Dish Network Closed Captioning Won'T Turn Off

Dish Network offers a variety of satellite programming features that require special equipment, including a satellite receiver, satellite dish and remote control. In addition to its programming packages and on-demand video services, the provider also gives you control over how you watch programming, such as parental controls and closed-captioned viewing. Several situations can cause the closed-captioning feature to not turn off, each of which is easily remedied.

Remote Control Batteries

Dish Network offers a variety of satellite receiver boxes, including models that feature digital video recorders and high-definition viewing capabilities. Each receiver comes with an accompanying remote control that allows you to control the box's many functions, such as closed-captioned viewing. If your remote control's batteries are running low, you may have trouble controlling any of the receiver's functions, including turning off or on closed-captioning. Replace the device's batteries to enable you to turn off this feature.

Multiple Devices

Because your Dish Network remote control can be programmed to control peripheral devices, such as a Blu-ray player, DVD player or TV, your receiver's closed-captioning feature may not turn off because it is set to control the wrong device. Most Dish Network remote controls feature special buttons, indicating which peripheral device it is set to control. Press the appropriate button for controlling the receiver to resolve your closed-captioning problem.

Wrong Device

On some occasions, you may have activated a peripheral device's closed-captioning feature, while mistakenly thinking you activated the receiver's. When attempting to deactivate the feature while the remote is set to control the other device, it will appear as if you cannot deactivate the receiver's closed-captioning feature. Check the remote control's settings prior to using it to control other devices to avoid these situations.

Glitches

If you are still unable to turn off the Dish Network closed-captioning feature, reset the device by pressing the red "Reset" button on the front of the receiver box. This feature is in place to assist you in an assortment of troubleshooting efforts, including this one.
