Use your BlackBerry even without cell service.
While the BlackBerry brand primarily produces smartphones, that doesn't mean you necessarily have to use the devices as cellphones. In fact, as long as you purchase a BlackBerry model with WiFi access, you don't even need to attach your phone to a cell phone provider's plan. This is an option if you already have a working cell phone, but want a smartphone to gain access to the Internet, receive email, play games and interact with apps without paying for a monthly contract for cell service.
Models with WiFi
In order to use an unlocked BlackBerry for WiFi only, it's necessary to purchase a model that has WiFi access. Since you're not planning on using the BlackBerry with any specific carrier, you can choose among virtually any model with WiFi. The models include BlackBerry Bold 9000 and up, BlackBerry Curve 8320 and up, BlackBerry Pearl 8120 and up, BlackBerry Storm2, BlackBerry Style, and BlackBerry Torch models 9860 and up. This allows you to purchase a BlackBerry new or use a used version that has working WiFi capabilities.
Useable Features
While not all of your BlackBerry features will work on a disconnected BlackBerry, you are still able to access a variety of features, especially when connected via WiFi. All of the features that don't require an Internet connection, such as the phone book, calendar, notes and non-connected apps, still work without a connection. Once you're connected to a wireless network, you are also able to access email, the Internet, apps that require an Internet connection and even App World.
Limitations
While your BlackBerry can still be used as a personal device with a WiFi connection, it can only connect as a phone if you have specifically downloaded an app that allows you to make phone calls using your Internet connection, such as Skype or Google Voice. Without a cellphone plan, you won't have the ability to make calls anywhere, only when you're within range of a wireless network. Keeping a cheap, pay-as-you-go cellphone for emergencies might be an ideal option if you plan to use a BlackBerry's WiFi connection instead.
Finding WiFi Networks
If you plan on using your disconnected BlackBerry for WiFi connectivity alone, you need to become an expert in finding WiFI networks that allow you Internet access. If you have a WIFi network in your home, your BlackBerry should work fine; when you're out and about, you need to be more WiFi savvy. Fast food restaurants, cafes and even malls often offer WiFI connectivity as a service to guests, as do public buildings such as libraries.
