Create Ringtones Using A Builtin Program

Creating custom ringtones saves money and personalizes a cell phone.

Customizing the ringtone of your cell phone adds a personal touch to the device. While many cell phone service providers allow the customer to purchase a ringtone from their website, you may want a ringtone that is not offered. Creating and setting your own ringtone can be done easily using the Windows Media Player, which is built into Microsoft Windows operating systems. Note that you will need a version of Windows Media Player greater than 9.

Instructions

Ripping with Windows Media Player

1. Open Windows Media Player by clicking either the "Start" menu and pointing to Windows Media Player or clicking on the desktop icon to launch the application.

2. Click on the "Rip" option and select "More Options" from the drop-down menu.

3. Set the audio format to either WMA, WAV or MP3, according to the sound quality you want. Click OK.

4. Insert the CD storing the song you will be ripping. The CD can be any audio CD purchased from a store or a CD that you created yourself. The CD will be ripped and divided into individual files you can locate from the hard drive.

5. Locate the ripped track you want to use as the cell phone ringtone.

Editing in Windows Media Player

6. Download the Windows Media Player Trimmer Plug-in (see Resources). Enable the plug-in by selecting the "Tools" menu in Windows Media Player. Select "Solveigmm WMP Trimmer Plugin" from the list of plug-ins available.

7. Open the track that you want to use for your ringtone from the CD you ripped. Drag the cursor to the portion of the song where you want to begin the ringtone. Select "Click To Start!"

8. Drag the cursor to the point where you want the ringtone to end and select "Click to End!"

9. Select the "In" button to delete everything inside the markers. Select the "Out" button to delete everything outside the markers.

10. Save your file to an easy-to-find location on the hard drive. Connect your cell phone to your computer using a USB connection or data connection. The method for connecting your cell phone to your computer varies from one phone to another. Send the file to your cell phone as a picture message. When you receive the message, play the song and choose to set it as your ringtone.
