Download Virus Protection

Viruses can cause permanent damage to your computer system unless you install virus protection that blocks potential viruses and malware from infecting your PC. These antivirus applications monitor the system and take down a virus before it causes any damage. Websites such as CNET, Brothersoft and Free Downloads Center offer a collection of free and paid antivirus programs from different manufacturers. You can see the lists on their websites and find the product on the manufacturer's webpage.

Instructions

1. Go to the CNET, Brothersoft or Free Downloads Center website and open the "Security" category from the left hand side menu.

2. Browse through the list of available antivirus software programs. The list will include products such as Symantec, Kaspersky,Threatfire, Panda Cloud Antivirus, AVG Antivirus, Avast, AntiVir and many others. If you want to read user reviews of these antivirus programs, you can go to a reviews website, such as PC Mag or PC Antivirus Reviews.

3. Pick a software for download. You will see a "Download Now"/"Download" link next to the software title. Click this link to be redirected to the product's webpage on the manufacturer's website. When the website opens, click the "Download" link. Your computer will then ask you to select a folder where you would like the installer file to be saved. You can select any folder or the desktop.

If you have selected a paid antivirus software, click the "Buy" button on the product's website. Proceed to "Checkout" and enter all the required personal information, which is necessary for purchasing the product. You will need to provide your name, billing address, city, country, phone, credit or debit card number and its expiration date. Then click "Next" to review your transaction details. Once you confirm that you wish to purchase, specify whether you want the product delivered through the mail (on a CD) or you want to download the installer file. If you choose to download the product, you will have to specify a location on your PC where you want to store the installer file--for instance, your desktop.

4. Install the application you have downloaded by running the setup file and following the installation instructions on the screen. You may be prompted to restart your PC after the installation.

If you've download a free antivirus program, the installation process will be straightforward and you will not be asked for any other information, such as activation code.

If you've purchased the product, then you will have to activate it after installation before you can start using the application. Generally, the activation code is sent to the purchaser at the email address provided during the purchase. The product will activate after you enter the correct activation code.

5. Upgrade your anti-virus software for the latest virus definitions. This is, by far, the most important step you must do after installing your anti-virus program. Launch the application and click the "Update" or "Update Virus Definitions" button (the exact button varies from application to application). You must be connected to the Internet at the time of upgrade. Your anti-virus application will look for latest virus definitions, which will enable it to provide protection even against the newest virus breakouts.
