphone usage a lot more fun.

Phone themes are applications that can be installed to change the background image or appearance of the phone's graphical interface, including images, icons and network indicators. Most cellphones come with a set of default themes, but you can install additional ones as well. Additionally, you can make your own, if you want a personalized theme. Most cellphones, including Blackberry, LG, Samsung, Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson, allow themes.

Graphical Interface

Phone themes modify the elements of the phone's graphic user interface. These elements can include highlights, background images, menu images, screensavers, text, color schemes, icons, clock, navigation bar, scroll bars and signal indicators. Background image of a theme is displayed on all the screens of the interface. The graphical interfaces make the themes attractive and eye-catching.

Audio Inclusions

Many phone themes have integrated ringtones in them for incoming calls and messages. For instance, the theme of a Twilight movie can have its song as a ringtone for incoming calls or a dialogue for message ringtone. When the phone theme is changed, ringtones are changed accordingly. The ringtones add dramatic and creative features to the phone themes. However, they may not necessarily be present in every theme.

Where to find them?

If you find your phone's default themes dull and mundane, you can download your favorite ones off the Internet. Many websites are available that let you download the phone themes for free via different methods. The phone themes are available for all the mobile-phone models of the companies, which support theme-changing. These websites divide the themes into different categories, such as nature, celebrities, abstract, love, music, sport, technology, comedy, designs, cartoons, anime, animals, signs and people. Some of these websites are Zedge, Gallery Mobile 9, Cellmind and On Smartphone.

Make Your Own

If you want absolute customization, consider making your own theme. There are some websites that take orders to create a customized theme where you provide the pictures, illustrations or logos, mobile phone model and theme preferences. You can install specialty programs, such as Sony Ericsson Theme Maker or Nokia's Carbide, on your computer and make your own theme. Such tools are easy to use and are intended for average users with little experience. All you need to have is an idea, color preferences and images saved on your computer that you will use for making the theme.
