Install A Sis 305 Display Adapter On Xp

The card fits into available PCI (white) or AGP (gray) slots.

Compatible out of the box with Windows XP, the SiS 305 display adapter is a discontinued graphics processing unit (GPU) that features a single VGA port. The SiS 305 offers 16 or 32 MB of memory and operates at a maximum resolution of 1920-by-1440 pixels at a 70 Hz refresh rate. Various hardware vendors produced video cards based on the GPU, including Pine Technology and ASUS. If you currently have a graphics card installed, you must remove it when installing the SiS 305.

Instructions

Install the Hardware

1. Shut down your computer. Unplug all cables and peripheral devices.

2. Remove the left side panel (while facing the front of the case) by unscrewing screws or manipulating latches.

3. Clip your antistatic wrist bracelet to a metal object, and fasten the strap around your wrist.

4. Locate an empty PCI slot or the empty AGP slot on your computer's motherboard or your current graphics card if applicable. The PCI slots are shorter than ISA slots. PCI and AGP slots are the same length, but your motherboard will have only one AGP slot, which will be positioned differently than PCI slots. Newer motherboards will feature PCI-E slots, which are longer and shorter than standard PCI slots, according to the specification. See Resources if you are unsure of the appearances of different slots.

5. Remove the slot cover screw and slot cover that corresponds with the PCI slot or AGP slot you intend to use. Remove the existing graphics card if applicable.

6. Point the SiS 305 card so that the VGA port faces toward the case exterior. Line up the SiS 305 card's gold pins with the slot. Push the card into the slot until you hear a click. Remove the card, match the pins with the slot and try again if you experience problems inserting it into the slot.

7. Secure the card by screwing in the slot cover screw.

8. Replace the side panel, and secure it with screws or latches. Remove the antistatic wrist bracelet. Reconnect all cables and peripheral devices.

Install the Drivers

9. Boot up your computer.

10. Allow Windows XP a few moments to detect your new hardware.

11. Download the latest drivers for the SiS 305 (see Resources). Save the file to your desktop or "Downloads" folder.

12. Double-click the drivers file. Follow the on-screen prompts to install the drivers.
