And Remove Printers

Printing is an important part of the computing experience. People who are constantly on the move or are part of a network with multiple different types of printers may find that they need to install new printers. Windows includes a utility for adding new printers through a USB port or over a network. The ease with which printers can be added could also have the side effect of cluttering the "Devices and Printers" window with old or forgotten printers. However, you can remove printers you no longer use.

Instructions

Add Local Printer

1. Click "Start," then select "Devices and Printers."

2. Select "Add a printer" at the top of the window.

3. Click "Add a local printer."

4. Select "Use an existing port," then click "Next."

5. Select the manufacturer of your printer from the "Manufacturer" column, then choose the printer model from the "Printers" column. If your printer manufacturer or printer model is not listed, click "Windows Update" to have Windows search for it online. If this does not locate your printer, you will need to insert your printer disk into your computer's disk drive and select "Have Disk."

6. Follow the prompts from the installation wizard to complete your local printer's installation.

Add Network Printer

7. Click "Start," then choose "Devices and Printers."

8. Select "Add a printer" at the top of the window.

9. Click "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer."

10. Select the network printer you want to add, then click "Next."

11. Click "Install drive" if prompted, then follow the prompts to complete the installation. Windows often will not prompt you to install the driver.

Remove Printer

12. Click "Start," then choose "Devices and Printers."

13. Right-click on the printer you wish to remove, then select "Remove device."

14. Click "Yes" when asked "Are you sure you want to remove this device?"
