Smartphone (Not BlackBerry 8700)
Cingular is now AT&T Wireless. If you plan on unlocking your Blackberry 8700 for use on T-Mobile, you can choose to follow AT&T's free unlocking practices if you are still under contract and in good standing, or you can purchase an unlock code for your phone and circumvent the AT&T customer service experience. In any case, the 8700 is a quad-band GSM phone that will work on worldwide GSM carriers once unlocked.
Instructions
Free BlackBerry 8700 Unlocking from AT&T
1. Check if your current contract has been in good standing for the last 90 days. AT&T will provide free unlock codes for your phone if your contact is active and has not been overdue in the last three months.
2. Remove the battery from your BlackBerry 8700 and located the SIM card on your device. Write down the SIM card number and place the card back in the phone.
3. Call AT&T customer service and request the unlock code for your phone. Write down the code exactly as provided by the customer service representative.
4. Follow the unlock code steps you were provided. Make sure to follow each step with exact characters as provided. Your phone will reset itself when the process is complete.
5. Remove your Cingular/AT&T SIM card from the phone and replace that card with a T-Mobile SIM card. Turn the phone back on and wait 15 to 20 seconds for signal strength to appear. If you receive a signal in a T-Mobile-supported area, the unlock process was successful.
Purchasing a BlackBerry 8700 Unlock Code
6. Remove your phone's battery and locate the SIM card. Write down the SIM card number and put your battery and battery cover back into place.
7. Find a reputable unlocking service to purchase your unlock code. GSMLiberty and Unlocking.com are two examples of reputable GSM phone unlocking services.
8. Navigate to your phone's manufacturer (BlackBerry) and then the model (8700). Enter in your payment information (typically credit card or PayPal). You will need to also provide your IMEI number during checkout.
9. Wait 24 to 48 hours (typical delivery time) for an email to arrive with your unlock code.
10. Enter in the unlock code exactly as provided. Your phone will reset itself when the code has been completed. Remove the old AT&T card and insert your T-Mobile card. Wait 15 to 20 seconds for a signal to appear. If a signal appears, your unlock code worked properly.
