Connect A Mac To The Internet Using A Blackberry As A Modem

Use your BlackBerry to connect your computer to the Internet.

A 2010 Nielsen report predicts that by 2011, smartphones will outnumber more basic feature phones in the U.S. Smartphones such as the BlackBerry appeal to consumers because of their portability, but the small screen and keyboard normally limit Internet use to browsing websites and checking email. It is possible to tap into the wireless capability of your BlackBerry to use it as a modem for a Mac computer so you can enjoy increased versatility.

Instructions

1. Save the "Custom Blackberry 8300 modem script" in the directory called "Modem Scripts" on your computer. This can be found in the "Library" folder on your Hard Disk.

2. Enable Bluetooth on your BlackBerry. Next go to "Bluetooth Options," click the "Menu" key, choose "Options" and set the "Discoverable" option to "Yes."

3. Open the "Bluetooth" configuration panel on your Mac to enable Bluetooth and make it "Discoverable." You will be able to find this configuration panel under "System Preferences."

4. Click the "Devices" tab in "System Preferences," then click "Set Up New Device..." and select "Continue."

5. Click "Any Device" on the "Select Device" page, then hit "Continue." You will be given a passkey. Enter this at the "Enter Numeric Passkey," which now should be visible on the BlackBerry screen. If the connection is successful, you will see the message "Pairing is complete."

6. Click "Yes" at the prompt "Accept connection request from Mac?"

7. Open the "Devices" subpanel on your Mac, which you will find in the Bluetooth page of your System Preferences. Select your BlackBerry model from the list of devices then click "Configure."

8. Click the boxes to select "Access the Internet with your phone's data connection" and "Use a direct, higher speed connection to reach your Internet Service Provider (GPRS, 1xRTT)" then click "Continue."

9. Leave the user name and password fields blank on the next screen that appears but enter "*99***1#" at the "GPRS CID String" prompt. In the drop-down menu entitled "Modem Script," select "BlackBerry 8300." In the same dialog box, choose "Show Modem status in the menu bar," then click "Continue."

10. Click "Quit" to close the confirmation screen that announces that your connection is active.

11. Open "Internet Connect" on your Mac and click the "Bluetooth" tab. When prompted enter the following:

"Telephone" = wap.voicestream.com (T-Mobile) or wap.cingular (Cingular/AT&T)
