Use Predictive Text On Cell Phones

Predicitive texting makes typing words on a numeric key pad easier.

Predictive texting is a software function included on many cell phones that is designed to make texting on a numeric key pad easier and faster. Predictive texting is often referred to as "T9," and was invented by Martin King and Cliff Kushler. The software in predictive texting "predicts" or guesses what you are typing based on the combination of the key strokes that you enter. Once you learn to use predictive texting, you probably will find it much easier than texting in the traditional method of multi-tapping a number to indicate a specific letter.

Instructions

1. Open a blank text message on your cell phone. Select "predictive texting" or "T9" in the text message options.

2. Press the number that corresponds with the first letter of the word that you want to type. Only press the number once. For instance, if you want to type "How," you would first press the number 4 once, since this key has the letter "h" on it.

3. Continue pressing keys that correspond with the letters in your word. In this example, you would press the number 6 for "o," followed by the number 9 for "w." Don't worry if the word doesn't appear correct while you are typing it.

4. View the word that you typed once you are finished. If it is correct, press the # key to add a space after it.

5. Press the "next" key if the word isn't what you want. If the number combination that you pressed corresponds with other words, another word may come up. When you press the "next" key, you will scroll through word options. The "next" key will differ depending on your type of phone, but usually will be marked with a down arrow, the "*" symbol or a zero. Once you find the word that you want, press the space key to accept it.

6. Press the number 1 key after a word to add punctuation. The first punctuation symbol that will come up is the period. If this isn't what you need, press the "next" key until you find the punctuation that you are looking for. Press the # key to accept the mark.

7. Type numbers by holding down the number that you want until it appears.

8. Press the number 1 key multiple times to add emoticons, which are symbols (such as smiley faces) that represent various emotions. Press the "next" key to scroll through the various emoticons and the space key to accept.
