Transfer Contacts From My Treo 680 To An Iphone

There are various methods to transfer contacts from a Palm Treo phone like the 680 to an iPhone. The majority of these rely on either a commercial application utility or Microsoft Outlook, though there is a method of exporting your contacts from a Treo to an iPhone using only freely available software and services. You will need a Yahoo! email account to act as the conduit and the Palm Desktop software.

Instructions

Palm Desktop Export

1. Download and install the latest version of the Palm Desktop software to your computer. You need at least version 2.0 or greater.

2. Start the Palm Desktop application on your computer and click on the "Contacts" tab to view all your contacts stored on the Treo 680 phone.

3. Choose a single contact or multiple contacts that you want to migrate. To select multiple contacts, hold down the Ctrl key as you click with your mouse on the contacts you wish to select. On a Mac, use the command key instead.

4. Select the menu item "Export vCard" from the Palm Desktop "File" menu. Click "OK" to begin the export. You will end up exporting a file that ends with the extension .VCF, for Vcard Format.

Yahoo! Address Book Import

5. Sign up for a free Yahoo! mail account (mail.yahoo.com), if you do not have one already.

6. Sign into your Yahoo! mail account and navigate to the "Contacts" tab, which opens your Address Book.

7. Select the "Tools" menu and then choose the "Import" item from the drop-down, and then proceed to select the "Others" icon from the list presented.

8. On the Transfer Contacts screen, click the box next to "A desktop email program" and press the "Browse" button to select the file you exported from Palm Desktop onto your computer.

9. Check the agreement box and hit the "Continue" button and then proceed to press the "Import Now" button. Your contacts will now be available in Yahoo! mail.

iPhone Import

10. Start iTunes on your computer and connect your iPhone using the USB cable that came with it.

11. Select your iPhone from the list of devices in the leftmost column of iTunes and then click on the Info tab at the top of the iTunes main display window.

12. Check the box next to "Sync Address Book Contacts" and then check the box next to "Sync Yahoo! Address Book Contacts" below and configure with your login and password and choose any groups you may have set up. Earlier versions of iTunes may display a slightly different set of choices, and you may have the option to select "Sync" contacts, which pops up a menu where you can choose Yahoo! Address Book.
