Nokia released the GSM-compatible Nokia 5310s, also known as Nokia 5310 XpressMusic, on T-Mobile for $49 with a two-year contract. Customers unwilling to sign a contract could purchase an unlocked version of the phone for $200. Purchasing a phone under contract locks the customer and the phone to a particular carrier until the contract expires. A user must perform an unlock procedure to use the 5310s on another network. Unlock procedures require the phone's IMEI number and an unlock code, which may be obtained from the carrier or purchased online.
Instructions
1. Enter "*#06#" into the keypad to obtain the phone's IMEI number.
2. Contact the carrier to obtain an unlock code. T-Mobile customers may obtain a code with active service for at least 40 days and no overdue fees. Purchase a code from an online merchant such as Unlock Code Source (unlockcodesource.com) or GSM Liberty (gsmliberty.com) if the carrier does not provide an unlock code.
3. Turn off the phone. Slide the battery cover upward and remove. Remove the battery and slide the SIM card from the SIM card slot. Replace battery and battery cover.
4. Power on the phone and ignore any messages on the display screen.
5. Enter "#pw+CODE+1#" or "pw+CODE+7#" for phones locked to the Fido or Rogers network. Replace "CODE" with the numerical unlock code from Step 2. "SIM Restriction Off" will appear on the display if the procedure is successful.
