The Nokia E71 smartphone, released in July, 2008, can experience problems sending email for an assortment of reasons, most of which can be easily fixed and some of which require a little more effort. The E71's mobile email feature requires an Internet connection, which is facilitated by its Wireless Access Protocol HTML Web browser application.
Settings
By default, the Nokia E71 automatically connects to the 2G and 3G wireless networks for its wireless networking functions, including mobile email. Occasionally, these settings can become deactivated or disconnected inadvertently while navigating the various features offered by the device. Activating and reestablishing these networking features can be done by accessing the phone's settings from the device's home screen. The E71 also supports connections to a wireless router through its Wi-Fi connectivity feature, which does not connect automatically by default. You must activate the phone's Wi-Fi feature through the device's settings interface. Failure to connect to any of these networking features can result in problems when attempting to send email from the device.
Networking Issues
Stormy weather, high volumes of traffic and power outages can cause the Nokia E71 to lose connection to its wireless networks, which can lead to email sending and receiving problems. Cell towers -- which act as relay stations for cellular transmissions, including mobile email -- will either hold on to or divert transmissions to nearby towers under these circumstances. If the tower retains an email transmission, it will appear as if the email has been sent on the E71 but will not arrive at its destination until the networking issue has been resolved. If the tower attempts to divert the transmission to a nearby tower, it will appear as if the email is failing to send on the E71. In any of these situations, all that you can do is wait for the condition to pass, at which point normal network activity should return.
Wi-Fi
If you are using the Nokia E71 to send email through its Wi-Fi functionality, several situations could be preventing you from successfully sending them. Accessing the Internet through the device's Wi-Fi feature taps into a wireless router's connection, which is facilitated through a wired connection to a phone or cable line. These types of connections are provided by Internet service providers, which allow a certain amount of bandwidth to each subscriber. Once this bandwidth has been reached, attempts to send data from additional devices, such as the E71, can fail to transmit. In these situations, disconnecting the E71's Wi-Fi feature and attempting to send the email through the 2G or 3G networks may fix the problem.
Servers
All mobile email sent and received on the Nokia E71 is done through connections to a POP, SMTP or IMAP server using third-party email client applications, such as Yahoo or Gmail. If these servers are experiencing high volumes of traffic or have crashed you will be unable to send or receive email messages until the problem has been resolved.
