VoIP calls can also be made using an iPad or iPod Touch.
Although the iPhone 4 can connect directly to cellular networks to make voice calls to other cellphones and terrestrial landlines you can also use voice over Internet protocol services to place a voice call over the Internet. Most VoIP services require you to connect to the Internet via a Wi-Fi network to use their voice calling features, which can be acquired by visiting a Wi-Fi hot spot while out and about.
Instructions
1. Ensure you are in range of a Wi-Fi hot spot and tap the "Settings" button on your iPhone's Home screen. Tap the "Wi-Fi" button and slide the "Wi-Fi" switch to "On." The iPhone begins scanning for nearby networks.
2. Tap the entry for the hot spot in the iPhone 4's "Choose a network" box. If required, enter the passcode and tap the "Join" button. If the network is unsecured, you will not be prompted for a passcode. The iPhone connects to the Internet using the Wi-Fi hot spot.
3. Tap the App Store button on your iPhone's Home screen and search for a suitable VoIP application such as Skype, Fring, Vonage or MagicJack. Tap the entry for the VoIP app in the search results followed by the "Install" button. Enter your iTunes account credentials if required and the app is downloaded to your iPhone.
4. Launch the VoIP app by tapping its icon on the Home screen. Tap the button to create a new account if you don't already have one and enter the requested details including a username and password. Follow the app's instructions to sign in once your account has been created.
5. Tap the "Contacts" button in the VoIP application. A list of your current contacts who are using the same -- or a compatible -- VoIP service is displayed.
6. Tap the contact's entry in the list to call them. Hold the iPhone 4 to your ear as if this were a normal cellphone call to speak to the recipient.
7. Tap the "End" button on the iPhone 4's screen to finish your call.
