Most cell phones as of 2010 are TTY-compatible.
In 2002 the Federal Communications Commission mandated that wireless providers supply teletype compatible handsets for use by the hearing-impaired. TTY converts messages to transmitted signals which are converted back to text and displayed on the recipient's mobile screen. Additional accessories are required to connect the TTY device to the handset.
Nokia 2330

Bold 9700
The Bold 9700 BlackBerry is manufactured by Research In Motion. The handset is 4.3 inches long, 2.3 inches wide and 0.5 inches thick. It weighs 4.3 ounces. The BlackBerry Bold features 3G technology with built-in Wi-Fi. The 3.2-megapixel camera takes still shots and video. The 9700 has up to six hours of talk time and offers expandable memory. The Bold 9700 requires a RIM 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm adaptor for TTY compatibility. Suggested retail price as of December 2010 for the 9700 BlackBerry is between $300 and $500; suggested retail price for the RIM 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm adaptor is $6.
