Will a Tracfone Give Out My Number?
Tracfone is a nationwide prepaid cell phone company located in the United States. With over 10 million active users, Tracfone is one of the largest prepaid carriers currently operating in North America. Because the company operates on a prepaid structure, many customers often have questions about caller ID, and how (or if) their phone number displays when they make phone calls from their non-contract phones.
How Tracfone Works
Customers can purchase Tracfone at various retailers throughout the country, including superstores such as Walmart. Once a phone is purchased, the customer activates a phone by following the included directions that come with the phone. Once a phone number is given and minutes are loaded onto the Tracfone, it's ready for use.
Placing Calls
Users place calls in the same manner as a contract phone. Users dial a number and press the "send" key (typically a green key on the phone's keypad). When dialing long distance numbers, the "1" doesn't need to be used, however using the "1" in front of the area code will not disrupt the call.
Caller ID
When a call is placed, the user's Tracfone number is transmitted along with their call, therefore their number will display on the recipient's caller ID.
Blocking Your Tracfone Number When Placing Calls
Tracfone uses the *67 command to block a caller's name and number from showing up on the caller ID of the person being called. Simply dial *67 followed by the phone number you want to call and press the send key on your phone, and your name and number will not be displayed.
Cost of *67
According to Tracfone customer service, the *67 command does not come with any additional charges. They also note that they cannot put a permanent block on your phone number showing up on people's caller IDs, so you must use *67 every time you want to block your number.
