Change the Lamp in a Sony LCD TV
When the images on your screen become dark, distorted and miscolored, your Sony TV lamp likely is damaged and in need of a repair. The cause may be overuse, a short circuit or a power surge. Replacing your Sony LCD lamp is a short process that you can perform yourself, avoiding the cost of a technician.
Instructions
Removing the Old Lamp
1. Unplug your TV, then let it cool down for at least 30 minutes. Unscrew your lamp connector from the back of the TV. Remove the two screws holding the silver metal clips on the lamp connector using your Phillips screwdriver. Depending on the model of your Sony TV, the lamp connector is located on the lower right or left corner on the back of your TV.
2. Pull the metal clips gently from the lamp connector, then push the plastic thorns on the side of the lamp connector with a flat-head screwdriver to loosen the plastic cover.
3. Remove the plastic cover. Take off the double headed metal spring on the lamp enclosure, keeping in mind the angle and position for when you place it back.
4. Remove the screw on the top of the connectors with your Phillips head, then remove the plastic cover by lifting the connector and pulling it back to detach completely.
5. After unscrewing the metal clips holding it, remove the old lamp. The bulb is blown when the filament is broken.
6. Loosen and remove the screws on the connectors attached to the back of the lamp. Keep in mind the angle and positioning of the connectors when attaching the new lamp.
7. Use pliers to pull off the bolt on the connector located on the center of the old bulb and then detach it.
Replacing the New Bulb
8. Attach the connectors to the new lamp, screwing them in gently. Handle the bulb carefully to avoid piercing it as you attach the screws.
9. Place the lamp back in the lamp enclosure, then screw the clips back on. Place the lamp enclosure with the new bulb into the plastic connector, then replace the cover.
10. Screw the cover tightly onto the lamp connector. Put the double headed spring gently back into its compartment. Push it down onto its hole as you push the plastic cover over.
11. Place the metal clips back to the side of the plastic lamp connector, then screw them tightly. Screw the lamp connector back into the TV.
