If you're shopping for viable mobile phones that don't come with a hefty price tag, consider some of the older models that are still on the market, such as the Nokia N70 and N72 smartphones. While these phones may appear different, a closer look will prove that they are more alike than different.
Memory
The Nokia N70, which comes with 22 megabytes of included memory, and Nokia N72, which features 20MB, aren't known for their internal memory offerings, but they do support MultiMediaCard cards for expanded memory capability. Both phones, with added memory, support a large number of contacts with multiple phone number entries and photo and ring tone IDs. You can maximize the phone's memory by periodically checking the phone's content for unwanted or unused files and deleting them.
Physical Features
The Nokia N70, released in 2005, measures 4.3 inches long, 2.1 inches wide and 0.9 inches deep, while the N72, released in 2006, is identically long and wide, but is only 0.7 inches deep. At 4.4 oz., the phones are also identical in weight. Both phones come with a 2.1-inch thin-film transistor screen that displays 256,000 colors at 176 by 208 pixels of resolution. Each model is a candy bar-style phone, which means it does not have any slide-out or flip components. Both phones feature a numeric keypad that's situated directly below the display screen.
Internal Features and Networking
Built on the Symbian 8.1a operating system, the Nokia N70 uses a 220-megahertz ARM926EJ-S processor and a Texas Instruments OMAP 1710 chipset. The Nokia N72 uses the same speed and type of process and chipset, but is built on the Symbian 8.1 operating system. Both phones access the 2G wireless network using GSM technology on the 900, 1,800 and 1,900 frequency bands, but only the N70 is capable of linking to the 3G network, which it does using UMTS technology on the 2,100 frequency. Each device produces data transfer speeds with the 2G network at up to 32 to 48 kilobits per second using GPRS technology and at up to 236 Kbps using EDGE technology. The N70's 3G data transfer rates run at up to 384 Kbps. Neither phone is equipped with Wi-Fi capability.
Battery Life
Both the N70 and N72 are powered by a standard lithium-ion battery that gives the phones different amounts of battery life. The N70 gets up to 3.5 hours of talk time and up to 264 hours, or 11 days, of standby time, while the N72 gets up to 3.6 hours of talk time and up to 260 hours, or 10.8 days, of standby time. You can extend the battery lives of these phones by minimizing the display screen's brightness level and disconnecting from the 3G network when not in use.
