Software For E71

The E71 is a cellular phone produced by Nokia. It runs on the Symbian operating system and comes with basic operational applications pre-installed. There are many applications that you can download and install on the E71, including games as well as programs for social media, communication and GPS navigation. However, software development for the E71 has slowed due to Nokia's discontinuing Symbian-based phones in the United States.

Operating System

The Nokia E71 runs on Symbian version 9.2, the latest version of the operating system that was available upon the phone's release in July, 2009. In August, 2011, Nokia announced that it was switching from Symbian to the Microsoft Windows Mobile operating system. Apps made for this operating system can't run on the E71. This means that while all of the E71's Symbian-based apps still work, there are few new apps available.

Pre-Installed Software

The E71 comes with two basic types of software: management programs and applications. The management software package includes programs for maintaining contacts, customizing ringtones, keeping a calendar, taking notes and creating to-do lists. The pre-installed applications include standard offerings such as chat, instant messaging and Web browsing. Also included is Nokia's map application and a built-in dictionary.

Finding New Software

There are two primary app stores that contain programs for the E71. These are Ovi and Horizon. Ovi is Nokia's store, containing applications for all of the company's devices. These include phones that do not share the same operating system as the E71. When using Ovi for the E71, ensure that any program you wish to purchase is compatible with Symbian. Horizon is Symbian's app store, and thus contains only apps compatible with its system.

Software Installation

You can download software for the E71 by visiting one of the supporting app stores on your PC. Nokia also offers an Ovi store app that you can install directly onto your E71. This enables you to search the store and install new programs directly from your phone. According to CNET, not all applications downloaded with the app end up in the same place. Some end up in the applications folder, others appear in the main menu, while still others open automatically providing options to either save or discard.
