Transfer Your Landline Phone Number To The Internet

VoIP allows you to update your land line phone service to Internet phone.

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) offers an alternative to land-line phone service. VoIP uses your DSL or cable Internet connection to provide home phone service. It offers many of the same features as traditional land-line service, including caller ID, call block and call waiting. And it's cheaper than a land line. You can keep your phone number if you will be living in the same area.

Instructions

Vonage

1. Call Vonage customer service. You will be required to provide your name, Social Security number and your billing address. Your Vonage adapter will be shipped to your billing address. If you keep your current phone number it may take seven to 10 business days for the transfer to be completed.

2. Unplug the power cord from your modem.

3. Unplug the yellow Ethernet cable from the back of your modem and plug it into the yellow Ethernet port on the back of your Vonage adapter.

4. Plug the blue Ethernet cable provided with your adapter into the blue port on the back of the adapter and into the LAN Ethernet port (marked "LAN") on the back of your modem.

5. Plug the power cable into your adapter and into a power outlet. The adapter will take several seconds to power on. It will walk you through the setup wizard.

6. Plug your home phone into the phone "1" port of your adapter using a traditional phone cord. Your home phone is now ready for use. You will be required to cancel your land-line phone service if you have not participated in local number portability.

Comcast

7. Contact Comcast to transfer your land-line service to Comcast Digital Voice. You will be required to provide personal information including your Social Security number, name, address and payment information. Comcast installs digital voice service so you will be asked to schedule an appointment. If you want to keep your current home phone number, notify the customer service representative to take advantage of local number portability.

8. Wait for the Comcast installation technician. She will provide the necessary equipment to create a connection for your home phone service.

9. Place a call from your Comcast phone to ensure proper function. If you participated in number portability your previous phone service will be disconnected after your service is activated. If not, you will have to contact your previous provider to cancel your land-line service.

AT&T

10. Contact AT&T customer care and create a U-Verse customer new account. Notify the representative if you want to keep your current home phone number through number portability. AT&T offers customers with U-Verse Internet service the option to install their U-Verse phone service or to have a technician install their service for them.

11. Unplug the U-Verse residential gateway and set the plug aside. You will no longer need it. If you schedule installation, a technician will perform the steps for you.

12. Connect the battery pack in your U-Verse phone kit to an electrical outlet and the back of your U-Verse residential gateway.

13. Plug your phone into the phone plug at the back of your residential gateway.

14. Call AT&T at the number listed on your activation sheet and complete the activation prompts for your phone. After activation your phone will be ready for use.
