A New Printer

Installing a new printer has many steps. You must connect it to your computer correctly before you can set it up and start using it. The software provided with your printer often simplifies the installation process. With this software and these step-by-step directions, you can install your printer onto your Windows XP computer and start using it.


Instructions


Add a New Printer


1. Unpack and connect your new printer to your computer using the product instructions.


2. Click "start" on the taskbar, click "control panel" on the start menu, then click the "printers and other hardware" link in the windows category view.


3. Click the "add a printer" link, which will start the add printer wizard. Click "next" or "enter" to view the printer connection dialog box.


4. Select the "local printer" button and the "automatically detect and install my plug and play printer" box below that button, then click "next." The "select a printer port" dialog box will appear.


5. Click "install printer manually." Click the port for your printer in the "use the following port" drop-down box, and click "next."


6. The "install printer software" dialog box will appear. Click your model and manufacturer.


7. Insert the printer software into your drive and click the "have disk" button, then click the corresponding drive in the copy manufacturer's files drop-down list. Click "OK."


8. Click "next" and the "name your printer" dialog box will appear. You may choose to name your printer here.


9. "Do you want your Windows-based programs to use this printer as the default printer?" will appear. Select "yes" or "no," according to your preferences.


10. Click "next" and the "printer sharing" dialog box will appear. Click "share" or "do not share," according to your preferences. The "Would you like to print a test page?" dialog box should appear next. Click "yes."


11. Click "next" and the "add printer wizard" dialog box will appear. You can review your printer settings and then press "enter" to finish the installation.
