In 2009, the annual median salary for dentists was $156,850, according to BLS.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for dentists is expected to increase 16 percent from 2008 to 2018 because of the growing demand of dental services. Before working as dentists, individuals must pursue four years of dental school after obtaining a bachelor's degree. There are dental school programs around the country.
Marquette University School of Dentistry
Marquette University School of Dentistry, a Jesuit school and the only dental school in Wisconsin, provides students with a learning environment which is patient centered. This means students attend fewer traditional lecture courses and spend more time working with patients. Dental students participate in MUSD outreach programs in rural and urban areas. During students' first year, they participate in rounds with faculty once a week. Each year, the dental school allows 80 new students---half of the slots are for Wisconsin residents. Although dental school is four years, the MUSD does have a seven year dental program for students who want to enter dental school straight out of high school.
