Formatting your Nokia E71 cell phone is a drastic step. It is typically the last attempt to restore a non-working phone, as it deletes all of your stored information, including media, and restores all settings to the phone's factory state. A damaged firmware update can cause the phone to behave erratically, including locking up while loading an application or suddenly restarting during use. Once formatted, you can transfer your contacts back to the phone via a memory card in order to restore your phone's contact list.
Instructions
1. Press "Menu" on the Nokia phone and press the scroll key on the phone's keypad to highlight "Tools."
2. Press the "Select" key located in the top-right corner above the "Mail" key on the phone's keypad, and scroll down to highlight "Settings."
3. Press "Select" and scroll down to "Factory Settings." Press "Select" to access the phone's factory restore tool.
4. Scroll up to highlight "Yes" and press "Select."
5. Push the release buttons on the side of the phone and lift up the back cover.
6. Insert the memory card face down into the memory card slot on the left side of the phone. Push the memory card into the slot until it clicks into place.
7. Place the back cover onto the phone and press until it clicks into its slot. Your contacts and other types of media are available on your phone once you insert the memory card into the phone.
