Convert a Phone to VoIP
Converting a telephone to VoIP (Voice-over Internet Protocol) requires a subscription service with an Internet telephone service provider and a VoIP receiver for placing and accepting phone calls. Vonage, Skype and ITP are well-known VoIP service providers. The service uses a customer's Internet connection instead of a standard landline for telephone communications. Many of the features available with traditional telephone service plans are also available with VoIP. Converting the phone takes only a few minutes.
Instructions
1. Unplug the phone line from the telephone jack in the wall by pressing the plastic tab on the plug and pulling straight out.
2. Connect the plug on the end of the phone line to the jack on the back of the VoIP receiver. It connects the same as a wall jack.
3. Connect the VoIP receiver to the Internet service in the building, such as a coaxial cable, satellite service or fiber optic line. The VoIP receiver connects to the main modem with a standard Ethernet cable that should come with the VoIP equipment when it is shipped. The Ethernet cable plugs into the line IN jack on the VoIP receiver and a free Ethernet port on the modem.
4. Plug the DC power adapter into the jack on the VoIP receiver and connect to a wall outlet.
5. Turn on the receiver and wait for the device to establish a connection with the modem. Complete the setup by pressing the "Enter" or "Next" button on the VoIP receiver when prompted by the message screen on the top of the device.
