There are two types of ringtones--ones that are free and ones that are not. If you want to pay for your ringtones, you can download directly from Nextel. Before you download free ringtones, you need to know that older Nextel cellphones will not allow you to download ringtones. Newer cell phones use a built-in melody composer and will accept midi or MMF formats. If you are going to transfer directly from your computer, you will need the USB data cable for Nextel phones or a phone and computer that are Bluetooth capable.
Before Downloading
Check to see if your cell phone has a melody composer by locating on the phone menu itself or by the specs in the user manual. If you find this information, along with it will be step-by-step instructions for completing a download. If you cannot find it, Nextel's website will give you information about your phone type and downloadable ringtones. After you know the type of formats the cell phone accepts, you are ready to begin.
File Transfer
There are many free websites you can search to buy rigntones or find them for free. One site to try is www.cellware.com. Some sites are not free, as stated, and require a membership. After you find your desired site, all you need to do is look at the file type and compare it to the information you located earlier in the manual or on Nextel's website. Connect the data cable from the phone to the computer or enable Bluetooth on both devices and sync. Begin transferring the files you want and test one to see if your phone is compatible with your download. If the cell phone recognizes the format, your ringtones will play back properly.
SMS Messaging
Another method of downloading rintones is to use the Short Message Service (SMS). This is done by receiving a mobile-to-mobile message. With some of the older phones, this will be the only way for you to download ringtones. One site you can use to download ringtones is www.freeringtones.mbuzzy.com. You will need to join by creating your mbuzzy profile. The site is user friendly and you will immediately see the "Join" button. Also on the top navigation bar you will see "Mobile" where you will need to scroll over with the mouse to reveal "Free ringtones and wallpaper."
