Use Verizon Wireless To Provide Internet

Use Verizon Wireless to Provide Internet

Verizon Wireless offers two ways to connect your laptop or desktop computer to the Internet. The first is by connecting to your laptop or desktop computer the data connection going to your cell phone; this is called "tethering" or "dial-up networking (DUN)." The second is with a specialized device, called the MiFi, that uses the Verizon 3G data connection for Internet bandwidth, and provides it as a mobile wireless hotspot to any computer within wireless range.

Instructions

1. Check your plan to ensure you are activated for mobile access. Verizon charges extra for the ability to tether your computer to your cell phone. Prices vary based on what kind of phone you have, and what kind of monthly service plan you subscribe to for that phone. As of January 2010, these prices range from $15 to $50 per month, depending upon your current plan, for up to five gigabytes of data monthly.

2. Decide whether to use Bluetooth or USB networking. Bluetooth is easier to use because it does not require a cable between the cell phone and the computer, but it is slower than USB, and will drain your phone's battery faster.

3. Download the VZAccess Manager software from Verizon's web site. You will be prompted to fill out a form requesting information about your phone and plan, and will be directed to the correct software to use for Windows or Macintosh. (If your cell phone is incompatible with tethering, it will tell you that as well.)

4. If you prefer, you can use Windows' or Mac OS X's built-in dial-up networking control panels. (Macintosh OS only supports Bluetooth DUN, not USB.) Set up a new dial-up networking connection in the Windows control panel or Macintosh Network system preferences, with phone number: #777, username: [your phone number]@vzw3g.com, and password: vzw.

5. Turn on DUN networking in your cell phone. In Windows Mobile 5, tap Start > Accessories > Modem-link > Activate > On. In In Windows Mobile 6, tap Internet Sharing in the main menu. For other phones, contact Verizon technical support or consult your manual for assistance.

6. If you are using a Verizon MiFi, you do not need to activate tethering on your computer or the MiFi. Turning on the MiFi will create a wireless hotspot, which your computer can connect to as it would with a standard wireless network. Consult the Verizon documentation if you wish to turn on passwords or other security measures.
