Released in 2006, mostly to European markets, Sony Ericsson's W950i is a touch-screen cell phone with advanced Walkman music-playing features and stylus-centered handwriting recognition. If you want to move your W950i to a new network, either for a better rate or to avoid roaming charges on the road, you should see if your old carrier will give you an unlock code for free; otherwise, you'll have to pay for one at an online vendor. It's legal.
Instructions
1. Find your W950i's IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) number on a label under the battery. Some networks also allow you to view your IMEI by typing *#06# into your keypad and pressing "Send." Write the number down.
2. Call the carrier you wish to leave, give a representative your IMEI number and ask for your free unlock code. You will be told that your code will be sent to your email address in about five days--as long as you pay any early termination fees--or your request will be declined. If the latter, navigate to one of many online unlock code websites to buy your code for upwards of $9.99 (as of December 2010). Wait for your code to arrive via email.
3. Turn off your phone, remove the back cover and battery and remove your old network's SIM card.
4. Replace the battery and power the phone on again. Enter the code as instructed by your old carrier or the online vendor. This usually will require you to enter the digits and hit "Send." You should be informed on the display if the unlock code worked.
5. Turn off your phone, remove the battery and slide in your new service provider's SIM card. Replace the battery and back cover, then power on your W950i.
