Adobe Systems, the same company that makes the full version of Flash, developed Flash Lite. Once cell phones acquired the ability to fully access the Internet, Flash Lite filled the void that prevented these devices from viewing Flash content. The hardware requirements to run Flash Lite is much lower, and for this reason, not all of the features available on the full version of Flash are accessible with the lite version.

Flash Lite allows users to check device parameters such as battery life and network information. Additionally, Flash Lite allows users to play Flash games or access Flash content while using your phone to send text messages or make voice calls. The Flash Lite player also automatically scales applications to fit the display of the mobile device. Since the size of mobile displays vary by manufacturer and model, this scaling allows Flash content to play and look the same on all mobile devices.

Adobe originally developed Flash for two dimensional vector animations. The increased use of the Internet required, the development of a playback system that could minimize file sizes for faster downloading. Multimedia applications with video, voice and animation take up a lot of bandwidth, and Flash made this downloading process more efficient. The full version called Flash uses a native scripting language called action script. In order to use applications authored by Flash, you have to install the plugin or player for your web browser.

The Flash and Flash Lite technologies have been adopted by almost all computer, cell phone and other small device manufacturers. The one standout that has not adopted Flash is Apple, the maker of the iPhone, iPod and iPad.
