Jailbreak an Apple 4, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or Apple iPad using Safari
On July 26, 2010, the Library of Congress declared an exception to the 1998 Digital Millennium Copyright Act that states it is now perfectly legal for Americans to "jailbreak" and unlock their iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad devices. Jailbreaking allows users to run software applications and make device modifications without the need for Apple's approval. No longer fearing any legal prosecution, the programming teams responsible for the original software used to jailbreak iPhone devices released a new jailbreak method.
Instructions
Backup
1. Connect the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad device that will be jailbroken to a Windows or Mac computer using a Dock Connector to USB cable.
2. Open the iTunes software. If necessary, the iTunes software can be downloaded for free from the Apple website (see Resources).
3. Right-click on the device that will be jailbroken in the left-hand column from within the iTunes software. Connected iPhones, iPod Touch and iPad devices will appear under the "devices" section in the left-hand column.
4. Select "Back Up" from the sub-menu that appears. The device will begin to create a backup of all its data, which will be stored in iTunes on the computer or Mac being used. Depending on the memory capacity of the device, the process of creating a backup may take as long as an hour or more.
5. Right-click on the device in the left-hand column and select "Eject". After the device has been ejected, the sync cable can be unplugged from the device.
Jailbreak
6. Open the Safari web browser on the device that will be jailbroken.
7. Navigate to a site that hosts the JailBreakMe 2.0 software (see Resources) using the Safari browser on the device.
8. Slide the bar on the bottom of the web page that says "slide to jailbreak" from left to right.
9. Wait until the jailbreak is completed and a dialog box appears that confirms a successful jailbreak.
10. Reboot the device after the jailbreak completes. Hold down the sleep button for several seconds, and a slider bar will appear with the text "slide to power off". Swipe the red arrow from left to right to turn off the device.
11. Press the sleep button to turn the device back on.
Restore
12. Reconnect the iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad device to the computer running iTunes where the backup is saved.
13. Open the iTunes software if it is not already open.
14. Right-click on the device in the left-hand column from within the iTunes software.
15. Select "Restore from Backup" from the sub-menu that appears.
16. Select the most recent backup from the list of all backups in the following dialog window than click the "Restore" button. Wait while the device is restored with the backup data.
17.Right-click on the device in the left-hand column and select "Eject." After the device has been ejected, the sync cable can be unplugged from the device.
