Georgia Dental Colleges

A Dental Admissions Test (DAT) is required of students pursuing graduate work in dentistry.

While Georgia only has one dental school, there are a modest number of undergraduate pre-dentistry tracts to help guide students as they prepare for higher study in Doctor of Medical Dentistry or Doctor of Dental Surgery degree programs. Whether you wish to study to become a dental hygienist, a dentist or an oral surgeon, the Peach State has educational institutions with programs tailored to your career goals.

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College

Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College is a part of George's state system of public colleges and universities. ABAC offers associate's and bachelor's degree programs in dozens of areas in the humanities and the sciences, including a dental-hygiene concentration housed within the college's School of Science and Mathematics. Courses such as Medical Terminology and Principles of Biology help prepare ABAC students for easy transfer to another school within the University System of Georgia for bachelor's degree study. Dental-hygiene students wishing to transfer to a college or university outside of the system can get an associate's degree with the help of an academic adviser.

The Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry is the state of Georgia's only dental school. MCG has created an 11-semester curriculum of oral biology, clinical science and behavior science and management coursework. Students can complement their work in the classroom with clinical training on campus or in community and state clinics or volunteer programs. In addition to the Doctor of Dental Medicine degree, MCG offers a dual oral biology degree. Upon graduation, students are prepared for exams to gain dental licensing and competitive careers in dentistry. The school also offers financial aid through loans, work-study and limited scholarship awards, as well as campus housing for 220 students.

Dentistry can be taken as a concentration to complement a major in a science field. LaGrange's dentistry tract has a number of requirements of its own, including mandatory coursework in physics, English, chemistry and biology. Founded in 1831, this western Georgian college is the oldest private college in the state and has an enrollment of about 1,000.
