Skype is a video calling application.
Skype is a voice over IP, or VoIP, service that facilitates audio and video calls over the Web as well as instant messaging and other related features. Calls between Skype clients are free of charge, and the software can also call landlines and mobile numbers for a fee. The Skype client application is available for Windows, Mac, Linux and other platforms as a free download from Skype.com.
Installing on a Computer
The Skype software is compatible with 32- and 64-bit versions of Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7. The Mac edition of the client requires a 1GHz or faster Intel processor and Mac OS X v10.5.8 (Leopard) or newer. Linux systems must have a 1GHz or faster processor, at least 256MB of RAM, Qt 4.4.0 or above, D-Bus 1.0.0 or above, and libasound2 1.0.18 or above installed on the computer to run Skype. On each platform, download and run the installation package from Skype.com and follow the instructions on screen.
Installing on a Mobile Device
Skype apps are available for Android and Symbian-based phones as well as the iPhone. To download the Android client, visit the Android Market page at Market.android.com. To install the Symbian version, visit Skype.com/m on your phone or download the app via SMS through the Symbian page at Skype.com. The iPhone edition of the software is available in the Apple App Store accessed via iTunes on your PC or Mac computer. Each client program is free to download and use.
Installing on Other Devices
The Skype client appears on a variety of other devices. It is integrated into phones sold by the 3 Network in the UK and is a built-in feature on several TV sets, including models manufactured by Panasonic and Samsung.
