IP phones use an Internet connection to make and receive phone calls. They can be a low-cost alternative to traditional landline phone service. Any computer with a sound card can be used as an IP phone.
Function
An IP phone is an Internet protocol phone. An IP phone uses a broadband connection to the Internet, rather than to the traditional plain old telephone system (POTS) for receiving and placing calls.
Benefits
IP Phones can be a low-cost alternative to regular landline phone service, particularly if you make many long-distance calls.
Types
IP phones can be software or hardware based. Hardware-based systems use an adapter that allows regular phone instruments in your house to be used as Internet phones. An example of a hardware solution is the company Vonage. Most broadband providers (such as cable companies) also provide hardware for IP phone service. Software systems provide IP phone service through an application that allows phone calls to be made from any computer with a sound card. Skype is a popular software IP phone application.
Considerations
Many companies make instruments that look like traditional phones and connect to computers running Skype.
Warning
For technical reasons, 911 calls cannot always be made from IP phones. It is recommended you always maintain POTS or cell phone service for emergencies.
