Nokia, one of the better-known names in the mobile phone industry, has produced an extensive line of smartphones, including the E71, released in 2008, and 6790 Surge, released in 2009. At first glance, it seems apparent that these phones are different. After a closer look, however, it becomes obvious that they are more similar than dissimilar. Though their differences are few, they may be enough to help you better decide which phone is right for you.
Physical Features
The Nokia E71 measures 4.5 inches long, 2.2 inches wide and 0.4 inches deep and weighs 4.5 oz., while the Nokia 6790 Surge measures 3.8 inches long, 2.3 inches wide and 0.6 inches deep and weighs 4.4 oz. Both phones feature a 2.4-inch thin-film transistor touch screen that displays more than 16 million colors at 320 by 240 pixels of resolution. The E71's full QWERTY keyboard is situated directly below the phone's display screen, while the 6790 Surge's is housed on the phone's slide-out component.
Battery Life
The Nokia E71 is powered by a standard lithium-polymer battery that provides up to 480 hours, or 20 days, of standby time and up to 10.5 hours of talk time. The Nokia 6790 Surge is powered by a standard lithium-ion battery and gets up to 400 hours, or 16.7 days, of standby time and up to five hours of talk time. Compared to similar models on the market at the time of publication, the E71's times rank above the seven-hour average for talk time and the 448-hour average for standby time, while the 6790 Surge's rank below these averages.
Cameras and Connectivity
The Nokia E71 is equipped with a 3.2-megapixel camera, which captures images at up to 2,048 by 1,536 pixels of resolution and is capable of recording video. The Nokia 6790 Surge features a 2-megapixel camera that takes pictures at up to 1,600 by 1,200 pixels of resolution and is also able to record video. The E71 also features a secondary rear-facing camera, which gives the phone videoconferencing functionality. While both phones connect to the 2G and 3G wireless networks, only the E71 is Wi-Fi compatible.
Memory
Both the Nokia E71 and the Nokia 6790 Surge come with 128 MB of data storage space and are equipped with a micro-Secure Digital card slot for up to 8 GB of expanded memory. The phones are compatible with microSD cards, which provide up to 2 GB of memory, and high-capacity microSD (microSDHC) cards, which offer between 2 GB and 32 GB of memory, up to their 8 GB limits. With expanded memory, both phones support a large number of contacts with multiple phone numbers and photo and ringtone ID. The exact amount of contacts depends on the amount of memory installed.
