As of mid-August 2011, the Nokia N9 smartphone has yet to be released, but its features, dimensions and other details have been publicized. Based on the Linux MeeGo operating system, the N9 will come in 16GB and 64GB models and will offer an assortment of features, including Wi-Fi connectivity, a built-in digital camera and GPS application. According to CNET News, the phone is expected to hit the market later in 2011.
Internal Features and Connectivity
The Nokia N9 is built on the Linux MeeGo OS, v1.2 Harmattan operating system and uses a 1GHz Cortex A8 processor and a PowerVR SGX530 graphics processing unit. The N9's GPU serves as a secondary processor dedicated to performing the complex calculations needed to run 3-D applications, such as video games. Unlike other smartphones, the N9 does not come with a card slot for expanded memory, but does offer a microUSB 2.0 port and cable for connecting to a personal computer to synchronize data and transfer files. This quad-band phone connects to the 2G and 3G wireless networks using GSM and HSDPA technologies, and is compatible with Wi-Fi networking.
Physical Features
The Nokia N9 is 4.6 inches long, 2.4 inches wide and 0.5 inch deep. It weighs 4.8 oz., making it convenient to take anywhere. The N9 comes with a 3.9-inch AMOLED capacitive touch screen that displays more than 16 million colors at 480 by 854 pixels of resolution. The phone's capacitive touch screen responds to the electromagnetism let off by human flesh and will not react to other stimuli, including styluses and eraser tips. The N9 does not feature flip or slide-out components.
Camera and GPS
The Nokia N9 features an 8-megapixel camera that records high-definition video and takes still pictures at up to 3,264 by 2,448 pixels of resolution. Several camera features, such as face detection and geotagging, give the phone even more photographic functionality. Geotagging embeds GPS coordinate data into each picture taken by the phone. The phone also features an assisted-GPS application that uses cellular tower and satellite signals to produce turn-by-turn navigational instructions and is able to work in places where standalone GPS units do not perform well, such as indoors and in dense urban areas.
Miscellaneous Features
You can use the Nokia N9 to send text, picture, voice and video messages and for mobile email support. The device comes with an assortment of pre-installed video game applications, including Angry Birds Magic, Galaxy on Fire 2 and Real Golf 2011. A standard lithium-ion battery provides the N9 with up to 11 hours of talk time and up to 450 hours of standby time. The N9's media player supports a variety of audio and video file formats, including eAAC+, MP3, MP4 and H.264. When it is released, the Nokia N9 will be available in cyan, magenta and black.
