A career in dentistry can be very rewarding. The Canadian Dental Association states that "today's dentists do more than drill and fill patients' teeth; they perform a wide variety of procedures and functions." These can range from prevention and oral health education to restoration procedures and surgery. According to the Association, dentistry also involves an artistic element and is a detailed craft that involves precise handwork.
There are 10 accredited dental programs in Canada. Applicants should complete two to four years of undergraduate study before applying to dental school. All Canadian dental schools require the submission of Dental Aptitude Test (DAT) scores.You will attend dental school for at least 4 years, five years if you wish to specialize in a specific area of dentistry, such as orthodontics.
British Columbia
The University of British Columbia, located in Vancouver, offers dental specialty programs in general dentistry, oral medicine and oral pathology, periodontics and endodontics. Three years of undergraduate study and a grade point average of 70 percent are minimum entry requirements at UBC and most other Canadian dental programs.

Alberta
The University of Alberta offers dental programs in general dentistry as well as orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Located in Edmonton, the University of Alberta offers dental students the opportunity of foreign exchange with Dresden, Germany during their course of study.

Manitoba
The University of Manitoba, located in Winnipeg, offers general dentistry as well as three specialized programs: oral & maxillofacial surgery, periodontics and orthodontics, and dentofacial orthopedics. The University of Manitoba has a high research profile and has set itself the goal to become one of the top five dental schools in North America.

Ontario
Two universities in Ontario offer accredited dentistry programs. The University of Western Ontario in London offers general dentistry, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, as well as a qualifying program. As of 2011, completion of a 4-year undergraduate program will be required for admission.
Considered one of the top-ranked dental schools in North America, the University of Toronto offers the most comprehensive programs in all of Canada. The specialized programs offered include general dentistry, dental public health, oral and maxillofacial surgery, periodontics, endodontics, oral medicine and oral pathology, oral and maxillofacial radiology, orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics, pediatric dentistry and prosthodontics.

Quebec
Three universities in the province of Quebec are accredited dental program providers: Laval University, McGill University and the University of Montreal. Laval University, located in Quebec City, offers programs in general dentistry, periodontics and oral and maxillofacial surgery. Both Laval University and the University of Montreal are French-language institutions. The University of Montreal offers dental specialty programs in general dentistry, pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, dentofacial orthopedics and prosthodontics. Two programs, general dentistry and oral and maxillofacial surgery, are offered by McGill University in Montreal. McGill is ranked as one of the top ten dental schools in North America.
