The Google Maps mobile application is compatible with the Nokia Nuron, officially known as the Nokia 5230, and can be downloaded directly to the phone. The Nuron is built on the Symbian v9.4, Series 60 Release 5 operating system, which is the only operating system Nokia mobile devices come with that support the popular map application.
Google Maps
The Google Maps mobile application comes with all the features offered by the online version of the navigational program, including Street View, turn-by-turn directions and real-time traffic data. The mobile version also comes with the Latitude application, which acts as a social networking feature that allows the Nuron to check in and track the location of contacts and friends with the same application. Google Maps relies on the Nuron's GPS application and Web browser to generate location and navigational data.
GPS
The Nuron features an assisted-GPS application that uses a combination of cellular tower and satellite signals to provide navigational functionality. The phone also features a location-based services feature that provides contact information for nearby commercial and emergency services, such as hospitals, police stations, gas stations and restaurants. The Nuron's LBS feature can interface with Google Maps and Latitude to provide this feature. The LBS also enables third parties, such as parents and employers, to track the location of the device through a personal computer or other mobile device.
Nokia Maps
The Nokia Nuron comes with the Nokia Maps application, which offers many of the features contained on Google Maps, including those offered by Latitude. Like Google Maps, Nokia Maps taps into the Nuron's A-GPS and LBS features to provide navigational and social networking functionality. Nokia Maps also provides navigation instructions for walking, biking or public transportation and adjusts its calculation functionality to recommend the shortest and quickest route based on real-time traffic flow data.
Considerations
Google Maps is not the only Google product that is compatible with the Nokia Nuron. At the time of publication, Google produces 24 mobile apps, most of which the Nuron supports, including Gmail, Google Voice and Google Sync. Gmail is Google's email application that offers push technology, which delivers incoming email directly to the phone and doesn't require the recipient to log in and manually check for new messages. Google Voice is a voice-centered application that transcribes voice mail messages into textual content, enabling you to read your voice mail when listening to it is not practical, such as during a meeting. Google Sync synchronizes the Nuron's contact, calendar and email content with the same content on a personal computer.
