Tired of wires and cables of webcam? Want to video chat with your friends and family while laying in the most comfortable corner of your house and yet not have to carry your desktop or laptop computer with you? Well, finally I have the solution.
Since I started using Skype to video chat with my overseas friends I got progressively frustrated with the USB cables and wires that linked my webcam and microphone to my laptop computer. So I decided to go wireless. Unfortunately, contrary to what I had thought, there are not too many options available at this time in the market for wireless chat lovers. I ended up buying an expensive Internet camera (Home security camera) thinking that it might as well be used as a wireless webcam. But I was wrong. This guy is even worse than the regular web cam in that it not only needs to be connected to a power supply but it screws up your entire wireless network when it is connected and you end up resetting your router once every 30 minutes, and most importantly, IT CANNOT BE USED AS A WEBCAM with Skype, yahoo or msn. So, I continued my hunt on the internet.
Fortunately my meticulous research did not go wasted. I learned that you could actually use your camera cell phone as a wireless webcam. No power cords (as long as it is charged), no USB cables no wires. But you must purchase an inexpensive software to be able to connect it with your computer wirelessly. I cannot tell you how wonderful experience it is to have your laptop station on your desk while you roam around in your entire house with your cell phone focussed at you and wireless headphones sitting on top of your head. You could chat forever, or until your cell phone runs out of the charge. I can actually take my overseas friends on an elaborate tour of my house.
Instructions
1. Go to the website www.handango.com to purchase your software. You will find may types softwares. Check the brand and model of your phone and determine which software will work best with your phone. If you have a smartphone with windows mobile OS you should buy 'Mobiola Web Camera 3'. Please note that not all cell phones are compatible.
2. Download the software. It comes as a ZIP folder. Save it to your desktop and then extract it to same location. Open the extracted folder and click on SETUP file this will install the software in to your computer. You will have 3 days to try before buying. So, your purchase is safe in case it does not work.
3. Connect your cell phone to your computer through a USB cable and synchronize. The software will now be installed in your smartphone. Follow the instructions on the screen of your mobile and complete the installation. If you cannot synchronize via USB cable then go to the next step.
4. Open the extracted folder again and locate the CAB file named 'webcam_winmobile.cab'. Transfer this directly to the hard drive or external memory of your cell phone and manually install it by opening it on your cell phone. You can transfer the file through the USB route or via Bluetooth.
5. Reboot both your computer as well as your cell phone. I highly recommend it.
6. Start the application on your computer as well as on your cell phone.
7. On your cell phone click on the 'connect' tab or link and choose 'Wi-Fi' or 'Bluetooth' as the mode of your connection. If your phone is synchronized with your computer you may also choose 'Activesync' as your connection, in which case your cell phone will not be 'wireless' webcam.
8. Follow the instructions on the screen. If you are using Wi-Fi as your mode of connection make sure your Wi-Fi is enabled on the phone and you have an active Wi-Fi connectivity in your house. The software will search and display all the Wi-Fi connections available. Choose one of them and click OK. You will be connected immediately.
9. Open skype or yahoo or msn messenger. Most of them will automatically detect your webcam and connect within a few seconds, just like they would with any regular webcam.
10. Congratulations! you have gone wireless! Make sure you tell your friends about it as well.
