If you purchased your Motorola Razr from T-Mobile, your Razr's SIM card is locked to the T-Mobile network. Changing your mobile provider requires a SIM card unlock code, which you can request from T-Mobile. Postpaid customers can acquire a SIM unlock code if they have had at least 40 days of active service with T-Mobile. Prepaid customers can receive an unlock code if they have had at least 60 days of active service, a prepaid account balance of $10 or refilled their prepaid balance within the previous 30 days. If T-Mobile does not have an unlock code and cannot acquire a code from the manufacturer, you will have to purchase a code online.
Instructions
1. Input *#06# and write down the IMEI number of your Motorola Razr. You will need this number when requesting a SIM code from your carrier. You must also provide the IMEI number when purchasing a SIM card online. The white label underneath the battery also contains the IMEI number.
2. Contact T-Mobile for an unlock code, if you are a past or current customer. Otherwise purchase an unlock code from an online vendor such as Unlocking.com or GSM Liberty. (See Resources) Research sites that offer free unlock codes. Some do not guarantee the codes and if something happens with your phone they offer no support. When choosing an online vendor make sure there is a money-back guarantee.
3. Turn off your Motorola Razr. Detach the back cover of your phone and remove the battery. Slide the SIM card from the SIM card holder located in the battery compartment.
4. Insert a SIM card from another network into the SIM card slot with the gold tabs facing downward. Replace the battery and back cover of the Razr. Do not use the T-Mobile SIM card.
5. Turn on the Razr and input the unlock code when "Enter Special Code" appears on your phone.
