Make Your Own Computer Themes

Windows 7 offers users the chance to customize their desktop like never before with the use of themes. You can combine backgrounds, window colors and sounds to suit any hobby or interest. Sports fans can have their computer decked out in team colors with a slideshow of favorite players as the desktop. Frazzled workers looking for a more soothing environment can use serene photos of nature combined with gentle chimes for alerts and other sound effects. Whatever your personality, these computer themes offer a way to customize your desktop accordingly.

Instructions

1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop. This will bring up the desktop menu.

2. Select the "Personalize" option located at the bottom of the menu. This will open a new window.

3. Click the "Desktop Background" link located at the bottom left of the window. This will take you into the options for the picture or pictures that you want featured on your desktop. From here you can select a folder of pictures that can be featured in a slide show or a single photo that will be a constant background on your desktop. You can also decide how often a picture should change if using the slideshow option.

4. Select the resize option most appropriate for your images. Unless the background pictures are the same size as your desktop, you will need to resize them in one of five ways. The "Fit" option will take each photo and keep the picture proportions while resizing the photo to fit inside the monitor. "Fill" is an option that will also keep the photo's proportions, but will zoom in on the photo until it fills the screen. Often this cuts off some of the picture. "Stretch" will change the photo's proportions and make it fill up the desktop completely. "Center" will take the single photo and center it, at exact size, in the very middle of the desktop. "Tile" will shrink the photo and repeat it over and over again, filing the desktop with a series of identical images.

5. Return to the main customization menu and click the "Window Color" link. This option determines what the top of each window will look like. You can choose the color and how transparent the window borders will be.

6. Choose "Sounds" to bring up a mini window that will allow you to select the sound effects each action will make, if any. There are premade options that have a variety of different sounds, but you can also personalize the sounds to fit your theme by picking and choosing from the premade sounds or selecting your own clips.

7. Pick a screen saver for you theme by clicking the "Screen Saver" link at the bottom of the window. In the mini window that pops up, you can pick which screen saver that will best suit your theme. There are several preset options, or you can create your own photo slideshow that will play after a set amount of time.

8. Finalize your theme by saving it with a specific name. Once the theme is saved, you can select it at any time no matter what settings your desktop currently has.
