Dentistry can open a lot of doors. Career options include general dentistry, specialty dentistry, dental hygienist and dental assistant. Of course the salary range for each position is different but according to, "2002 Survey of New Dentist Financial Issues", new full time dentists earned approximately $109,000 per year.


University of Michigan School of Dentistry


University of Michigan School of Dentistry offers several programs to choose from. The DDS, or Doctor of Dental Surgery, is a four year program that trains students to become general dentists or a student can go on to further his education to become a specialty dentist of his choice. Also available is the ITDP, or Internationally Trained Dentist Program, which allows students of a foreign dentistry school to become a DDS in the United States. The dental hygienist program offers an entry level position, with the degree being that of a Bachelor's (BS DH) upon graduation. There are also 12 programs available to educate students in other areas such as dental research, dental education and clinical practice.

Lake Michigan College


Lake Michigan College offers a complete course in dental assisting. Upon graduation, students can earn a Certificate in Dental Assisting, CDA. There are strict requirements prior to entering the program such as successfully completing recommended classes. The length of time to complete the program is up to the student, depending on how many credit hours he wishes to complete in a certain amount of time. A student may earn up to 33.5 credits to fulfill the CDA program.


A dental hygienist program is also available, partnered with the Kalamazoo Valley Community College program. Students need to earn an Associate of Applied Science from Kalamazoo Valley Community College to successfully graduate from the dental hygienist program. The dental hygienist program takes approximately three years to complete, spending the last two years at Kalamazoo. Lake Michigan College also offers a pre-dentistry transfer program featuring 60 semester hours; most dental schools prefer individuals who have a bachelor's degree.

University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry


University of Detroit Mercy has several programs available including Endodontics, Orthodontics, Periodontics, Advanced Education in General Dentistry and dental hygienist. The Endodontics program is a 24-month postdoctoral program to practice in the field of Endodontics. The Orthodontic program is a full two calendar year program, with no summer break. The program is very hands-on, during the course of the school year, students will spend one half of each day treating patients under the supervision of his instructor. The program for Periodontics is a comprehensive 35-month program going to school full time. Upon graduation, a student may earn a Certificate in Periodontics as well as a Master of Science.


The dental hygienist program is a one and a half year program, affording students the opportunity to become Registered Dental Hygienist, RDA. Admission for the dental hygienist program is very competitive and factors including previous GPA's are used to determine who gets accepted.
